DREAM: I’m escorted into a big room—a few chairs set up in the center. I have a good feeling inside me, a spiritual warmness that’s familiar. A man, the music leader of a church, sits down and asks a question to me and the others before we start, “Is everyone okay if we pray and enter into?????”

We begin to sing hymns. I immediately find my place in harmony. The guy next to me drones on a bass tone of A and encourages me to do the same.

Margot: “I still love you. This blows. I miss being in your life. Even when we were hanging out again I realized you were doing so many things without me and I felt like I didn’t fit in your life anymore. And it sucks so much cause it’s true. I don’t fit. And I really just want to make Christmas cookies with you :(”

Me: “i feel that too. but we can still make christmas cookies ;)”

Spicy Chicken Sandwich with Waffle Fries and a Sweet Tea from Chic-fil-A.

Marbled Mocha Bread.

Soaking in the new tunes while I make deliveries.

My friend Jes from Durham is in town for the weekend. She drops by and joins me on a few deliveries.

Me: “Chinese food is a natural de-odorizer in my car.”

Jes: “Actually I think you mean odorizer.”

Me: “You’re right [Haha]”

Back home. With Darren and Devon in his room. Entertaining ourselves—browsing through lists online of ridiculous inventive products like glow in the dark toilet paper and water jet packs.

Tofu and Mixed Vegetables with Rice in Garlic Sauce.

Downstairs, at the card table sharing a few glasses of Red Wine and German Spice Cookies with Jes. Anthony, Kelley, James Graves, and Kevin walk in just in time to join in conversation—the concept of getting progress reports long past our school years. Kelley has a lisp caused from a tongue bite...

“Kelley you should always talk like that. It’s really cute.”

Margot’s at some grad party right now but wants to come over afterwards. She states in a text, “I wanna do things to you.”

Me: “okay ill get clean first.”

...

Showering and decompressing before her arrival...

She’s here in my room but tainted from a squabble at the party...upset about some dude disrespecting her by lifting up her dress then walking away. She’s heated and yelling about it. I try to calm her and put her in the bed. We share sweet lusty kisses and the momentum builds. Her dress. Unbuttoning one at a time straight down the middle. Touching her. So desirable. There’s an obvious mutual understanding that we’re going to have sex.

I pause, “Okay I’m gonna put something on.”

But wait...it’s over. She’s done with this now. She’s thoroughly offended once again...and lost her excitement. And so have I...my juice is gone.

Me: “Really? I told you I would have to wear a condom.”

Her face is stern. I give up. It doesn’t turn me on when she’s turned off. She clothes herself and gathers her stuff to leave. And so begins a dramatic debate on how insulting this is to her.

Me: “Insulting? Are you fucking kidding me? Margot, you had sex with someone else unprotected. I have no choice. I’m not going to risk that. If anyone should be insulted it’s me! I’m sorry. If we’re going to have sex I’m going to wear a condom. It’s that simple.”

She’s so stubborn and self-focused. Full of twisted logic and redundant arguments. Trying to reason with her is like talking to a brick wall and convincing it it’s made of Jell-O.

...

Now she’s missing her key ring piece and struggling to find it in her purse. In frustration she dumps the contents all over the place and slams her watch down. The attention is diverted to this minor situation. I pitifully watch her crawl in search of the lost item. Upon discovery of her watch breaking in two, her expressive outburst would make you think it’s the end of the world. Hateful. Bitter. God, that vanity. How does a person become so materialistic? Something is terribly wrong with her temper. I attempt to help and make promises that this could be fixed. She’s doubtful. Escorting her to the bed where she curls up and cries for a bit. Offering tissues and comfort. She’s such a queen.

I caress her tense head, “You’re too beautiful to be this stressed.”

...

She warms up after a while. I guess it’s possible she actually realized that none of this mattered because we pick up right where we left off...

+ + + + + + + + + +

Our blockade of inhibitions has crumbled. The condom isn’t a nuisance anymore. As soon as my latex monster penetrates her hot and wet ravine, a switch goes off and she immediately enters into a cloud nine sexual frenzy. Emphatic. Pumping. Pounding. Pushing. That incredible fiery sensation comes back to me. Oh how I missed this...the sex... invigorating...making up for lost opportunities. She talks dirty and I like it. But this was only a recent development in the months leading up to our break-up and even after. Here we are, diving into pleasure together. One-on-one. We finish and lie down naked fully satisfied.

DREAM: Out on the Friend’s School basketball courts shooting around. It’s early in the morning, like 5am early. Some of the employees arrive on site. They’re nurse ladies—moving their carts right in the middle of the court—talking to me. I maneuver around the cart to do a layup.

Waking up just before 2 p.m.

Margot: “Hey I’m sorry about last night. I was a little harsh. I said some pretty mean things on the phone and on voicemail. Sorry. I was just really worked up. I felt like you didn’t care that I left or about my safety. Now I’m emotionally hungover and my sadness from last night has transcended into today, ruining it :(. I miss you and love you so much.”

Me: “you were more than a little harsh. its unacceptable. we’re not dating and you still find ways to abuse me. i appreciate your apology though.”

Her: “Yeah right...well I can only guess your correspondence with me is over or been severely decreased. So you have a good one. I guess I’ll hear from you sometime.”

...

Her: “...or it’s just been ended completely.”

...

Me: “look, im sorry i didn’t walk back with you. you made a minute problem HUGE. i just wish you had better control over yourself then we could’ve had a pleasant night.”

...

Me: “You crossed the fucking line with your voicemails. you really know how to insult people and make them feel worthless. you’re a mean person.”

Her: “Well you made me feel worthless without even trying for years.”

...

Her: “So what? We’re not talking or hanging out anymore at all?”

Me: “you have an anger issue. you will keep hurting and abusing the ones you love unless you take control of it.”

Her: “Thanks for the ambiguous answer. Seriously dude. Be straight forward please.”

Me: “im explaining something to you and being straight forward. take back what you said and ill consider keeping you in my life.”

Her: “What did I say that needs to be taken back?”

Me: “your carelessness with your words is so beyond your understanding you can’t even remember what you said?”

Her: “No. I know what I said. I just wanna know what specific phrases you had in mind.”

Me: “how about all of them”

...

Her: “Well I thought that’s what my apology was for but ok. I take all the things I said back.”

She's a never ending thorn in my side...a lovely prick on my skin that I wish would go away but at the same time leaves such a colossal bittersweet mark on my heart. Her gritty episodes never cease to perplex me. She's two persons in one...a real phenomenon. I know this for sure though...I do not want to be with her.

Grilled Cheese with Tomato. Salt n Vinegar Chips. Honey Green Tea.

Finishing Lonely Hearts (2006).

I get called into China Wok for a few hours...making decent money.

Then to Norfolk with Stephanie, Darren, Josiah, and Kevin for the Shdwply Records showcase. On the way there—downing a few Mickey’s and sharing tunes.

At The Belmont: You’re Jovian (Elliott’s band) with their jittery noisy melodic rock, Adam from Invisible Hand with dancy loops and charismatic leads on the microphone, PC Worship with sludgy grunge and punk, Super Vacations, and some fast paced garage band. It feels like a friend reunion being here. The bar/venue is packed with familiar faces and live sounds. Dance pit. Bobbing heads. Push around. Shake your limbs.

Darren: “If I was 2 feet taller I would be the greatest human being that mankind has ever seen.”

Sesame Tuna Steak.

As we’re saying our goodbyes, Nick Jackson jokingly makes me feel dumb for leaving, “What? You’re leaving? It’s a Friday night! You’re a square.”

“No. I’m a rectangle. I have length and width...Actually I’m more like a trapezoid.”

On the drive back with Darren and Kevin. Listening to Darren go on a bitching rant about people and things but mostly the shift in our house arrangement. At some point he recognizes how ridiculous he’s acting, “I need to stop bitching.”

Back home.

Leftover Spaghetti and a Carrot.

DREAM: Walking across a long narrow enclosed walkway bridge with a group of people. Certain police-type folk walk beside us. One of them reprimands me for wearing my baseball cap backwards and suggests I resituate it in the proper frontward position. Nervously I flip it around. In my mind I mull over why this officer had any say on how I should wear my hat. I question whether America is really free or not. We arrive at the end of the bridge where rich older folk lounge in a pristine pool. Some of the guys from my group jump right in without any introduction. I crouch into a corner where the cement meets the dirt and rock. It’s a picturesque moment. I grab my small digital camera and set up for a long exposure shot but the camera is frozen in processing mode and I can’t get it to take the picture. ☼☼☼ With Amanda, a friend of hers, and Raven. We’re all hanging out—walking in and out of places around town. I make sure not to say a word to Raven, as there is an unspoken awkwardness between her and I considering we haven’t communicated in 4 or 5 months. At some point she makes a gesture of acknowledgment to me. Softly and sweetly we reconnect on a bench but sharing little words, only mood and expression.

Waking up a little before 1 p.m.

Practicing piano.

Fruit and Nut Bar.

Driving to Hampton in a hellish lockdown on I264. I attempt to take VB Blvd instead but the stoplights and Christmas traffic make it a nuisance still.

As I’m forced to sit in stop-and-go traffic I yell to myself in the car, “Nobody’s going anywhere in their lives!”

Practicing with Tim at his studio—working through Musicplayer songs.

Back home.

Eating a makeshift meal: Fettuccine Noodle Stir-Fry with Broccoli, Onions, Garlic, and Eggs.

With Stephanie, Darren, and Anthony meeting up with friends at Chicho’s. Elliott, Richie, and Kevin are already there. Sharing beers. Margot shows up. There’s some kind of beer pong competition going on.

Then to Harpoon Larry’s for a bit. Drinking a Fat Tire Ale. Some dude walks in that Stephanie recognizes as her sister’s crazy ex-boyfriend. There’s actually a restraining order against him and he’s not supposed to be anywhere near the family. She freaks out a little. But we leave soon after so everything’s okay.

Back to the house.

[iii]

We gather on the Friend’s School basketball courts—shooting around—being wild and free. Richie has a destructive nature that is unbecoming. Watching him turn over picnic tables and tip over the flowerpots, and honking the horn and flashing the headlights from the shuttle bus.

Me: “Show some respect for The Friend’s School, man!”

After a while, Margot announces that she has to pee and is going back to the house. I didn’t pay too much mind to it. I should’ve...because later, on our way back I find her standing on the sidewalk with enraged eyes and a tense face. The others immediately recognize what’s about to happen and venture on. And I’m stuck to deal. Her dark nature has taken over. She starts yelling and ridiculing me for not walking back with her earlier as I was supposed to just be chivalrous and assume she wanted me to. I honestly didn’t think much of it at the time. Why didn’t she just ask me? The rest of the night is dramatic and unnecessary. Screaming outside the house—keying the side of my car—insults-galore—angry voicemails. This is all just ammo and fuel she uses to attack me with...overcompensating for her dissatisfaction and insecurity. Bi-polar. Twisted. Crazy. I don’t want to play this stupid immature game with her. This is a shame. How did I get under her skin so easily?

...

Her: “It’s like a dog. They need to be trained.”

Me: “You’re saying I’m a dog?”

Her: “Yeah, you need to be trained.”

I laugh on the inside at this ridiculous statement.

...

I’m just so disappointed because things have been very calm between her and I in the past two weeks whenever we spent time together. Eventually, you just have to realize that some people don’t change. They just don’t. And I am probably always going to make her crazy and have this torturous affect her.

...

Eventually I turn on my phone again and answer one of her thousand attempts to call me...

At first I try to be peaceful and unaffected...but the conversation is circular and redundant. I have to speak up...

Me: “Who are you? You’re some prissy high-class queen. You think you’re better than everyone else! You only think of yourself! Remember when you told me you think you can be a bitch sometimes? Well, this is one of those times.”

...

Eventually things cool off...

Her; “I was going to have sex with you tonight, like conscious sex...as a Christmas present.”

Me: “It’s not even Christmas yet.”

...

Me: “You know I love you. I always will. Keep that in the back of your mind.”

She has taken her toll on me tonight.

Exhausted.

Waking up around noon. My roommate, Elisa, needs a ride to the mall for work. I brace the hellish traffic for 30 minutes then return to the sleepy hot body in my bed. Affectionate gestures exchanged and cute phrases spoken.

She leaves...

Downstairs, Darren and Josiah are making eggs and sandwiches. I join them at the table for small talk and breakfast.

Eating a Fruit and Nut Bar, a Banana, and an Egg with Orange Juice.

Josiah: “Sex is so personal in this state [Virginia]! It’s frustrating.” He’s always romanticizing the sexual philosophy and behavior in New York compared to here in our small town.

Darren: “There’s one thing I learned about hopes and dreams...you should just give them up...right now.”

Quick trip to Target with Margot. Browsing for Christmas presents with her, mostly being Hello Kitty themed, and picking up bulk toilet paper.

I find myself overwhelmingly sexually charged today and yesterday. One thing I’ve realized is that whenever Margot does sleep over I can’t masturbate and she doesn’t really offer any sexual satisfaction because we haven’t been sexually active and I guess her and I both are reluctant too.

Back home.

Grilled Cheese with Tomato. Potato Chip Trio. Honey Green Tea.

Organizing files.

Darren cooks up a storm in the kitchen. Potential new roommate, Amanda McClaskey, shows up with her family to check out the place...good vibes.

Stephanie and Darren occupy my room for a while...

Discussing the sexual energy we gauge in others around us.

Darren: “I like skinny girls who are naked.”

...

The depressing realization that “we hang out with people who aren’t doing anything [with their lives].”

...

Stef: “I love Darren. He’s so reaaaaaal.”

...

Entertaining ideas.

Darren: “I feel like if I had the money to get out of America I would leave. I would get the fuck out.”

...

Darren: “Consumerism is about money and status.”

Sharing Marbled Mocha Bread.

Salmon with Couscous and Squash & Zucchini.

We trek to James Graves’s new place, which happens to be way out in the southwestern part of Virginia Beach. Art and Darren in my car. Josiah and Stephanie in another car. Art’s in the passenger seat discussing the workaholic nature of the Chinese. I’m joking around about the affections for Cecily in my dreams. We arrive at the three-story townhouse. Dezi, a church friend of mine from back in the day, lives here too. It’s probably been at least 10 years since we’ve seen one another. Upon sight she immediately jumps out of her bed and attacks me in the hallway, “ROOOBERT!!!” It’s amazing to reconnect with someone from your teenage years and see how much they’ve changed or not changed, but definitely grown and matured. Stef orders pizza. Sharing Mike’s Hard Blueberry Lemonades. Chillin’ in James’s loft room on the third floor. Amanda and him are touching up a flyer for a show that James designed. Art picks up a sword and poses.

Leaving. On the way back—just Art and I—we share a Black & Mild with the windows shut—shootin’ the shit about this and that.

Back at the house I challenge Art to a few games of NBA Jam, just like old times. Hooking up the Sega and going at it. I win 2. He wins 1.

In the old bedroom at my parent’s place. We have guests and people walking in and out. An attractive Black/Caucasian girl enters the room—shuts and locks the door. She’s taller than me but very pretty. She takes her clothes off but leaving her underwear on.

Her: “I want to have sex with you...”

I laugh and reply, “You want to have sex with me??”

She’s insistent on doing it up on the top bunk. But our time is cut short...
 ▬ ○ ☼

I wake up from the dream. I feel Margot still next to me. Feeling somewhat guilty about the dream’s sexual activities that didn’t really happen. She has to be up early for a work thing. I fall back to sleep...

☼ ○ ▬
I’m working at China Wok. Cecily, my boss, for some reason joins me in the car on the 3 deliveries I have to make. As I’m driving around I have a sense of confidence and I’m cracking jokes that keep the spirits high. Our shoulders touch from the gravity of the turns and shifts. At one point I notice our arms interlock—it feels warm and new. On the corner of Birdneck and VB Blvd, we pull into a trailer lot to park the car. It’s understood I have to make the deliveries on foot. I grab the bicycle. She grabs the food. We walk side by side. There’s affection between each other and she seems to be open to it—allowing me to take the reigns.
▬ ○ ☼

Margot returns from her early work meeting to nap with me for a few more hours...

☼ ○ ▬
With Margot in my bed. We’re preparing to have sex with each other. She’s on top of me naked. On the ground I have an array of contraceptives, lubes, and other things of that nature. I rip open a condom. But our time is cut short...

Check-up call on my dad—making plans to see him for Christmas...

Dad: “So how’s it going?”

Me: “Life is just moving right along.”

Dad: “Living in the fast lane I guess.”

It’s a brisk cool night. We suit up and head out for basketball on the Friend’s School courts. 3 on 2 action. Anthony and Darren battle against Elliott, Josiah, and myself. A colossal competition but in the end my team wins 6-5.

Margot stops by after closing at the bar.

Tea and talks at the card table while Anthony personalizes a school poster on the wall.

Back in my room her and I settle in the bed...

“B-b-b-b-ird!”

This is becoming quite the norm for her to spend the night. She says she prefers sleeping next to someone (next to me). Things are still calm and also un-sexual.

DREAM: Camera pans from left to right and follows an aerial view of a metropolitan European city. There’s a ferocious grizzly bear on the loose—something’s wrong with the bear—he’s been pumped up with adrenaline and is ten times stronger than a normal bear. Fear spreads across the city. Camera zooms down into a mall square. I’m cooped up in a storefront on the third floor with a crowd of people. We watch as the crazy grizzly bear chases after a man in the courtyard. It’s terrifying. I make efforts to barge the door with a heavy dresser and we prepare ourselves for the bear’s arrival because it’s understood he’s going to show up. All of a sudden he slams into the door. I command the crowd of people to lie low and pretend to sleep. There I am behind a counter in a closet with windows lying across the floor, arm spread out, hand placed right in front of the door. The bear wants in. He’s sniffing and snorting. Maybe it was the sight of everyone sleeping but the bear just falls to the floor and starts snoozing. The plan worked! But not for long. While everyone attempts to leave quietly the bear awakens ready to wreak havoc again. We all run outside and disperse in the courtyard. The bear rises on its back legs and pins me to the wall. There’s an understood kinship with the bear that I suddenly realize so I’m not afraid anymore. I lean my head into the bear’s furry stomach, which is partly bumpy. The bear accepts the affectionate gesture then falls to the floor. I notice the bear is Margot somehow—apparently she only transforms into a bear on certain days. With heavy teary eyes, I start reprimanding her for the people she’s killed...

“What about those innocent people? That woman. Those two little girls. They’re dead!”

Getting out of bed at 11:15 a.m.

Banana. Orange Juice.

All day shift at China Wok.

Stephanie: “Vb was fun for a little while before I re-realized its still just a tiny pool of mostly the same people.”

Me: “why does the tiny pool unimpress you? you’re the kind that likes social variety i guess. theres a lot of good things to be said about such a community.”

Stephanie: “I like the community. I just don’t think it’s a high traffic community…”

Me: “yeah we’re definitely not a cultural train station”

Stephanie: “I tried the polyamory thing and I came to the conclusion that humans like to be loved one on one, one at a time.”

Me: “at the end of the day when all the boys leave you in a polyamorous dust, ill still be your friend.”

Slow afternoon.

I had an option to hang out with Margot tonight that I turned down. She thought it would be nice to see me so I thought I’d invite her over for a sleep over. We lay down on the bed together cuddling and such. She looks at me with an inspective face...

Her: “I never realized how dorky you are...and quirky.”

Me: “You knew that!”

Her: “Yeah but it gets kind of lost when you’re always trying to have sex with someone.”

Me: “Or love someone...”

Her: “That too.”

Why do you make me so nervous?

Peanut Butter Bagel. Mango Green Tea.

While I’m driving around making deliveries my imagination takes its toll on my state of mind—composing stupid scenarios where I might make a fool of myself in a raging fit or take a stand on what’s mine—I even ponder investing in a fake gun that looks real to use in these situations. But it’s all good fun in this head of mine. However, this mental hecticness is at times overwhelming.

Salt n Vinegar Chips. Strawberry Yogurt.

Towards the end of the shift, an hour before I’m done, Margot shows up and we chat at the table. She’s texting on her phone off and on. I know she’s got a web of attention-giving-objectifying male friends on that thing, forever hollering at her. I know deep inside she enjoys the fact that men want her and idolize her. She has power over them...and sometimes I think she still has some power over me. For some reason, I’m on edge and unnerved. She makes me feel this way and I don’t know why. I guess it could all be from what happened last night and the dreadfully slow day at work, which allows my brain to wander and dwell on whatever’s close at hand.

Me: “I’m just uncomfortable and you make me nervous.”

Her: “What about me makes you nervous?”

Me: “Everything.”

Her: “Well, what?”

Me: “It’s pointless to psychoanalyze your behavior because it won’t make a difference. Nothing will change. YOU don’t change...I guess that’s kind of comforting though, to know someone will never change.”

...

Her: “You’re so heavy.”

Me: “I know. I can be heavy. I can be light, too.”

I try to look past those pretty beady eyes of hers cause that’s where the truth lies. I know behind it is a sweet-with-good-intention-yet-manipulative-girl seeking basic satisfaction and validity for her insufficient heart.

Back home.

Stretching and jumping around in the living room. Richie, Anthony, and Kevin take part in the heated football game on television. I feel much lighter than before now that I’m around good vibes—with friends and housemates. Just moving the limbs on my body helps too.

DREAM: My mission is to find this society of people that claim to be Iraqis—they live underground, literally, in these tunnel facilities. I’m supposed to join them and find my comrades. I hop down this ladder and start climbing, sometimes sliding carefully. The ladder is basically made of those plastic baby booths you would find in a restaurant. I’m passing other people waiting in line, hanging on for their turn to enter the underground. I reach the bottom and immediately start exploring...

The day is long—non-stop—no time to sit or think. But I’m not complaining because apparently it’s Tip-Your-Delivery-Driver-Generously-Day.

Ice Cream Cone.

Keep going...

While driving around I receive quite the text from Margot, “So how would you describe my vagina?”

Considering her and I haven’t had sex in a long time I found this to be very random and off topic. But I guess it’s not too off-basis for two exes who had a regular sex life for over 3 years.

My response: “a heavenly fantastical ravine with an ever flowing stream of the sweetest honey known to man.”

Apparently, vagina preferences and what guys thought of them were the topic of discussion with her girlfriends.

Thinking about the dead water in my life. I long for cleaner clearer fresh water.

Practicing piano. Yum.

Margot went out drinking with her girlfriends for a birthday and hit me up wanting to have a sleepover. I agreed. She shows up with a frisky and attractive attitude—to be expected after a night out. She undresses and adorns herself in the tie-dye she made me a long time ago. We tumble in the bed for a bit and kiss. She’s adamant about taking it to the next level. I could push myself to feel comfortable with it but I don’t. I can’t. I won’t.

Me: “I’m not ready for that...”

...

Her: “Get off me. I’m going to sleep.”

Offended, she twists around and closes her eyes.

Me: “I’m sorry...”

Is something wrong with me? Or have I just tied the physical and emotional together? I mean I did a long time ago when I decided I loved her. I’m protecting myself. I don’t want to get hurt again. I think this is the dead water I was identifying earlier. Give me fresh water...and not necessarily a new romantic idol. I’m talking about wholeness to replace the holeness.

Stephanie texts me, “I’m so happy and free right now. This must be what Marilyn Monroe was talking about.

Popcorn.

She’s dead asleep in the bed while I relax with that gangster movie I started watching earlier.

Eventually I join her.

She emits those cute sleepy moans and groans and mutters weird statements like, “You’re my traffic penis” and “I want a burger!” and “You’re my escape penis.”

“Margot, what are you saying? I don’t think you know what you’re saying.”

“Yes I do!”

“No you don’t.”

After drinking, her nights are always fuzzy and I could definitely sense fuzziness. She rolls over and smacks her lips on mine. We make out and God does it feel good. Her beautiful backside is presented to me...

I warned her earlier: hypothetically speaking if we were to ever have sex again I would have to cover it up...for my own protection. Granted, I’ve been holding amazing restraint anyway but you should always take precautions...

So there we are...she slips off her panties and she’s touching me in such a way that I can’t help but surrender. All the signs are there encouraging more. I’m hesitant for a long while but then it hits me and I grab the condom and go for it. It was short lived but a wonderful sexual release nonetheless. She’s in such a blissful sleepy state. Not much fazed her. But then it hits her...

“Did we just have sex?”

She’s a little blindsided by what just happened and disappointed because it had been so long since we last hooked up—we were doing so well and she was okay with the abstinence as well as I. Also, the fact that I used a condom offended her, but she should’ve expected that. The next hour involves two attempts at leaving on her behalf and blurry reflections trying to make sense of this minor occurrence. Reason is lost and extremely hard to instill in her during this state of mind. It’s like trying to talk to a squirrel. But eventually squirrels get tired of searching for acorns...

“It’s not a big deal. Let’s just go to sleep.”

We settle in and snooze away the fuzzy night...

DREAM: In the woods approaching the entrance to a place where an unstudied alien race is being held or has their base set up. Kenneth, my former landlord’s son, has taken the role of guarding it. Sloshing in the lake nearby—he’s armed with bow and arrows.

I call him out, “Kenneth!”

He’s been alerted and starts aiming his bow at random. He doesn’t recognize it’s my voice.

Me: “Kenneth! It’s Rob!”

I carefully peek my head around the corner. His multiple arrows pointed in my face. I place my hands over them.

Me: “Hey, man. It’s me.”

Stephanie drops by. Chatting in my room about the push and pull effect in veteran romantic relationships—the constant deliberate behavior that one acts out in order to leave the other person wanting. We heard through the grapevine there’s a hotel party somewhere at the beach.

We head to The Seagull Inn on Atlantic and 27th. It’s pretty low key, not too many people. Will “Huberdude”, Elliott, Josiah, Courtney Gannon (Josiah’s longtime ex-girlfriend whom neither of us have seen in years), and two other girls from William & Mary. Soft music on someone’s MacBook. Sharing PBR’s and good times...

Afterwards...we hop into Stef’s clunky yellow 85’ Mercedes, all still happily buzzed off the beer. I’m at the wheel via Stef’s discretion. Old car smell. Free spirits. Brisk hearts. Positive flow. Phantom speaker. An Arcade Fire song on the stereo. We’re loud. We’re high. Josiah pokes out of the sunroof, beer in hand, holding strong against the cold wind. It feels like a movie or a music video and alas, we’re being filmed by our memories. I look over to Stephanie to reassure her, “These are our lives, Stef...”

Our hazy time travel leads us to Rick’s Café. Eating Apple Pie with Coffee. Josiah is enamored with one of the waitresses, Megan Marker, whom we both know from shows back in the day. She’s married now with twins...but he’s a little drunk and high on life...and convinced her voice is amazing, which I don’t disagree with.

He announces across the room to her, “This is beyond my obvious crush on you. I believe in you. You have the best voice in the city!”

He draws his attention back to us at the table and looks at me intently, “Her voice deserves to be heard by the entire world. I’m fuckin’ serious.”

...

Then to Elliott’s place on 16th. Sharing a few hits out on the third floor porch but not much more than that. Not something I usually partake in but it felt right...with these friends...this night.

Back home.

Lauren tells me how a guy whom she barely knew just gave her $20 after explaining that she didn’t have any money as of late...

Her: “It gives me hope for humanity.”

Me: “These are swell times, more than you think.”

DREAM: I’m in my car ready to drive to the airport for Europe. Stephanie is coming with me and so is James Graves. I’m preparing my belongings—taking patches off my book bag because I know the safety pins won’t make it pass security. Pulling out empty binders and other things I won’t need—trying to condense my luggage. As we’re reversing out of the driveway, my boss Cecily runs out and sprays white cleaning foam all over the front of the car as a sending-off joke. Some of it gets through the open window causing me to cough. At first I thought she was mad I was ditching China Wok for a few weeks cause it’s rare to see Cecily pull a prank. We’re off down the road to reach the airport on time. I’m drinking a paper cup with a mixture of iced coke and peach. James complains about the lack of tunes on the stereo but my iPod is packed away.

Officially waking up at 1:16 p.m.

In Hampton at Tim’s studio rehearsing Musicplayer songs. Trying to get on the same page musically...he expressed his desire to stay with pop sensibilities. He’s very opinionated and honest, which I like.

On the 30-minute drive home I’m bombarded with friends wanting to hang out and I find myself a little irritated by it because I have a list of things to accomplish and the days, hours, and minutes just fly by.

Some people are dead ends in your life. Sometimes it’s hard to identify them before it’s too late. It’s terribly disappointing when you find them out too early...and you wanted so badly for them to be an open never-ending path.

As I’m leaving the bank a black Lincoln crossover accidentally swerves into my lane sideswiping the passenger side of my car. Now the window won’t roll up and my mirror is loose and my door won’t shut/open properly. The other driver is apologetic and we make a mends. The insurance agencies will handle it.

Then...to the treasurers office by the courthouses to obtain a business license. The goal is have 24-hour access to my storage unit, which I wouldn’t be able to have otherwise without one.

Grilled Cheese with Tomato. Potato Chips Trio. Mango Green Tea.

Vaginasaurs practice at Stephanie’s house. We work out two fresh jams...

"man im really proud of these new jams gurls! like, not even kidding i think this project could make some noise out there in this ridiculous music world we live in. ive got a major crush on us."

Afterwards, Stef’s mom is very hospitable, offering dinner and drink. I take a Ginger Ale and mingle in the chatter between everyone.

Back home.

Eating somebody’s leftover Beef and Rice-A-Roni with Peppers and Onions and Baby Broccoli. So spicy.

Finishing Wrecked (2010).

Coffee. It’s a rainy chilly night. I’ve got the window cracked—fresh air invading my room.

Nostalgic moments. They come and go then pass right through.

"feelings themselves are so powerful though...(remember the language of the soul)...what amazes me about them is how strong an attraction towards another person can be...so overwhelming and longing and all that good stuff...you feel like a high school kid again...crushin'.

most times i prefer to be untainted by feelings for someone because i can focus inward and not be distracted but when it happens you just don't have the power to stop it sometimes...so its best to just accept it and follow it for what it's worth. you might get hurt in the end or you might not."

DREAM: I’m in the Hilltop area of Virginia Beach and I need to get to a mechanic shop off Shore Drive...but not to fix my car...to take some kind of test that’s really important. For some reason Margot is driving my car nearby while I scope something out on the side of Wolfsnare Rd with a gang of people involved in this test. Something happens and I’m in another car. In the backseat, an attractive petite girl sits on my lap in reverse facing the front. Outside the window I see the purple rims of my car. Margot drives by and she’s not happy. And this girl sitting on top of me doesn’t look good either. Eventually I get out. I see Margot up ahead. She tosses my phone high up in the air and it lands in the grass on the side of the road. I keep my eye on a seagull that swoops down thinking its food so I know the location. I grab it and start going through it and find all my contacts, texts, and pictures have been deleted. Margot must’ve reset my phone. She had already taken off with my car. Trying to remember her phone number—it takes me a while. 450-9526? I dial it. A voice full of disdain answers hello but it sounds like she’s in an echo-y room like a bathroom.

Me: “Margot! What are you doing? Where are you?

...

Me: “What the fuck are you doing? I don’t understand why you’re mad...and for NO REASON!”

...

Me: “You’ve been nothing but a nuisance in my life.”

I’m still running while I talk out of breath. Surprised that I’m almost there. I arrive and I answer the other line. It’s some guy reminding me the test will be starting soon. I lose the phone and step into a waiting room where the Scantron test is ready for me. I catch Darren holding my laptop and bending the screen weird. He’s playing around with me pretending to break the computer—scraping the back of it against the wall.

Me: “Darren you asshole!”

I get up in anger and approach him—slapping his face a few times...

Me: “You scraped my laptop against the wall and bent the screen! That’s my life investment! You bitch!”

Officially waking up at 1:44 p.m. My legs are sweaty. Angry anxiety dreams tend to have that effect on me.

Banana. Orange Juice.

Grilled Cheese with Tomato. Salt n Vinegar Chips. Mango Green Tea.

Watching Wrecked (2010).

I get called into China Wok for a few hours. The other driver totaled his car. He’s in the hospital but he seems to be without any injuries except that he’s just shaken up.

Back home...

All the boys are home.

Elliott: “Sex is always special as long as you don’t pay for it.”

Strawberry Yogurt.

B-ball with the boys on the Friend’s School courts. Intense 2-on-2 games. Shuffling. Shooting. Male competition is not something to mess with.

Back at the house.

Stephanie shows up and joins the gathering at the card table.

Eating leftover Black Soybeans and Rice with Mixed Vegetables.

Upstairs her and I get into a good talk about the usual=old news=new news=independence=happiness=the methodology of the beginnings of relationships, how there really isn’t one and they all develop in different ways=the plane created between two people, how it’s hard to change that plane or break it. If you want to re-join with a past lover you have to be willing to face the plane again=the debacle of small-town minds wanting to be with complex/experienced minds.

>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>
I really feel like I’m in a pleasant independent place. I don’t want anyone to taint it for me or ruin the flow. I want to continue to be productive and free, free from attachment. Go!
>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>

Speaking of independence...Margot stops by for a while. Smoking a clove outside with her in the Chanticleer parking lot. It’s chilly but still a fall-less winter-less night. We talk about this and that—calm things. Getting a Davy Jones bobble head is one of her life’s ambitions. She’s wearing that purple one-piece dress that I’ve always loved. Constantly checking on my heart and how I feel. The only thing I feel is the warm remnants of our past relationship, which isn’t too overwhelming but something I can handle and understand. We’re friends. Our bond will be there for a long time running, even it’s romantic side. But my sex drive hasn’t been strong as of late, like even the past month or two. I guess it’s because I haven’t been having any, which makes sense. Man, all I’d have to do is just say the word or make a move if I really wanted to. But it’s not in my cards. I want to keep my homeostasis.

Make the effort to see everyone as they really are and not as idealized images.

A bowl of Cheerios with Brown Sugar.

Another calm night with her warm body close to mine—sidekicks while we dream.
