[i]

Waking up at 9:48 a.m. just in time to make breakfast at the Casablanca buffet. I sit with Eugene, one of the crew members of the trip, while I slurp down not-so-fresh French Toast, very fresh Eggs, and Coffee.

After some confusion on when the shuttle to the airport is arriving at the lobby we eventually turn in our key, wristband, and blue towel. Returning the blue towel is apparently part of the agreement we signed on Friday – part of a long list of strange expectations this resort has for its patrons. Meanwhile, our legs and foreheads are sweating.

In route to the airport we ride through the city. Tony attempts to provide commentary on a microphone up in the passenger seat while locals clean the windshield in hopes to make a peso.

Arriving at the Puerto Plata airport and so begins our long day of airporting. Checking bags. Getting through security. Setting up a command center before our first flight inside a fast food joint where the only outlet exists.

On the plane. Shuffling through the iPod and listening to long lost tunes. I’m squished between a sleeping dude on my left and blonde haired surfer dude on my right. Sleeping on and off but nothing out of the ordinary.

Arriving at the Miami airport. Then we have to start going through the motions again. Walking. Walking. Walking. Waiting in lines. TSA security. Customs. At some point I meet up with Caitlin and Kim at a Mojito Café near our gate. We’re surprised at how amazing the food and drinks are compared to our pickings over the weekend in Dominican Republic. Enjoying a Tomato Mozzarella Sandwich, Pita Bread with Black Bean Hummus, Salad, and a Dragon Berry Mojito.

Now onto another plane, the commuter type, or as it was once called “a closet on wheels”. We’re packing in like sardines. I keep my ears satisfied with music and read through an Adbusters. Meanwhile, lightning flashes consistently in the near distance – a cool sight along the wing of the plane.

We hit turbulence here and there but eventually land safely on the ground in good old ORF Norfolk airport. Mom picks me up and takes me home.

Recounting tales with Ana and mom about the trip.

Chamomile Tea.

Sleep 3: 30 a.m.

Sunday October 22 2017

[i]

9:40 a.m. Waking up at a decent hour so I can make the Casablanca breakfast buffet.
Scrambled Eggs. French Toast. Papaya Banana Smoothie. Tea.

Catching up on writing by “The Tower” where the only Internet abounds freely.

Checking out the gift shop for a t-shirt, cause all my shirts are dirty. I settle on a green Presidente shirt and grab a couple Dominican grown cacao bars for Ana. On a side note, the Presidente beer is literally the only beer available here, even throughout the country according to reliable sources.

I’ve been here this whole time and haven’t taken a dip in the ocean yet. I slap on some sunscreen and stroll over to the beach. The water is perfect. A man carries a tray of coconuts and pineapples to offer homemade pina coladas. I search for shells and rocks of all kinds in the sand. Such a beautiful picturesque scene – like living inside a picture of a vacation brochure.

Now it’s time to do what we came here to do. We shuttle over to another part of the resort where they hold big amphitheater sized shows. It’s hectic with all these people running around on stage and Nigel directing everyone. His goal is to keep everyone happy and make sure the show goes smoothly but in doing so sometimes he creates more chaos. In the end, we get everything ready to go. There’s always something to fix or work out – the projection isn’t showing in full rectangle wide view but rather in a circle view – no sound issues to speak of though.

Now the resort patrons have crowded up the tables. Grabbing some dinner from the big buffet they have set up. It’s overwhelming all the food there is. The cuisine is so confusing. I grab whatever looks good. Quenching my thirst with coconut water from a coconut a man chopped open with a machete.

Finally, it’s time to get on stage and do our Wink Floyd show. Most everything goes smoothly. Everyone in the band performs their hearts out. Jimmy, despite not being accustomed to it, commands the stage on lead vocals. There’s cameras everywhere (drone cameras, steady cams, and cams on long mechanical arms) filming close-up shots of each of us at any given time during the show. During “Comfortably Numb”, our encore song, Eric Edmunds has a long winded guitar solo. He walks off the stage right into a group of Canadian girls in the front row. It’s a perfect rock star moment as he wails on the strings – the girls put their arms around his legs and soak it all in. He’s a real guitar champion for sure.

Afterwards, dancers and acrobats with flames take over the stage and runway to the sounds of EDM pop music. Back stage they run in and out taking over the changing rooms. There’s barely any room to get around. Extremely fit Dominican theater dudes wear neon green and orange outfits, almost bird-like, some on stilts and some with masks. The girls look like they’re straight out of an escort website.

Later on, corralling above the ICE night club – going in and out for drinks and dancing – celebrating our successful show. With Chris and one of the Dominican locals who also played tonight. We watch Eric link up with a prostitute. I’m banned from my room temporarily. I wait it out in another hotel room where Nigel, Tony, and Jimmy are downing Maker’s Mark whisky and acting hysterical.

Eventually, it’s time to sleep after 3 a.m.

[i]

My consciousness awakens sporadically throughout the morning. My roomie for the weekend, Eric the guitar god of DEJA, over in the other bed sounds like he’s enjoying a peaceful and relieving moment. Hours later I arise from the bed and it’s time to rue the day.

I head over to what we’ve dubbed as “The Tower” for my Internet fix, the only place in the entire resort for free WiFi. Otherwise you’d pay an inconvenient fee to have it in your room. Nipping at a RX Breakfast Bar and sipping on a Coffee.

In the hotel room catching up on random stories and thoughts with Eric.

Grabbing lunch at the Casablanca buffet: Potatoes, Egg, Fruit, Plantains, Pineapple Juice.

Lounging on the beach beds catching up on writing.

Now I’m eager to find the fitness part of the resort. They have an area called Xtreme Zone and there’s a basketball court. After getting lost and asking a few people the right questions I locate the mini office where they hand out basketballs and get a chance to shoot for a little bit.

Our back line gear arrives in the hotel room. While Eric tinkers with the guitar amp I rip my hair out over this Yamaha Motif that I have no idea how to use. Fortunately, I still have my Roland Juno Gi for most of my complex patches but I still need decent piano, rhodes, and organ sounds for the bottom keyboard.

Time for dinner reservations at the Asian restaurant: Honey Glazed Tofu with Mixed Vegetables and Dumplings. And of course a Bahama Mama and a Pina Colada.

My night continues with Francisco (who will be running sound tomorrow and all around talented musician) and Chris (lead vocalist in local Virginia Beach band Audiostrobelight and our guide since he’s been here eight times now). First up, is a magic show at the coliseum. Some of the tricks are impressive but the magician includes random dance breaks in his routine to mostly EDM remixes of pop songs.

Over in the next section of the resort is a dance club downstairs called “ICE”. We walk into another world, another culture. The name of the club is irrelevant or ironic I should say, cause my glasses are fogging up from all the steam and humidity from the bodies filling into the room. Latin pop booms through the speakers. For some reason we missed the memo about wearing all white clothing. Dominican dudes dressed in white shirts and pants corral exclusively in the corner while their respective girls in flowery dresses and jean skirts shake their rump to reggaeton hip-hop beats. El Presidente is the beer of choice. Plastic cups of this cheap pilsner are slung immediately over to you when approaching the bar. We watch all the young girls hold up their phones and take selfies and videos of their friend’s asses. After a little while we head outside to the patio and link up with Nigel and Peace. Back and forth we fill up on drinks from downstairs. I’m extremely buzzed and feeling very social – enjoying my new brother friends.

Walking back over to our part of the resort and sitting down at the only place open, a Mexican joint that only serves hot dogs, hamburgers, and fries after hours. I chomp down on stale fries while we talk about our observations on this country (the food, the laws, philosophy) and how alcoholism affects working musicians.

Back at the hotel room Eric speaks his thoughts on things...

Complaining about a girl that’s been paranoid about him hanging out with other girls here.

“F*** it,” he says. “You only live one time...”

He kind of goes on tangents but it’s fun talking with him.

“I don’t wanna be buried,” he continues. “Burn my ass and float it off into space!”

“F*** all that burying shit. Put me in a litter box with cat shit all over me. I don’t care.”

“I’ve had long hair for most of my life.”

“I move around quite a lot but other than that I guess I’m not too bad.”

Sleep after 2:30 a.m.

[i]

At 4:55 a.m. my alarm goes off. Mom drives me to the airport. It seems like it’s still the night before – the sun still hides from the city.

At the airport it’s smooth sailing through check-in and TSA security. Jimmy and Tony Bullard join me on the plane. There’s a maintenance issue before we take off that lasts almost 30 minutes. But then, it’s a semi-comfortable flight to Miami – layover for a couple hours.

RX Breakfast Bar.

Back in flight mode for another 2 hours across the ocean to our destination: Dominican Republic. As soon as we get off the plane there’s a little Meringue band making noise to welcome us. Hustlers on the curbside try to make a dollar helping you transport your luggage to the van. On the drive to the resort we get a glimpse into the everyday street life here – reminds me of Indonesia – motorcycles rule the road – lanes are merely a guideline – multicolor buildings of all different architectural design sit planted in no particular order along the road.

Time to explore the terrain. People wading in the pool next to a bar – on the beach there’s a VIP only area where they have fancy beds right out in the open with white curtains adorned on the posts – it feels like I’m in an R&B video – picturesque couples lying on the beds and sitting in the Jacuzzi’s soaking in their vacation. I take a stroll along the beach – feet wading in the water. Wild dogs, cats, and peacocks roam the sand and all across the resort. I find Drew relaxing on a lawn chair – a big peaceful smile on her face.

Later on, we all have a reservation at The Blue Lagoon – the kind of place that requires a reservation and serves small delicate portions. I order the Grouper with Caribbean Salad and Mud Cake – along with fruity cocktails. Two older native gentlemen serenade us with a couple Latin tunes.

After 9:30 Elias, a very hospitable taxi driver, takes a small group of us into town to the nearest Casino. I really want to play poker but I put a limit on it up front so I don’t get trapped into buying back in multiple times. While Drew and everyone else tames the Black Jack tables I sit down at the only poker table there is. My lack of Spanish makes it difficult to communicate sometimes but overall we all know the rules and the rhythm of the game. I take a moment to observe my surroundings and realize where I’m at – at a local casino in the middle of Dominican Republic. I watch girls sit beside men at the slot machines befriending them in order to keep the men putting money into the games. The characters at my poker table each have distinct personalities comparable to a table one might play in America. One heavy set man with fat lips, whom I get the feeling is the one in charge of this place, smokes a cigar casually as he throws in chips – every now and then commenting on the game in Spanish. Meanwhile, it’s an up and down hill for me. At one point I land quads, a very rare hand. They give me a 2,000 peso bonus as a reward! I should’ve just stopped right there and walked away tripling up but I continue and feel the slow bleed of chips out of my hands. Good times.

On the drive back to the resort Elias promises he can take us to see “Senioritas” but instead we get back. Nigel tells one of his corny jokes, something about how three Jews invented air condition and their names being Low, Norm, and Max. [insert chuckle]

Finally, in the hotel room. Eric’s flipping through the TV channels, most of it with overdubbed Spanish. I’m just grateful to be in this bed.
