Inside a smaller sports arena or concert hall. Along the sides are an intricate design of ledges and ladders. It's understood that a person can climb around them and eventually make it to the top of the building. But you can't just climb straight up; you have to go in a counter-clockwise direction. The distances between each ledge are built in such a way that a human being can just barely reach. I spend the majority of my dream time exploring the ledges and trying to make it to the top level. Along the way I meet people. Meanwhile, there's some sort of concert going on in the center of the arena. I see familiar faces. Everything I have to climb over and all the things I find are very detailed. I pick up a magazine and intentionally stare at the pages. The words in my peripheral are blurry but then suddenly become clear when I direct my sights on them. And the sentences kind of make sense. I pick up a throw pillow that resembles a baby's face and try to drop it into the audience. Some girl freaks out and starts yelling at me – it appears to be Lauren Lowery.

...

I might've woken up a few times but when I go back to sleep I'm still there making my way around the ledges and get higher and higher. I find doors that lead to rooms where an old man lives. Then, doors that lead to an apartment where a family lives. In one of the bedrooms there are two teenage girls, sisters I believe. I hide under the blankets with one of them and pretend to be sleeping so the other family members don't notice me. The situation gets old so I leave. Peeping over the ledge. The concert is still going on.
I wait until a song is over and yell as loud as I can, "It's all a lie!"

Some of the workers for the arena notice the commotion and start chasing after me. I find a staircase that leads to a factory roof. Walking carefully along the plywood. I realize now that I've actually gone as high as I can and so I've accomplished my goal. I can wake up now.

Waking up at 10:40 a.m.

Ana and I make breakfast. My dad comes over to enjoy Blueberry Pancakes and Coffee with us. I was hoping my mom would be here but she's at church.

"Man, these pancakes are hearty! Delicious but heavy," I exclaim.

Later on, my dad tags along with me and experiences a "day in the life of". Stopping at Taylor's Do-it for a dish wand. Stopping by Soul Haven studios to record some vocal tracks with Nigel, Kevin, Jimmy, and others. Then, to Guitar Center to pin up some flyers and shop around. Then, to Trader Joe's. My dad's never been to one and we wanted to say hi to Ana. Then, to a pizza place called Your Pie. Solid personal pizzas to go.

[i]

At the house enjoying our Pizza and Salad together to the soundtrack of Lightnin' Hopkins. It's been a nice afternoon hanging with my dad. He pulls out a check with a significant number on it to give me as an early birthday present. I can tell it means a lot to him to be able to give me something like this. He was never the kind of dad that just gave you money and that's it. He's always made an effort to spend time with me and raise me as his own growing up. I know he cares. And I'm grateful that even though I had divorced parents they both loved me.

Watching Black Mirror (2013).

Running errands – printing out flyers for the songwriting workshop – getting groceries.

I was supposed to have a DEJA gig between Mahi Mah's and Chix at the oceanfront but because of the rain it got cancelled. My dad even drove up by himself to visit for a few days and see the show. We drive over to Mahi's for dinner anyway cause I figure we can still use the 50% off band discount.

...

While we're waiting for a table the two of us sit on a bench overlooking the ocean/boardwalk sipping on drinks and watching a few toddlers stomp around in the puddles. After 45 minutes we get a table. Monk Filets with Smashed Potato Fries and Collard Greens. The waitress informs us at the end that the check is taken care of. We're surprised. I thought it was only 50% off.

"Wow. Well that's cool!"

We only had to pay for the drinks at the bar earlier and the tip (and she got a good tip).

Back home. My dad comes in to visit some more. We sit in the living room with my mom.

"It's probably kind of weird for you guys to be in the same room like this," I point out. "That doesn't happen very often."

I sit over on the couch looking at the two of them. I can only imagine the mini nostalgic sparks going off in their heads. I look at them and think, wow if it wasn't for those two falling in love with each other I would never have existed.

I bring down Elvis and that provides plenty of entertainment.

Running errands with Ana.

Egg Salad Sandwich with Tomato. Corn Tortilla Chips with Avocado and Tomato. Honey Green Tea.

Watching a documentary about Jaco.

Teaching lessons at Music Makers. I got confused and spaced on what day it was when telling Jay, our guitar instructor, about his schedule for today. Thinking it was Monday I told him not to come in. I realize this and correct what I said to him.

I turn to my mom in disappointment and tell her, "I can't do this."

I point to the computer and around the room.

"I really can't," I add.

She encourages me and explains that I "can" do this. But this whole thing managing the store is adding more work than I've ever had before. And on top of that Drew called me and told me he's not going to renew the lease over at the music space so we'll all have to be moved out of there by the end of August. God, everything is happening in August!

Back home. Making dinner for myself but saving servings for Ana and mom.

Maple Mustard Salmon with Broccoli, Carrots, Onions, and Bamboo Rice.

At the Tidewater storage unit for Ladada rehearsal. It's been a while for me since I've played with my boys. Jon Reynolds is here to play second guitar in the band. We're trying it out for the first time. Everything he does fills in all the empty places.

Back home.

Scheduling and Music Makers business.

Egg Salad Sandwich with Cucumbers and Tomato. Potato Chips. Iced Coffee.

At Music Makers teaching the whole day. During a 30-minute break before my last lesson I tell my mom, "My head is spinning right now." She shares my sentiment. It's a lot more work dealing with parents, scheduling, payment, and other store related business. I need to just focus on teaching. My mom can hold the front down responsibly but sometimes I have to step in for certain technical things. It gets exhausting swinging back and forth from the lesson room to the outside. But really I just need to let go of certain responsibilities and free my burdens up.

Heavy Salad with Broccoli, Carrots, Spinach, Tomatoes, and Cheesy Naan Bread.

I drive out to the NorVa in Norfolk for the Kurt Vile show. Ana's playing bass in You're Jovian but I missed their set. It's a little friend reunion though. All our Norfolk friends are present. I even run into Megan Marker (it's Megan Power now) and her husband. Over a decade ago we used to perform at various local shows. She's looking for piano lessons for her twin boys. She mentions, "We're old now!" And it's true. It's strange watching all your friends from days of yore grow up, have kids, and then hand them over to you to start educating them in music.

Back home. Finishing up some last minute scheduling and studio stuff.

Hang time with Elvis.

Waking up at 11:30 a.m.

Ana made us Waffles for breakfast. I brew some Guayusa Tea to go with.

Teaching a lesson out off Lynnhaven Parkway to Jolin, the Chinese 7-year old. I was surprised to hear that she prepared two original melodies for me in C position. Such a smart and determined kid.

Scooping up Ana from the house to run some errands.

Leftover Pizza.

DEJA's got a Wall show at the Outer Banks Brewing Station in the Outer Banks. Ana and I ride up with Drew, DeeGee, and Eric in the suburban-trailer. It's a quick hour and a half trip.

Crab Cakes with Vegetables and Mashed Potatoes.

This place looks like it used to be an old church and they just gutted it out. We have an unusual show schedule cause they won't let us load in until the dinner crowd dwindles down around 9 p.m. But it's just us, no openers. We set up pretty quickly. The crowd is more interested in a dance band not an art and musical performance of a film. But that's what we have to offer. Most of them don't know how to take it but they watch in reverence.

On the drive back home late into the night. We're laughing our asses off over every little thing. Some dude and his girlfriend offered most of us a hit from a blunt before we left (Ana and I didn't take part cause we know how sensitive we can be).

Back home after 4 a.m.

Sleeping next to Ana.

Friday July 22 2016

[i]

Waking up to a text from Jimmy, "Ready when you are." It's 9:45 a.m. in Hanover, Maryland. I put my stuff together and meet Jimmy downstairs in the lobby. We've got to journey back to Virginia Beach.

On the drive talking and critiquing our performance from last night and DEJA shows in general – how super talented musicians are a dime a dozen but finding a band who can work well together isn't.

Stopping by a local bagel joint. Everything Bagel with Cream Cheese. Iced Coffee.

Continuing on 50 then to 13 (Eastern Shore).

Picking up some produce from a farmer's market off the road.

At a rest stop that Jimmy likes to stop at. While he smokes a cigarette I scan the shaded picnic area. Looking at all the etchings of people's initials and names on the trees. Some of them date back to the 90's – they look grown in and dull. A small sign appears to be eaten by the tree. A fungi bunch grown into the stump. This little scene reminds me of how important it is that I get out to nature soon. I need a natural world rejuvenation.

Back in town. Picking up my acoustic guitar from Moe's.

Home. PB&J Toast with Lentil Potato Curls and Honey Green Tea.

Napping.

Business.

Enjoying leftover Chicken, Peppers, Brussel Sprouts, Potatoes, and Spinach on the drive to Newport News. DEJA's got a gig at Hoss's. Every time we play here it's a packed and rowdy house. It's a fun couple of sets.

I'm already worn out from "touring" so to speak. Played Maryland last night – had to drive 4 and half hours today – then driving back and forth to Newport News – then tomorrow we got more driving to do heading to OBX.

Picking up some gas and a Chocolate Donut from a 7-11.

Back home.

Thursday July 21 2016

[i]

Waking up at 9:35 a.m.

Irish Oatmeal with Cinnamon, Maple Syrup, Raisins, and Kefir. Coffee.

Hitting the road – scooping up Jimmy Wiseman before the Chesapeake Bay Bridge-Tunnel toll. DEJA's got a gig in Maryland tonight. The other half of the crew is driving in separate vehicles, one towing a trailer with all our gear. But it's just Jimmy and I in my car. While flying across the bridge and tunnel we discuss the timeless quality of nature – he's an outdoorsman who loves fishing and relaxing in the tranquility of a creek or sea. When comparing natural life with human culture we move, grow, and change so quickly. Life moves fast for us as human beings all the while the rest of earth just watches and waits.

We get a scare when one of the Maryland state cops pulls us over. 71 in a 55. He's one of the decent kind who lets us off on a warning cause he considered the fact we're not from around here.

After about 4 and a half hours we arrive at the Maryland Live! Casino. Jimmy and I take a peak inside.

"I've never seen so many slot machines in my life," I tell Jimmy.

Nobody really looks like they're having a good time, or at least a rewarding time, but I could be wrong. Somewhere here someone is winning big bucks.

Settling into our Aloft hotel rooms a mile away. It's faux classy in here.

Back at the casino. Setting up on the stage at Rams Head, a venue right in the middle of all the casino action. I remember a long time ago I played a show here with Mae on this same stage. While feeling nostalgic I march along the carpet watching people try their luck at the slot machines. The beeping and cha-ching sounds go off constantly – you can hear an ambient drone of the music from all the games, a sound that keeps people affixed to their stools, eyes glued to the spinning images and numbers.

Salmon Jerky. String Beans. Jasmine Rice.

We go on at 9 p.m. 2 sets tonight. Enjoying a Strawberry Milkshake in between.

Afterwards, we load out. Then, I'm off to the poker tables. I really want to take advantage of being here to experience a real live poker setting. I fork out a hundred dollars worth of chips and sit at table 43, a perfect melting pot of characters. I win only one hand with a flush and after an hour I go out with a 9-6 full house but it gets beaten by an Ace-6 full house. Well, it was fun while it lasted. It's no fun to walk out of a casino with less money than you walked in with.

Back at the hotel settling in.

Teaching lessons at Music Makers all day.

Navel Orange. Banana.

Back home. Ana made dinner and cookies!

Tofu with Kale, Green Peppers, Onions, and Quinoa.

She's perfected the Chocolate Chip Cookie recipe. A touch of molasses and cinnamon is the key.

At the music space rehearsing with DEJA in the "bat cave" as John calls it. While we're loading up the U-Haul across the street Galaxy Music is having a jam night. Ana and I drive by and discover Kevin smoking a cigarette out front. We walk in and say hi to BJ Griffin, the owner of the recently opened music school. I love the vibe they've got going here. Even though this place is competition for Music Makers I hope we can stay connected.

Back home.

Snacking on Fruit.

Fuji Apple.

It's 8 o'clock and my head is spinning round and round. I can't stop thinking about how hard I'm working and how at the end of the month I will have made barely any income. Now that I'm responsible for the store I have to cover the overhead before I make any money. And so far with the way things have been we simply aren't making enough business to cover the overhead and make a decent living. If I actually buy the business from Drew and DeeGee I have to consider how much investing of my extra time and energy it will take to bring this business up to the top. Am I willing to sacrifice my life for the rest of the year to do it? I'm struggling with it. I honestly just want to teach and perform. I don't want to the whole shebang of a music studio. It's too much for me.

Back home. Making dinner for mom, Ana, and I: Tempeh with Broccoli, Onions, Red Peppers, Shiitake Mushrooms, and Brown Rice.

Practicing piano.

Meanwhile, Ana bakes a delicious batch of Chocolate Chip Cookies.

With a few friends exploring a memorial ground for a girl named Tina. As I tiptoe down the walkway I'm drawn to a room on the right. Inside it's supposedly where she's buried. The more in tune I get with this place the more possessed I become. Her spirit is causing my body to shake erratically – I'm speaking in tongues but still have partial control over my thoughts. I try my best to mutter out "I'm sorry!" to my friends so they know I'm okay. Everybody's surrounding me. Events in Tina's life start to flash before my eyes. I feel what she feels. After a while it stops and I'm back to normal. Flash forward to another dream where I'm explaining the whole situation to my mom.

Waking up at 11:27 a.m. Checking a few Facebook messages Ana sent me...

"I dreamt that you made plans to hang out with another girl right in front of my face and didn't care about my feelings. If there is anything that you're unhappy about you let me know or if you're dreaming of someone else and maybe I caught your dream."

I respond, "haha. what you think you're a dream catcher?! I don't need to dream about another girl nor do I need to make plans with them in my dreams when I have a real girl in the real world to do that with."

At some point towards the end of the first set he gets angry about all these little things that go wrong, something with the monitor, something with the house speakers not being set up right, and other things. [i]

Waking up at 8:35 a.m.

Leftover Pancakes and Waffles with Greek Yogurt. Green Tea.

Ana and I get scooped up by Caitlin and Kim. Boonsboro Bound! Never heard of Boonsboro but it's near Hagerstown, Maryland.

Stuck in lots of traffic on 64 before we even get close to D.C. Tallying points every time we pass John and Shelby in their car.

Kim is taking care of bank business on her laptop. She spits out some jargon about a credit score.

The rest of joke, "WTF! Where's the WD-40!"

"I don't know if my stomach is hungry or mad," Ana complains.

I feel bad cause she's got a sore on her tongue from eating a super hot cookie the other day.

Snacking on Salmon Jerky and Potato Chips.

We take an alternate more scenic route to get around the standstill traffic on 95. Entertaining ourselves with any way to obtain points – getting one point for being the first to guess what song comes on the stereo. Ana ends up winning just above me.

Arriving in the quaint mountain town of Boonsboro, Maryland. It's just one long Main Street with older housing and local storefronts. It feels almost like Richmond, or even a mini Boston with telephone wires tangled all around.

Setting up at the place they call GBoone's.

Then, Ana, Caitlin, Kim, and I scout out a cool place to grab some grub. Vesta's, a local pizza shop catches our eye and it's absolutely wonderful!

Back at the event center. Getting ready backstage – it's a labyrinth back here – one set of stairs leads to a few doors that lead to more stairs – you can easily get lost. The girls adorn themselves in groupie attire and set out their other wardrobes. It's not necessarily a packed venue but the people are spread out in the stands and tables. We do an hour long DEJA set of our epic songs tribute – take a break – then The Wall performance.

Enjoying a couple Cupcakes with Ana.

Retiring to the hotel. Ana and I are lucky to have a whole room to ourselves. Cleaning up. Enjoying the big cool new space – AC running in the corner – making love then sleeping shirtless and free at 3 a.m.

With a group of friends in a new city. We find an old donut shop on a street that goes downhill. While approaching the street turns into a four-lane train track. I figure out a way to slide down the side railings but discover a train on its way up the track. I quickly hop over to the next track just in time to avoid getting run over. A train yard worker discovers what I'm doing and hits a few levers and buttons that moves the railing away from the track and over a steep slope. I hang on for deer life and carefully climb further down. It's understood what I'm doing is against the law. Suddenly I'm riding a kind of magic carpet but it's more like a floating platform. Some guy runs a business of taxiing people around on this thing for a high price, like in the hundreds of thousands. I argue with the guy that I never made the decision to ride with him and he shouldn't be charging for this – I can't even afford to pay him.

Ana and I are in another house somewhere with a few other people. She's possessed by some kind of hostile spirit. Without thinking I take control and attempt to perform an exorcism. I use the name, "Jesus Christ" multiple times and it seems to be working cause Ana's chest raises slightly. Throughout the night this keeps happening – I keep performing the exorcism but it never seems to get resolved.

Got a Musicplayer show at Back Bay tonight. Ana and I have been rehearsing all week for this. It's not exactly a typical Musicplayer style performance but then again I guess it is. Ana and I switch off between guitar and drums. Her voice is a big hit – afterwards she receives a thousand compliments – I'm happy for her because this is what she really wants to do. My mom was able to get full videos of each song. Then, Dumb Wolves and True Body go on after us. Noel, the lead singer of True Body almost perfectly emulates the Ian Curtis of Joy Division's mannerisms and moves with the mic – a true throwback band but with a fresh modern sound at it's finest.

Back home.

We've been having A/C issues in the house lately. The abominable heat from outside has taken its toll on this 70's built jerry-rigged townhouse. After enjoying some Lentils, Kale, and Rice we have an impromptu house meeting about ways to convince Chanticleer to take care of it.
