Then off to the DEJA gig at the oceanfront. It’s our last show at the beach – we’re kicking off the Neptune Festival on the 7th Street stage. At first we’re worried about a light rain but decide to wait it out. Both Chix and Mahi’s have packed patios. After “Evil Woman” a corral of people start dancing out in front and don’t really stop until the last tune. Overall, it’s a great show. I had quite a few brain farts on keyboard parts I should undoubtedly know. It’s embarrassing sometimes but I know audiences are more forgiving than it seems.

Enjoying Salmon Sushi, Seaweed Salad, and Miso Soup on the break.

Back home.

Teaching afternoon lessons at Music Makers.

Scrambled Eggs. Toast with Non-Dairy Cream Cheese. Olive Oil Potato Chips with Avocado. Honey Green Tea.

At the Embrace The Culture festival at Town Point Park in Norfolk. I’m on with Ladada at 5 p.m. opening before other successful acts like Amasa Hines. We’ve gotten used to playing big stages like these now. I’m reminded again of how much I miss touring, and the road, and performing around the world. Our band deserves to be successful. It is something I rate as the top thing I want to do in my life, which is be successful in a band that does original music.

Bobby and Jon have prior obligations after our set. I chill with Josiah and Bianca for a bit but go solo around the park, observing all the cool features of the fest: a silent disco, gigantic Jenga, foosball, ping pong, etc. I say hello to a few familiar faces like Doug, Angel, Renee, and Kelsie. Grabbing a few Tuna Fish Tacos from a food truck and enjoying them by the harbor. A lot of things racing through my mind – questioning what I’m about to do with my life by taking on Music Makers. I just want to be happy making music.

My day continues at Jerry’s in Chesapeake for a DEJA gig. I get behind the keys and do the same thing I did last night with these guys. I’m just going through the motions – Styx, Led Zeppelin, Rush, Pink Floyd, Queen, etc. I can feel the struggle from these guys continuing to stay alive in the genre of music they grew up in. But a new generation always comes after and I simply don’t feel connected to the old generation. I can play it. I can dig it. I can understand it. But I want to feel connected with what I’m doing. After the set, I get tons of compliments about DEJA, how great they think we are. “Note for note,” someone says.

Back home. Enjoying Chocolate Cake with Ana and Elvie.

Sleep 3:30 a.m.

No Ladada rehearsal tonight so I decide to use the opportunity to attend the Thursday poker nights. Mike Gombas is here along with all the other dudes I only know from these gatherings. I actually do well throughout the night. Pocket 6’s are three times a charm win for me – Trip 6’s actually on every hand. I use the smarts I’ve accumulated over the past few years and manage to make it to the final three. Mike walks out in third place. And it’s Rob versus Rob. When it gets down to two it’s pretty much the luck of the draw. I walk out in second place and with an extra $80 in my pocket. I’m feeling good.
