Monday October 17 2016

Waking up at 10:20 a.m.

Sweet Potato Biscuits from Trader Joe’s. I burnt the bottoms of them from adding coconut oil spray. Oh well. Ana and I still eat them.

Guayusa Tea.

Taking care of errands – refilling the honey container at Heritage – dropping off documents at the bank – attempting to clean off the oil stains on our parking spots at Music Makers.

Double Egg Sandwich with Lettuce and Tomato. Corn Tortilla Chips with Salsa and Avocado. Honey Green Tea.

Coaching one rock school band with Drew.

Then, teaching lessons at Music Makers for the rest of the day.

Back home. Ana brought us Pizza from Whole Foods.

Ana, Cynthia, and I head to the music space. They wanted to play drums. I help restring Cynthia’s classical guitar.

Back home. Pumpkin Bread Pudding. Chamomile Tea.

Figuring out tunes on guitar and keyboard.

Saturday October 15 2016

Waking up at 10 a.m. I always have such vivid dreams when I drink chamomile tea before bed. But it’s difficult to describe all the details – something to do with trying to survive in a post-apocalyptic society.

Irish Oatmeal with Cinnamon, Raisins, Maple Syrup, and Kefir. Guayusa Tea.

Right at 11:30 a.m. I’m at Music Makers teaching lessons until 4:30.

Peanut Butter Toast. Coffee.

Then, off to Croatan to teach in-home lessons.

Stopping by Trader Joe’s for groceries.

Back home. Mom takes care of dinner, which I planned out: Barbecue Salmon, Roasted Cauliflower, Brussel Sprouts, Onions, and Quinoa.

Watching Kilo Two Bravo (2014).

Chamomile Tea.

[i]

Waking up at 8 a.m., obviously earlier than usual for me. But I’ve got a dentist appointment in Richmond.

Granola Bar, Banana, and Coffee.

Ana and I drive to Richmond, a smooth ride with no traffic to speak of.

Ashley, my dentist, is a fourth year at the VCU Dentistry now. We take a few x-rays and she gives my teeth a cleaning. We make plans to deal with a sensitivity I’ve been having where she last did a restoration. Also, I need to seriously consider getting my bottom molars removed. Ugh.

It’s about 12:30 p.m. Ana picks me up just outside. Unfortunately, she had a terrible experience while waiting for me and she managed to jam her right thumb when closing the car door. It’s majorly bruised under her nail and she’s in so much pain it’s making her cry. I feel so bad. She explains she was making sure she remembered to not lock the keys inside the car so when she went to slam the door shut she reached her arm back to stop it and BAM! Last night I iterated to her how important it was to be careful about the keys so I feel like it’s my fault – maybe if I hadn’t of said anything it wouldn’t have happened.

At Harrison Street Café we get her a bag of ice to put on it. She’s not hungry anymore. But I am.

Egg, Cheese, Spinach, and Onion Burrito.

A trip to Richmond isn’t complete without visiting Diversity Thrift. Finding a few useful items: a water boiler for the store, a mini dry erase board, and candles.

Discovering Sugar Shack is closed for renovations. I’ve got a craving for donuts so we seek out another coffee shop called Lamplighter. Enjoying a huge Cinnamon Roll and Tea.

Back on the road to Virginia Beach. Even with sleepy eyes and dealing with rush hour traffic we arrive home safely.

Teaching one make-up lesson at the store.

Then, off to the Rec to get some exercise in on the basketball courts.

Back home. I brought Thai food from Bangkok Garden for us: Stir-fry Vegetables in Garlic Sauce and Rice. Ana really wanted curry vegetables. Later on, I wrap up her finger as best I can and give her some generic Vicodin. She’s got a grateful face on.

“Thank you for taking care of me,” she says.

I explain how it really bothers me when people close to me are in pain. “I just hate it. Even Elvis having to deal with all these fleas – I can’t ever feel at ease.”

Chamomile Tea.

[i]

Waking up at 11:30 a.m.

Irish Oatmeal with Cinnamon, Raisins, Maple Syrup, and Kefir. Guayusa Tea.

At the Rec – it’s finally open after having no power the past few days. Playing a few pick-up basketball games of 3 on 3. Three games are played and we win the series 2-1.

Tuna Salad Sandwich with Tomato. Potato Chips with Avocado. Honey Green Tea.

Watching 13TH (2016).

Teaching lessons at Music Makers all day.

Back home.

Making homemade Pizza with this gluten-free dough (I actually don’t care for gluten-free stuff but this is what was in the freezer).

Later on, after Ana arrives home, it’s time to give Elvis his first flea treatment bath. He’s been having a serious problem with fleas. Of course, this is no easy task. Ana has to hold him down while I shampoo his fur. In the end I walk away with plenty of battle scars on my arms and chest from him trying to get away.

Settling down with Chamomile Tea.

Sleep 3:30 a.m.

Catching up on business.

Teaching a few lessons.

Chicken Salad Sandwich. Corn Tortilla Chips with Avocado and Tomato. Honey Green Tea.

Back at Music Makers teaching lessons. When teaching Megan and Elly, who are in a rock school band together, I focus the lesson on microphone technique, rocker style – giving them both a bit of history into punk rock since we’re learning a Ramones song.

Dinner: Tempeh, Red Peppers, Onions, Broccoli, Cauliflower, Carrots, and Bamboo Rice.

Watching Independence Day: Resurgence (2016).

At the space practicing drums with Ana and finishing a flyer for the rock school show.

[i]

Waking up at 11 a.m.

Irish Oatmeal with Cinnamon, Raisins, Maple Syrup, and Kefir. Oolong Tea.

I drive over to the Rec only to find out they’re without power. So I settle on shooting the ball around on the street courts nearby.

Business.

Toasted PB&J. Potato Lentil Curls. Honey Green Tea.

Teaching lessons all day at Music Makers.

As soon as I get off at 8 p.m. I scoop up Will, Ana, and Cynthia from the house and we head to the rock show at Toast in Norfolk. Eating leftover Brown Rice Pasta on the way and a special Pumpkin Toast later at the bar. I’m playing with Ladada alongside Mas Y Mas and newly discovered favorite, Omni.

There’s a Ping Pong table set up that creates hours of enjoyment for all.

Back home. On the drive home we discuss the difficulties and differences between our generation’s understanding of romantic relationships and our parent’s generation. Settling down and nesting early in your 20’s was normal. Now it’s not uncommon to be single well into your 30’s.

Sleep next to Ana at 3:30 a.m.

[i]

Waking up at 10:30 a.m. The house is still silent. The power hasn’t come back on. Floods are a major issue in certain areas of VB and Norfolk.

Honey Crunch n’ Oats with a Banana.

And yet, we’re still on for rock school except for one band. Jimmy isn’t available unfortunately. So it’s up to me to hold the reigns. For most of the bands I have to play guitar or bass. After Ana plays drums in the kids band she sticks around to fill in on bass for the adult band. We solidify The Go Go’s “We Got the Beat” and start learning “Love Me Two Times” by The Doors.

Somewhere in between I eat lunch: PB&J, Potato Lentil Curls, and Honey Green Tea.

Back home. Vacuuming up all the diatomaceous earth (and hopefully all the fleas).

Chicken and Dumplings (mom style) with Carrots and Kale.

Ana and I hop in the car and head to Norfolk to visit Phil and Cheongah at Elliott’s. They’re in town for the weekend. No power but Elliott’s got a small generator. In the dim lit living room – sipping on Modelos – playing Pass the Pigs – the second Trump-Hilary debate on in the background. JP and Maria stop by.

Eventually, Phil, Ana, and I move along to Josiah and Bianca’s new pad. Snacking on Popcorn and sipping on Sparkling Wine. It’s nice to just hang out with friends when there’s no event or show I’m responsible for. Just pure camaraderie.

Driving back home – Ana at the wheel – seems like it takes forever to get home with all the flood detours.

Sleep 3:30 a.m.

Waking up at 11 a.m.

Teaching lessons at Music Makers all afternoon.

Banana.

Toasted PB&J. Potato Chips. Honey Green Tea.

Finishing The Infiltrator (2016).

The peak of the storm is here. Its constant rainfall and wind. But nothing’s gonna stop me from running errands: taking the recycle, getting gas, buying flea treatment stuff for the cat (we discovered he had fleas last night).

Taking precautionary measures and spreading diatomaceous earth all around the house.

Enjoying dinner with mom: Barbecue Salmon, Brussel Sprouts, Cauliflower, Onions, Shishito Peppers, and Bamboo Rice.

Elvis had three major things happen to him tonight. I clipped his claws, I used a flea comb on him, and we attached a flea collar to his neck. In all instances they were traumatic moments for him.

Ana arrives home from work with Aj, who helps us with some of the Elvis duties. Sipping on Red Wine.

Later on, Ana and I head to the music space to work on drums and jam.

When we return to Chanticleer we find the whole neighborhood is blacked out.

“Ha! Figures that would happen here first,” I say.

I find a few candles hidden away in a crafts crate and light them up.

Sleep 2:45 a.m.

[i]

Waking up at 11 a.m.

Irish Oatmeal with Cinnamon, Raisins, Maple Syrup, and Kefir. Coffee.

Meeting with Drew, DeeGee, and their attorney, Richard Shurtz, at Music Makers. My mom stands by and witnesses everything. I pull out the fold out wooden table and we go through all the documents that will elect me as official owner of Music Makers. I’m only doing partial payment though. The big reason we’re doing it this way is so I can actually apply for a business loan. I can do that from this point forward. It feels good to make it this far.

Getting groceries at Trader Joe’s with Ana.

No Ladada practice tonight so I head over to poker night with the boys. Surviving well past halftime but in the end the cards just didn’t go in my favor.

Back home. Enjoying some Ice Cream with Ana. Giving Elvis plenty of attention – rubbing his neck where the cone is. I’m know he’s tired of wearing this thing.

Chamomile Tea.

☼ ▬

Out on a playground playing some pick-up basketball games. I’m not doing too good. It feels like it’s been too long since I played. I don’t recognize these courts but they seem familiar. While waiting for the bigger games to start I see in the near distance a few people shooting on another court in an alley between two buildings. The closer I go the weirder things get. There’re two families living inside a decent sized kennel designed for dogs. It doesn’t make sense. I start clomping my feet into muddy ground. The further I go the deeper my feet get. The water is warm. I hear Ana’s voice in my mind react to how warm it is. This place starts to turn into a pond with algae and other vegetation. I’m half naked now. I let myself submerge into the water. I can feel bubbles being pumped out from underneath as if this was a Jacuzzi. Eventually, the pond pushes me out into a waterfall that leads into a storage unit parking lot.

Waking up at 11:20 a.m.

Jimmy and I got four rock school sessions to coach until 6:30.

In between enjoying a PB&J with Potato Chips and Honey Green Tea.

Cashews.

Back home after 9:30. Mom helps me warm up dinner: Beans, Baby Broccoli, Carrots, and Brown Rice.

Watching The Finest Hours (2016).

Ice Cream. It might be only a pint but I’ve eaten the whole tub. I’ve started a bad habit that needs to stop now. But I guess it’ll be a good experiment to see if I can even gain weight. The Rec has been closed for a week so I haven’t exercised in a while. Can’t wait to get back into it tomorrow.

At the shop working on keyboard patches and playing piano.

Got the rest of the day free...but only free to get stuff done. Vacuuming out the car. Picking up some things at Target.

...

While mom takes on the cleaning of the upstairs bathroom I take Ana’s room. I want to surprise her by picking up all her clothes, washing them, and actually putting them away (something she has difficulty keeping up with). Later on, we Facetime each other. I reveal the surprise.

Fried Dover Sole with Cornbread, Sweet Potato, and Broccoli Slaw.

Going for a much deserved night bike ride to the oceanfront. The Neptune Festival food carts and tents are all closed up. Pokemon Go people still crowd up the boardwalk at the 1st Street jetty and 40th Street. There’s gotta be a point when this fad dies down.

Back home. Continuing the labor of cleaning Ana’s laundry and organizing her closet.

Ice Cream.

Running around to the banks – withdrawal cash – deposit here, deposit there.

PB&J Toast. Potato Chips. Honey Green Tea.

Teaching my in-home lessons.

Back home for a little bit. Enjoying Coffee and an Apple.

Then off to the DEJA gig at the oceanfront. It’s our last show at the beach – we’re kicking off the Neptune Festival on the 7th Street stage. At first we’re worried about a light rain but decide to wait it out. Both Chix and Mahi’s have packed patios. After “Evil Woman” a corral of people start dancing out in front and don’t really stop until the last tune. Overall, it’s a great show. I had quite a few brain farts on keyboard parts I should undoubtedly know. It’s embarrassing sometimes but I know audiences are more forgiving than it seems.

Enjoying Salmon Sushi, Seaweed Salad, and Miso Soup on the break.
