Waking up shortly after 10 a.m.

Oatmeal with Cinnamon, Strawberries, Maple Syrup, and Almond Milk. English Breakfast Tea.

Ana and I drive out to the Norfolk Sentara hospital where mom is finally awake from surgery. It’s quite a drive and a process to get to her room but we make it. She’s got all kinds of stitches but the tumor was successfully removed. Unfortunately, there’s bits of the cancer still rooted in her spine and thorax – it’s been described like an octopus. But we’re still in high hopes she’s going to beat this thing 100%. This surgery is a huge milestone in her cancer fight.

We hang out with her for a long time while helping her get situated and keeping her lips moist. She’s in a lot of pain – they’ve got her on some morphine. I feel bad for her that she has to experience so much pain. But she’s a strong woman.

Back home for just enough time to grab a bite to eat: Egg, leftover Pizza, Half a Rainbow Wrap, Chips, and Coffee.

At Music Makers going about the day teaching and helping Rachel hold down the front desk.

Back home. Making a quick dinner: Vegetable Fried Rice with Snow Peas and Carrots.

Coaching the kid band rehearsal from 9 to 10:30 – a last minute reschedule so they can get all their rehearsal time in. It’s a fun one.

Back home. Catching up on business and talking with Ana. We get into another bind, but about her being willing to ask to borrow a guitar amp for a show she’s doing Saturday. It’s a stressful conversation cause she’s so unwilling to accept solutions that are easy. It’s not an ego thing for her, she just has this thing where she wants to be independent and handle things on her own. But I try to explain she’s a part of a community and it’s okay to ask help from her community.

Sleep 4 a.m.
