☼ ○ ▬

In an apartment that Art and I are renting. A black metal fireplace built into the middle of the room. As a prank or joke our friend Emily hides inside of it. Our group knows a bomb is set to go off, or maybe we know a fire will set ablaze the whole apartment and cause a mass scare. Art, myself, and the rest of the group leave the building to save ourselves. We traverse down the street and cross the border of Mexico – forgetting about the danger we left behind. Dumpster diving adventures ensue. I hop in and toss bunches of bananas and watermelons to needy Mexican families standing by. A punk biker gang joins in on the action.

...

Later, Art and I can see a billow of smoke from our apartment building faraway. We decide to investigate. We watch people clamoring to exit the building. Climbing the flights of stairs to get to the third floor in hopes that I can save our friend. I don’t have much hope. Upon arrival I find what used to be our apartment is now a department store. Customers and Employees hanging about as if nothing ever happened. I’m reminded that I’m dreaming by an unknown inhibition. Therefore I’m aware I should have no fear of any consequences. I talk to this fat black lady sitting in a chair and question some of the events of today.

Me: “What am I missing here?”

Lady: “Your gear.”

Me: “My gear?”

I think she doesn’t understand what I’m asking. Whatever. I scan the people in the room. I approach a very attractive female employee. With the idea of no consequence in mind I invite her around the corner where we engage in sexual activities. She leans up against the wall with her ass sticking out to me in full bloom. What do I have to lose?

▬ ○ ☼ ○ ▬

Exploring a mall. I approach a girl working the sales floor of Nordstrom or some upscale department store. Her nametag says, Sndy, but she goes by Noah. I find her overwhelmingly attractive. We met in passing earlier. Now she recognizes a spark between us. We flirt and work at finding ways to get privacy but she’s on the clock and constantly has to deal with customers.

Waking up around 11:40 a.m.

Blueberries. Banana. Orange Juice.

All day shift at China Wok.

Thankfully the sky is overcast today, blanketing the powerful sun behind grey clouds.

Peanut Butter Bagel. Tortilla Chips with Salsa and Avocado. Aloe Vera Drink.

The day continues...and into the night.

Eating up the last of the Vegan Banana Chocolate Chip Cookies.

During the last hour I get the chance to have a phone conversation with Kristin. I sense a lack of enthusiasm. I feel a wall and ask about it. She’s disappointed with what’s going on with us and, like a machine gun, shoots through a list of points explaining it. I feel battered as she speaks in such a callous tone breaking me down. I’m bombarded with all these up-front expectations. They’re not unreasonable ones, not in the least bit, but she comes across as overwhelmingly mean. There’s a different kind of dysfunction to this that I don’t know how to deal with. The two of us have to re-learn how to communicate because we’re both used to communicating with another person (our exes). It’s a whole new ball game. I have to keep reminding myself that. But it’s like she’s demanding a revolution for an oppression that hasn’t even happened yet. Will it happen though? Does she see that?

...

There’s a conflict of time, or at least it’s being foreshadowed. I’m all wrapped up in my life with my house situation, my music, etc. She claims I want something easy, someone that’s just going “to crawl into a slot in my life”.

...

But how did things get so dark between us this quick? Maybe I just don’t know her very well yet. Is this a bad sign? What would it be like if we were dating and an argument arose? Is this how all problems are going to be dealt with? With an overwhelming sensation of being broken down? Is this a resounding red flag? I think it is. But why am I fighting? She questions why I’m fighting. She was hoping after the other night’s heat I would just walk away from this.

“But I’m not that kind of person, Kristin! I don’t do that. I can’t just build up walls quickly like you and cut people out of my life.”

Maybe I should learn to do that. Maybe I should recognize this for what it really is, at least for me. Poison. Toxin. Female toxin that very well may hold me back from great things. But the other part of me thinks I could benefit from an intense loving relationship with someone like her.

...

I feel sad. My body’s shaking. I feel uncomfortable and helpless. Things are messy. She takes responsibility for her tendency to make things messy.

Me: “Is it possible to make your point without being messy?”

I leave her with a few brief statements because I’m needed inside the restaurant so I can count out.

Me: “Kristin, I like you. I really do. I have genuine emotions and genuine affections for you. This is important to me. And if you want this to work out...if you want to give this any chance at all, all I ask is that you have an inkling of patience with me. That’s it. Okay?”

Her: “I don’t know, dude.”

Me: “Have some space to yourself and I’ll talk to you later. I gotta go.”

Her: “Okay. Bye.”

Elliott encourages a round of hoops on the Friends School courts. We shoot around the ball while simultaneously shooting the shit about our lives and the girls in them. Feeling a little more empowered as we talk...feeling more concrete about the ideas I’ve been mulling over in my head. It’s nice to a have a male-to-male understanding. It’s about edification and affirmation. If these courts could talk...

Back home. Elliott takes off.

[i]

Alarm goes off at 11:11 a.m. I wake up from dreams filled with anxiety.

[Text message]

Kristin: “I’m scared bc you have a hold on my heart and I might not be able to run away from these feelings.”

Me: “do I really have that strong of a hold on your heart?”

Kristin: “More than anyone else.”

...

Kristin: “I see myself wanting to give so much to you, that is something I haven’t felt in a long time. My heart has been shut off and you turned something on in it and now I’m trying to tame my feelings bc I have a lot to give and I feel too intense for you at the moment. That feeling of too intense makes my heart wither and want to give to someone else even though my mind says no. I am usually ruled by my brain and I’m being ruled by my heart something I know nothing about. I wish I could tell you why it’s this way but I can’t.”

Me: “I think I understand what you’re saying. the power of the heart is difficult to comprehend. I enjoy intensity Kristin. I really do. I am also of that intense nature. I wish I was more open to being as intense at the moment. unfortunately the monsters that rule me hold me back from that...at least for now.”

Kristin: “Yeah that hurts. I feel that though...”

Apricot. Strawberries. Orange Juice.

All day shift at China Wok.

Me: “our conversations last night reminded me of the kind I would have with someone I was involved with for a long time already. it shocks me to be having such in depth introspect so early on...and it almost pushes me away but I understand the purpose.”

Kristin: “You’re right I am all or nothing. So I feel I have no choice but to be nothing. That wasn’t my intention to push you away but if that’s the case then you may never be able to handle me. Do your own thing Robert, let the monsters rule you. I’ll be fine on my own. I only have chosen to let things out with you bc I thought I could but I see now I was wrong. I thought you would get me, and understand my affections. They seem to perplex you and you are not ready. I will shut these feelings out and let them fade away.”

Me: “you have not pushed me away. I said almost. and I do GET you. I am not perplexed by your affections Kristin. I have affections for you too you know. I just need a lot of space in a relationship in general. because of my life and what I want to accomplish I don’t feel I’m gong to be able to give you 5 days a week, as you stated last night. I guess that’s what scares me. I want to give you me but I value my personal time. it may sound selfish but its just how my needs work.”

Kristin: “I understand that. I don’t know if I could/would be happy. I don’t want to take away from what’s important in your life. But I like being number 1. I don’t want you to feel that you need to pick. But I know myself I guess enough to know that your need for alone time could be a huge disconnect for me. My two ways of showing love/affection is through spending time with each other including sex and verbally words of affirmation. I need those to survive.”

Me: “I hate this. I just wanna watch Addams family with you and role play and enjoy each others company because I feel we get along so well.”

Kristin: “Ok. Sure. I think too much. I want to know that I have a part of you though.”

Me: “of course you do!”

Kristin: “What do you want me to do. And I’ll try and do that. I want this to work out.”

Me: “I want us to be a part of each other’s lives.”

Grilled Cheese (Soy) with Tomato. Five Guys French Fries with Ketchup. Lemonade.

It’s been at least five hours now and the deliveries have been non-stop. Sun glaring on my driver’s arm. The wind blowing through my black thinning hair. New tunes blaring on the stereo. I’m in a work daze. Stop here. Stop there. Keep going. No stopping. No thinking. Just drive...

My favorite customer, Rob off Lynnhaven Drive, calls after a few months of hibernation. I haven’t heard from him in a long time. I thought maybe he died but no, he’s alive and kicking and still asking for a bottle of cheap bourbon along with his Chinese food. Altogether he places three orders throughout the day. In his house delivering the last one, he requests I place the bag of food in the fridge for him while he signs the credit receipt.

Rob: “Just squeeze it in there wherever you can find space!”

Upon opening the door of the fridge I observe a few baby cock roaches scatter along the side. Wow.

Snacking on Vegan Banana Chocolate Chip Cookies.

The night continues...

Stacking up the tips I suppose, but also the miles.

Finally off work – back at home. Settling down in my computer chair with dinner...

Tofu with Broccoli, Snow Peas, Onions, and Rice in Garlic Sauce. Lionshead Pilsner.

Catching up on some writing.

Chatting with Kristin over the phone about our experiences today. Our words are dramatically light hearted compared to last night and earlier today. No anxiety-ridden dreams tonight I think.

☼ ○ ▬

My mother has moved out of her house with Jimmy and into a condo in what’s understood to be Chase Pointe Circle, or Latitudes Apartments, down the street from Chanticleer, but it’s exterior has a haunting European design. It’s nighttime and the streetlights glow making it a dreary urban scene. I walk up to the third floor and into the apartment. Jimmy is there doing some kind of handy work on a door, but he doesn’t live there, just my mom, which doesn’t make any sense to me but everything seems to be normal. I step back outside for some fresh air. I catch a beautiful picturesque scene of a full moon hovering over the horizon of a hill with a fleet of swans flying overhead. Upon returning it’s proving difficult to find my way back. I keep hitting the top story and missing the third floor. I get lost in a maze of stairwells and hallways.

▬ ○ ☼

Waking up off and on throughout the morning. It’s after 10 a.m. We’re cuddling and holding each other. It’s strange to be in Margot’s bed but then again so familiar too. I wanted to be satisfied with mere affection and I think she would’ve been too. But damn, it just gets too hot in here...in this space between us. Touch me. Touch you. Sharing sexual pleasure once again.

………………………………………………

What the fuck is wrong with me? I’m getting entrapped in a cycle of a disenchanting sexual corruption. Even though I’m not dating Kristin I have still been seeing her and there’s an understanding of commitment to the cause before any rash moves are made. So I feel somewhat guilty because I’ve convinced her I was over Margot, which I am. I think about her, I miss her sometimes, but I am in no way emotionally wrapped up in her. I’ve explained this to Kristin. But now these actions by themselves prove the opposite. I would’ve been fine staying home and not migrating to Margot’s place. I know I made a choice but I was practically coerced. I’ve betrayed so many.

Back home.

Scrambled Eggs. Toast. Orange Juice. Strawberries.

Dropping my car off at the shop on 17th street for an oil change. It’s going to be a few hours so I ride back on my bike.

Tortilla Chips with Salsa and Avocado. Strawberry Kombucha. Banana.

Art stops by and updates me on the perilous business situation he got himself wrapped up in. He kindly takes me to my car.

Dutched Cocoa Crème Cookies. More Kombucha.

James Graves stops by after working out. Just as we’re talking I receive a call from China Wok. They need help. So James tags alongside me in the car while I do my China Wok thing for an hour and a half. We engage in a much-needed pow wow – discussing our respective woes and relationship issues.

...

After the shift we drop into the Total Wine store that just opened up, replacing where Borders used to be. We build our own six-pack of beers and bring it back home.

...

Kristin’s here and the American couch surfers as well. Sharing dinner.

Chic Peas with Broccoli, Peppers, Onions, Rice, and Garlic Bread.

James: “Isn’t it nice that we can eat dinner together as a family?”

Sipping on our pricey beers.

Conversation shifts between the existence of broccoli worms to analyzing new agey paintings from a book.

...

James and I start blowing melodically on the almost empty beer bottles...

[WHOO WHOO WHOO]

Kristin comments jokingly, “Stop being so fucking artsy dude.”

Radar: “So much Artsy.”

Kristin: “It’s just so organic and meaningful in here right now I can’t fucking handle it!”

[Haha]

We continue and progress into harmonic intervals...

[WHOO WHOO WHOO]

Kristin: “Hipster commune. Do you feel a little hipster in here?”

Radar: “Yeah kinda.”

Monica: “A little bit.”

Kristin: “Like a hipster breeze.

Radar: “I feel like I should be at a coffee shop...”

Kristin: “Reading poetry that you wrote when you were a kid. Or you just sit there and speak freely what’s on your mind. And everyone will be like, oh man that’s so fucking meaningful.

...

Time to make Chocolate Chip Cookies, except we concoct a Vegan recipe using a mixture of vegetable oil, vegan butter, and bananas. They turn out splendid. We all enjoy them with some Almond Milk.

[ii]

A black friend of Kevin and Richie’s takes notice to the Shaquille O’Neal picture we have hanging up on the wall...“Shaq is sooo black!!”

[Everybody laughs]

“This IS the color black. Is that not not even brown a little bit?”

...

In her classic animated style Kristin reacts to the dirty bathroom, “The filth of your apartment is like getting to me right now.”

Me: “Shut up. There’s no filth to it. I just vacuumed the whole house!”

Kristin: “Robert, I counted. There are five pubes...on the toilet bowl...downstairs!”

[haha]

...

There’s commotion in Kevin’s room as he’s pulling out the measuring tape to envision moving his bed around. I gave him the idea so his lamp could be more conveniently placed in the room.

Me: “Dude, let me help you with feng shui.”

Kevin: “I don’t speak Spanish, Robert.”

[haha]

...

Then, downstairs we bust out the markers and drawing utensils. James draws a fun portrait of Kristin. I finish up a piece I worked on a month ago.

Later in the night Kristin and I retreat to my bedroom. But things aren’t as upbeat as I would expect and our interaction takes a nosedive. I might have offended her in a subtle way. There’s a conflict. She’s ready to dive into a relationship apparent in her dissatisfaction. A terrible eager insecurity comes out. I’m sort of blindsided, as I didn’t see the depth of this limbo problem. It even gets mildly hostile at some point. I don’t know how to handle this. I feel burnt out. We’re locked in quite a debate for at least two or three hours. In the midst of it I get a call from Darren about him needing a jumpstart. We go together and I end up just bringing him back home. Kristin and I stay in the car and continue our pressing thoughts.

Her: “You’re just so wrapped up in your life here.”

...

Me: “Maybe I’m meant to be alone forever...a grandfather.”

I don’t like this mood between her and I – this antsy anxious callous mood. She leaves on a frantic note.

...

Settled down in my bed on the phone talking for a little bit longer as the late night hour looms over my head. She says something I think sums up the issue, “I’m hoping for too much too soon. I can’t be wrapped up in your life.”

...

It’s long after 4 a.m. The conversation ends somewhat sweetly and I pummel through the pre-sleep phase with distressing thoughts.

[i]

Waking up super late – around 1:45 p.m.

Hot Oat Bran with Cinnamon, Brown Sugar, Blueberries, and Almond Milk.

Watching Swimming with Sharks (1994).

Downloading music.

Grilled Cheese (Soy) with Tomato. Salt n Vinegar Chips. Aloe Vera Drink.

Finishing the movie.

Fixing the vacuum cleaner and vacuuming my room – changing bed sheets – misc house chores.

Rewarding myself with a Caramel-Filled Chocolate Bar.

...

Kristin calls with some heavy thoughts about the limbo she feels like she’s (we’re) in. Worried that she’s wasting her time...

...

Me: “Maybe you’re just a shiftless dreamer. A lot of people are. Not everyone can be a visionary.”

...

Her: “You just want me to be so patient and tolerant of your life.”

...

Her: “I like to be taken seriously. I think I just deserve to have time spent with me. I’m like really fragile.”

...

Her: “I just feel like you wanna float.”

...

I stay preoccupied with things and keep myself busy. We both see this as a red flag, a problem we could have in the future if we were to date. The conversation hits intense levels but simmers down with clear and honest reflections.

Friends and roommates downstairs. Making dinner.

Tuna Steak with Broccoli, Green Peppers, Carrots, Onions, and Rice.

I share some of the unfiltered sake I got from Kotobuki with everyone.

...

Making my bed – spreading out fresh new sheets – putting away clothes. Gillian walks in. I encourage a night walk through the neighborhood. Sipping on a Hard Cider and smoking a clove. Talking about the future and other such things in life. Passing through The Friends School. The swings. Atop the slide. Enclosed in the plastic barricade. A familiar sexual tension. An intrusive temptation.

...

We return to the house. I check my phone, which I left behind, to find Margot calling me. Really? Again? And I’ve missed exactly 62 missed calls, just like last time. My goodness. And always at desperate emotional hours. Let’s go through the text messages...

“Do not ignore me just cause ‘we shouldn’t be talking’ call me back!”

“Look I’m outside your house right now so either you come out or I’m coming in. Your choice. I know you’re here. Look I saw Darren at the window. Obv you know I’m around. Get the fuck out of your house and talk to me. Or at least answer your goddamn phone and stop being such a bitch. I’m not drunk but sure as hell pissed.”

“I’m relentless and you know this. So you come out right now and talk to me or I keep calling till you pick up the phone.”

“You need to answer my calls RIGHT NOW”

“Look I don’t want to act crazy to get your attention but if that’s the only thing that’ll do it then you leave me no choice. ANSWER YOUR PHONE NOW. I DO NOT CARE WHO THE FUCK YOURE WITH THEY ARE NOWHERE NEAR AS IMPORTANT AS ME”

“You are such a fucking coward. How about you man up and answer your phone? But I’m sure you won’t do that cause you’re such a pussy bitch. Grow some goddamn ballz. Oh and tell that bitch you’re fucking that I said eat shit and die.”

Of course I’m just now reading these. I decide to call her back. She’s not drunk but had a bad day fueled by people flaking out on her. And of course I’m her last resort. We engage in a conversation – listening to her vent to me about all her friends being unavailable. She tries to convince me to come over and spend the night in her bed. I’m apprehensive...

“This is bad timing.”

Oh the female toxin that consumes my life. I hate it but I can’t leave it. It’s near impossible.

I drive over to her place. It’s after 2:30 a.m. I jump into bed with her. Holding. Snuggling. This is all she wanted. Someone whom she knows cares lying next to her.

I make fun of her, “Why don’t you just get a human sized stuffed animal?”

Her: “Because. It’s not the same.”

...

Chatting for a little bit before we fall asleep.

[i]

Waking up around 1 p.m.

Apricot. Strawberry Cereal Bar. Orange Juice.

Grocery shopping. The Heritage. Trader Joe’s. Target. While at Target I always think of Margot because she frequents this place and wonder if I’ll ever run into her. I imagine breaking the awkward ice and smothering her with a hug upon sight. But I think she would probably feel weird. Even though I’ve had run-ins with her showing up at my house this past month I’m starting to feel a real distance. I would be dishonest if I said I didn’t miss her and didn’t ever think about her. But time is carefully painting over my mind with the purest of whites. And I’m starting to feel the transformation.

Grilled Cheese (Soy) with Tomato. Tortilla Chips with Salsa. Pomegranate Cherry Ade.

Watching Casino Jack (2010).

Stretching. Exercising. Playing new music.

I hop in the car and meet up with Kristin in Norfolk. I’m supposed to meet her at the apartment. I call and text but no response. The foyer door is locked and she would have to let me in. So I take it upon myself to climb up the fire escape stairs and knock on the back door. Her roommate opens up and lets me in. Kristin was napping. She’s embarrassed. Then we dine in at Kotobuki, the same place we ate at about a month ago...a time when we didn’t know one another so well.

Ordering four different vegan sushi rolls along with a bottle of that exquisite unfiltered white sake. Eating our sushi in sync.

...

Me: “I just wanna scoop out your eyeballs.”

Her: “Then I won’t see.”

Me: “Maybe you’ll see more clearly.”

Her: “oh save me from my shallow life!”

[Laughter]

...

Oreo Tempura for dessert.

...

We leave and settle down in her apartment. She plops on the bed...

Her: “So what’s up? What do you wanna do—?”

I interrupt her questions by hovering over her body. We kiss and tap into mild foreplay that escalates into sex. It’s enriching to the spirit. I can’t finish though and eventually droop out. Condoms tend to act as an inhibitor to orgasm. In the back of my mind I wonder if this is a chemistry problem but I’m not convinced it can be chalked up to that.

Afterwards, we lie down eating strawberries and watching Addams Family (1991). She’s so adorable as she rolls around vying for affection and pampering. At one point Depeche Mode comes up on the iPod stereo and she starts dancing on the wooden floor.

Me: “I like to watch you dance.”

...

I warn her I will be going around midnight.

Her: “What happens at midnight?”

Me: “I turn into a toad. Actually I turn into a werewolf.”

She reaches her hand out over my hairy chest, “I can tell.”

Back home. Finishing Casino Jack (2010).

“Cause in reality, mediocrity is where most people live. Mediocrity is the elephant in the room. It's ubiquitous. Mediocrity in your schools. It's in your dreams. It's in your family. And those of us who know this - those of us who understand the disease of the dull - we do something about it. We do more because we have to. The deck was always stacked against us. You're either a big leaguer, or you're a slave clawing your way onto the "C" train.”

Sleep at some late hour.

[i]

Getting out of bed just before noon, officially.

Coffee with Brown Sugar and Almond Milk. Strawberry Cereal Bar.

Elliott picks me up from the house. It’s his birthday and he’s organized a small group of friends to enjoy a fun-filled day at Busch Gardens. We drive to Kempsville to pick up his cousin, Taylor. On the way there we spot three vultures picking around in a grassy yard off the side of the road.

Me: “What are vultures doing in Virginia Beach???”

[Humorous shock]

Me: “That would probably make a great kids movie. Three vultures from Africa stuck in America. They’ll be hanging out at Burger King or something around seagulls...”

Elliott: “Like Hell’s Angels.”

[ii]

We stop in Norfolk to hook up with Emily, Michelle, Doug, and John Flowers.

In route to Williamsburg – caravanning with two cars.

Peanut Butter Sandwich. Grapes. Orange Juice.

Frustrated with the cardboard texture and flavor of the sandwich, I toss the last of it out the window but aim at Michelle’s car in front of us. It slides across the roof and over the front windshield. This causes a mild laugh riot.

...

Finally there. Chugging a few beers out of the trunk before we venture into the park. They’ve only got one parking lot open and seem to be at low capacity today, which means minimal wait times for rides. I bought a fun card from someone off Craigslist so I have to register it at the window. The lady gets my information asking if I had a card last year. She pulls up the info and asks if my last name is Valenzuela. That’s Margot’s last name. We came here together last summer and registered our cards under her name for whatever reason. I’m reminded of that time. Feeling a little nostalgic.

...

Our lively BG crew starts out toward Apollo’s Chariot as our first choice ride. Then, The Flying Machine. Then, DaVinci’s Cradle. Then, Curse of Dark Kastle.

Unfortunately, Busch Garden’s newest rollercoaster, Verbolten, is shut down today for maintenance. We count our losses. The sky is overcast and precipitation gradually falls eventually forming enough rainfall to shut down all outdoor rides. We’re soaked and forced to head back to the cars.

...

Driving out of the park in search for dinner. We locate a calm pizza joint and dine on Cheese Pizza. Emily purchases her own large pie and eats the whole thing by herself after someone casually bet her she couldn’t. I finish eating and invite John Flowers out to the car. We have a little powwow over a few beers.

...

The rain has subsided. So we trek back to the park. With only an hour and half till it closes we manage to squeeze in as much thrill riding as possible. The Loch Ness Monster. Alpengeist. The Griffon (two times in a row). Apollo’s Chariot (three times in a row). John Flowers, my partner in crime, and I feel substantially sick now.

Grabbing some confectionaries before we exit and conclude our adventurous day with friends.

Back home.

Chic Peas. Broccoli. Carrots. Dinner Rolls.

The internet connection is being moody, so much that I have to call Cox to figure out a solution. Turns out we needed a signal boost on their end to reset the connection.

All hell breaks loose when a leak in the back of the toilet’s water well is discovered by Darren – water all over the bathroom floor. Whenever Kevin uses the restroom, by habit, he tends to slam the toilet lid up against the back. It is the general consensus that over time this is the reason for the crack. Darren of course has a perfect opportunity and example now to reprimand Kevin for being stupid and irresponsible of his actions. There’s massive yelling between the two of them. I take hold of the situation and stop the leak. Chanticleer will fix this tomorrow and everything will be okay.

Researching rollercoasters.

A youth group reunion – all my old church friends gathered in this yard next to a shopping plaza. A blurry conversation with Christy McCloud, my youth group leader. Change of scenery. Inside China Wok now. I step outside the front door and suddenly everyone disappears and everything inside the restaurant is dark. I run towards the field. In my imagination someone is chasing me and then it’s really happening. I jump up off the ground and flail my arms – gradually floating away from the problem. The person chasing me is Skippy. He barely brushes his hand on my foot as I push farther away. Finally I gain enough momentum to reach high altitudes. As if Skippy knew what I was trying to do he protests, “You’ll never make it!” But I continue getting acclimated to the sky atmosphere. Suddenly, without reason Skippy jumps with ease up to my level and reaches out to me. I fly backwards at incredible lightening speeds with him in pursuit. A vision of the clouds and stratosphere shifting past us.

Waking up on time.

Grapes. Strawberry Cereal Bar. Orange Juice.

Just another eleven-hour day in wok purgatory.

Hot-ass days – gotta love them.

Toasted Peanut Butter Sandwich. Potato Chip Trio. Honey Green Tea.

It’s pretty busy for the daytime.

Cliff Bar (Chocolate Chip Coconut). More Grapes.

The night continues.

For the last leg of my shift I’m on the phone with Kristin. We’ve been in and out of text contact throughout the day. I’m a little blindsided by some of the passive aggressiveness in her personality. Coming to some better understandings on our respective desires and needs.

Monika, the couch surfer from Poland, departed this morning and left me a note...
Robert,
You’ve been very nice. You have a wonderful time maintaining this house. Sorry we didn’t get to know each other too much. I’m leaving.
Adieu,

Giving my roommate, Elisa, a ride to work.

All day shift at China Wok.

Another hot-ass day in the hot-ass sun.

Kristin: “I thought I wanted to rush into things but you’re right taking it slow is probably best.”

Me: “a slow cooked meal is often the most flavorful and nutritious.”

Kristin: “This may be true of food but all people are different.”

Me: “you’re right and some food is better raw anyway.”

Kristin: “Some food requires more attention than others if you want the finished product to come out right.”

Me: “unless you’re a strawberry or an aloe vera plant. neglect is key. and then feast.”

Kristin: “Right.”

Me: “but you’re not either of those. you’re more like an avocado. I’m waiting till you ripen. then I’m gonna whip you up into a beautiful guacamole.”

Kristin: “That could take years.”

Me: “we’ll see now.”

Now I’m on the phone with her. Our exchange of words includes a critique into each other’s relational behavior and the question marks hover over our heads about where our connection is going.

Chit-chatting with the German couch surfers on lunch break.

Egg Sandwich with Mayonnaise and Tomato. Salt n Vinegar Chips. Honey Green Tea.

A customer hands me a twenty-dollar bill for his $14.63 order and says lackadaisically, “Merry Christmas.” I chuckle in response and thank him.

I crank up the tunes on my iPod and sing a long to old playlists. My spirits are unusually high for no reason except for the pride of life.

Kristin stops in and joins me on deliveries. Not used to the summery hot conditions in the car she says, “I have to blot my face.” She provides me with dark chocolate flavored Coconut Water that makes my day.

...

Her company is entertaining to say the least. We get into rigorous conversations about this and that and that and this. It’s exhausting at times but always turns around with humor. Her younger years growing up are damaged with religious discipline that have driven her away from any of the spiritual benefits she could have received. Anytime religion is brought up its these feelings that are talked about. Because she’s blocked out so many things related to this from her past she sometimes fears because of my church history that I’m sort of a reminder of that.

Me: “You don’t need to be religious, Kristin. I don’t require that. I just like people who are open to the truth, like searching for the truth. I can’t deal with people who live in fake realities. I don’t want to be around that.”

...

She raises a question related to Margot, “Do you miss her?”

I pause and think about an answer, “Sometimes. But not enough to just show up at her door.”

Kristin leaves to continue her day. I send her an after text, “thank you for the company and the nourishment. it really livens my wokatory [short for China Wok purgatory].”

Delivering an order in Bancroft Hall. The whole family with their burly dogs are hanging out in the yard. As I walk up with the bags in hand the little girl reacts excitedly, “It’s Chineeeese food!”

Mother scoffs, “Weirdo.”

Me: “It’s okay. I’m a weirdo too.”

The dad, “Weirdos unite!”

Me: “Yup!”

It’s the last leg of my wok-purgatory. I’ve had this Black & Mild cigar in the mid console for a long time. With a burst of inspiration I tear open the package and light it up. With my leg propped up on the seat and Wildchild’s “Renegade Master” bumping on the stereo I feel properly placed in space and time. Puffing out the tasty smoke avoiding the unfortunate fact that it’s after 10:30 and I should be off work by now. At the stoplight. No regard for others. I’m a badass image of what every delivery driver strives to be.

Off work. Back home.

Shrimp with Broccoli, Snow Peas, and Rice. Yuengling Black & Tan.

Watching Addams Family (1991).

A shootout between me and two menacing conmen. The suspense and nervousness reaches high water during this bloody scene but everything works in my favor and I’m left almost untouched. I’m the more intelligent and superior fighter.

▬ ○ ☼ ○ ▬

I’m a main character in some offshoot Narnia-inspired story. It’s understood that Aslan, The Great Lion, and I are longtime friends but haven’t seen each other since a war sprung up across the land. Just behind the perimeter walls I spot Aslan and his cavalry. He runs with incredible speed and force, hops over the walls, and pins me to the ground. It seems his aim is to kill me but maybe his motive is to just prove a point to me, to prove he has the ultimate power. There’s an unfamiliar look in his big lion eyes. I feel he may have become jaded over the years. The whole area has become flooded. Maybe a dam has broke. I climb up this smooth metallic pole. Aslan follows. We both reach the top and he’s reminded of our brotherhood but his anger still shows.

Alarm goes off at 11:11 a.m.

Instant Brown Sugar Oatmeal. Orange Juice.

Back to the grind at China Wok – working a full day shift.

Slow hot-ass day <\>

Grilled Cheese with Tomato. Five Guys French Fries. Honey Green Tea.

Talking on the phone with Kristin for a little bit while delivering a few orders. She summarizes a few highlights of the day, one of them being how she stepped in a wad of gum...

Her: “When’s the last time you stepped in somebody’s gum?”

Me: “I don’t know.”

Her: “Exactly!”

The day continues hot as ever.

A customer in Bancroft Hall comments on the tie dye t-shirt I’m wearing, “I like that shirt. It’s so 70’s.”

I can’t resist getting a Cookies n Cream Blizzard from Dairy Queen...to help me through the last leg of the shift. It’s been ages.

Off work and back home. Couch surfers, roommates, and friends hanging out downstairs.

Hot and Sour Soup. Shrimp Egg Roll. Bud Light Lime.

Fortune cookie says, “The happiest circumstances are close to home.”

I’m persuaded into eating at Rick’s Café with Darren, Devon, and Tara.

Biscuit with Butter and Strawberry Jam will suffice.

Darren dominates the conversation as usual about the fallacies he sees in our society.

After finishing up a rant he asks us, “What do you guys think I’m gonna be like in 30 years?”

Me: “I don’t think we wanna know.”

[Laughter]

Me: “Do you think we’ll still be living together in 30 years, like still sharing walls, living the way we do now? I mean, I think we would survive. It’s sustainable.”

...

I’m feeling tired and out of sync. I notice one of my China Wok regulars nearby. We recognize each other.

Back at the house.

Settling down in my room. Chatting it up with Kristin for a bit. Then to sleep around 3:30 a.m.

[i]

Waking up dark and early. It’s 5:45 a.m. I hear my mom preparing things in the kitchen – packing Jimmy’s lunch before he gets up and goes to work.

...

Mom drives me to the Orlando airport.

I’m fed a Peanut Butter Banana Wrap (my mom has fallen in love with these and professes to eat them almost everyday). Sipping on Orange Juice.

...

At the drop off curb. My mom has terribly sad eyes. She gets all emotional and says my name is such a way as if she wasn’t prepared for this.

Mom: “Aww. Robert.”

We share a warm hug, and then another, just in case we never have the chance again. My mother’s love. It’s permanently marked on my heart.

...

A surprisingly smooth transfer through security.

...

Text messages from mom...

Her: “I am missing you already [sad tear face]”

Me: “I will miss you dear mom. we need this kind of time together more than once a year.”

Her: “I love you so much...my heart is hurting right now...missing you.”

Me: “your heart shouldn’t be hurting cause I’m in it.”

In flight. I’m unfortunate to receive the middle seat between two 40-year old ladies whom are obviously best friends. Despite their chattiness in the beginning they prove to be polite by showing humorous pity to my misfortunate. I attempt to sleep here and there but nothing productive comes of it. But the Biscoff Cookie and some reading time on The Bell Jar seem more suitable.

...

Arrive in Detroit. Marching through the concourse...transferring through that same multi-colored tunnel like last time, obviously to give the effect that one is traveling through a gateway of some sort.

Egg White and Cheddar Cheese Everything Bagel. Raspberry Lemonade.

...

Waiting on the floor by the gate to board. The attractive eye candy that passes by is sometimes very distracting but I’m thankful. Beauty is to be admired everywhere.

...

I actually catch some Z’s on the flight from Detroit to Norfolk.

...

Upon arrival I’ve got 10 texts from 10 different people. Good grief. Darren pulls up in his proud 91’ Cavalier with Kevin in the passenger seat. I hop in the cramped backseat and listen to them bicker at each other, competing on who knows more than who. It’s good to be back with my posse...my boys.

Back home. Two couch surfers are already here, one named Monika, from Poland, and the other named Monica, American. But I retreat to my room for an hour nap. Feeling groggy afterwards...

...

But then Kristin shows up...perfect timing. I picked up this creepy looking doll from a Goodwill in Florida and offer it to her as a gift. She reacts expectedly, “This is creepy!” and “I wanna dress it up in goth.” She posts an Instagram photo of it online and oddly enough it turns out to be her 666th upload. !!!

...

We get dinner at Bangkok Garden.

Tofu Pad Thai with Spring Rolls, Ginger Salad, and Thai Tea. I request adding Snow Peas to the dish.

Her: “I can see you snapping the peas at China Wok,” and jokingly faux mocks my voice, “I can’t blog about this shit. It’s not interesting.

Me: “It’s really not.”

...

I make fun of her obsession with posting so many photos on Instagram, “Instagram is your crack.”

Back home. Three more couch surfers arrive for the living room sleepover party. They all take a liking to the punk house environment. One of them goes by the name of Radar, a modern bohemian hippie sort of fellow. He’s Monica’s traveling partner. He has a few stories up his sleeve. Both of them are here waiting to find out about the location for The National Rainbow Gathering (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rainbow_Gathering). The other two surfers are from Germany.

...

Kristin and I resign in my bedroom – enjoying each other’s company – canoodling and exchanging affection. She gathers herself on top of me in an all encompassing dominating manner. I love it. I surrender. We kiss. She touches me. I’m given a lengthy pleasure treatment that results in an explosive release on her hand. It’s been a while since I’ve felt such intensity in my orgasm. I’m grateful...

Me: “That was sooooo good.”

Her: “It was just a hand job.”

Me: “Yeah but you don’t understand. I just think about you being here. It’s that feeling I get off on.”

...

Afterwards, we chill out on the bed and watch a few episodes of Daria. I sip on a Spring Ale.

...

She naps while I shower and do some chores, and then takes off. Downstairs, I join the CS crew in conversation. Josiah and Devon are here too. Everyone seems to get along well together. Snacking on some Cinnamon Frosted Cake.

...

It’s after midnight. I gather everyone on a trip to The Friend’s School.

“I’m taking you guys to a magical place.”

There. We shoot hoops and play a game of Knockout. For a while now they’ve been locking up the rope swing with a pulley system. Between Radar and I, we figure out how to loosen the wires and unleash the rope. This inspires much youthful cheer amongst all.

Settling down in my room for sleep at 3:30 a.m.

☼ ○ ▬

I’m in a boat race, kind of half swimming rather than driving the boat. We cut a corner that we passed going the other direction. I remember it because of its haunting cemetery-like nature – overgrown marble structures, rusty gates, and decorative gazebos. I have to lock down where this is so I can return here another time. I turn on the GPS button to my phone so I can save the location on my map. It’s not so much a race as it is a traveling group.

Waking up just before noon.

My mom walks into the living room...

Me: “So what are we doing today?”

Mom: “I don’t know.”

Me: “Why don’t you have an itinerary planned out for me?”

Mom: “This isn’t a tour. It’s whatever you desire.”

Me: “I don’t know what to desire here in Florida.”

Mom: “Relaxation, peace, and quiet.”

We crack open a coconut we got from the market yesterday. She shows me how to hammer a screwdriver into the three holes and drain out the fresh coconut milk. Mmm...so delicious.

Peanut Butter Bagel. Mango. Coconut Milk.

Mom and I set out on the road with no real plan in mind. The sun hides behind the grey overcast but it’s still humid and hot.

...

We stop in to explore the quaint side of downtown Bartow – local independent shops and cafés. A place called Antiques on Main takes up most of our time. I’m all too consumed and fascinated with the various items of old. Flipping through old yearbooks from the 1960’s. A Duke University yearbook called Chanticleer from the 1940’s. I settle on buying a few quarterly issues of Ideals published in the 60’s and a book of new agey graphic illustrations called Dreamquests.
...
Before we leave, a man and a lady walk in with what I assume is their daughter or maybe granddaughter. For some reason she strikes my attention – her overall appearance is just plain attractive. That blue dress fits so perfectly. And her innocent face, curious eyes, and pure smile keep me stealthily at attention. I’m the persistent victim of confounding beauty in whatever form it takes, be it a pretty flower, a mother’s love, or this girl in a blue dress.

While walking along the sidewalk I spot a multitude of lizards dart across the cinder block barriers by the benches.

Me: “Mom! Look at the lizards.”

Mom: “If you sit down they’ll crawl all over you.”

...

Back on the road we pass this abandoned brick facility that looks like it used to be a warehouse for something. I make my mom stop the car so we can explore the broken down surroundings.

Enjoying a makeshift lunch

Cajun Boiled Peanuts. Peaches. Watermelon. Mini Bananas.

...

We settle down at her friend Teresa’s mobile home. Teresa pastors the church my mom attends and she acts as Teresa’s assistant as well as best friend.

...

My mom heats it up in the kitchen and cooks up an amazing dinner...

Baked Tilapia Fillets. Kale, Peppers, and Onions. Fried Green Tomatoes. Southern Sweet Tea.

Then, onto church for the Thursday night service. I was here about a year and a half ago during Christmas. And just like last time I’m called up to provide piano backing to the praise and worship songs. I haven’t played songs like this in a long time but it’s easy to follow and go with the flow. Afterwards, I sit down next to my mom. Pastor Morales steps up to the pulpit and preaches a fiery sermon. In her voice is conviction and charisma. The hollering and yelling bursts through the speakers ricocheting off the walls and piercing into our ears like a knife...

...

“YOU MAY FEEL LIKE THE BEAR IS AFTER YOU RIGHT NOW. YOU MAY FEEL LIKE YOU’RE GOING THROUGH SOMETHING THAT AIN’T SO HAPPY, LIKE TONS OF BRICKS HAVE FALLEN ON YOU, BUT YOU’RE IN PREPARATION SEASON. YOU’RE IN THE FIRST ANOINTING AND GOD IS ABOUT TO PROMOTE YOU!”

...

“OOOOH! I DON’T KNOW ABOUT YOU BUT THERE’S A LOT OF PEOPLE CALLING THEMSELVES CHRISTIANS AND THEY AIN’T ACTING RIGHT! IT’S JUST A NAME NOW. THE DEVIL HIMSELF IS A CHRISTIAN NOWADAYS!”

...

“YOU’RE NOT IN THE WILDERNESS. GOD IS ABOUT TO TAKE YOU OUT. GOD IS ABOUT TO GIVE YOU A SPIRITUAL PROMOTION!”

...

“THE BIBLE SAYS THAT THERE IS POWER IN YOUR TONGUE FOR LIFE OR DEATH!”

...

“YOU HAVE TO BE BROKEN. YOU HAVE TO BE WILLING TO LET GO!”

...

“DELIGHT YOURSELF IN THE LORD AND HE WILL GIVE YOU? SAY IT!”

The congregation answers in unison, “The desires of your heart.”

“THE DESIRES, NOT OF THE FLESH, OF THE SPIRIT.”

...

“I WAS IN THE WILDERNESS TOO LONG! I AM COMING OUT AND I AIN’T GOING BACK! TODAY WE ARE MORE THAN CONQUERORS! YOU WILL WALK IN THE ANOINTING THAT GOD HAS CALLED YOU!”

...

“MY ANOINTING AIN’T ANYONE ELSE’S ANOINTING. I GOTTA WALK IN MY OWN. I GOTTA LOOK FOR MINE. THE BIBLE SAYS THAT SALVATION IS INDIVIDUAL.”

...

I’m called up again to direct the mood for the conclusion of the service. I vamp on a contemporary pop progression that comes to mind (Am-C-F-G-Am) while the singers improv into the microphones. People lifting their hands up to the ceiling – shouting – praying – declaring spiritual revelations. While tinkering on the keyboard I observe my mother with her hands outstretched over someone’s back. She’s lost in God – speaking in tongues.

...

The service is over and I wait out in the car. My mom hops in. She rolls down the window for Paulina, this little charismatic Tanzanian women. She looks over in my direction and thanks me for playing. She’s completely exuberant in her way of talking, her thick Tanzanian accent adding flavor to her words...

Paulina: “You gotta get the right people to flow from the well that’s flowing out of you.”

...

On the drive back to the house.

Mom: “How did you feel up there?”

Me: “What do you mean?”

Mom: “How did you feel? You brought everyone into worship...”

Me: “I was doing my job I guess.”

Back home.

Eating a bowl of Oh’s with Milk.

Helping my mom construct a document on Microsoft Word.

We share a few warm goodnight hugs. Tomorrow we have to get up super early for me to catch my flight.

She frowns in a cute way and asks, “Why can’t you just stay?”

Me: “I have a life up there.”

Mom: “But you can have a life here.”

Sleep 2:30 a.m.
