☼ ○ ▬

Hanging out with Beck in a newly acquired apartment. He owns a huge collection of books upon stacks of books—bookshelves everywhere. I open up a desk drawer where I put all my cash money from the workday—trying to count it. Beck is making a pizza from scratch in the kitchen.

▬ ○ ☼

Waking up just before 1 p.m.

Oat Flakes and Berry Cobbler Granola with Almond Milk.

General chores. Repotting plants.

Double Egg Sandwich with Mayo and Tomato. Banana. Homemade Kombucha Tea (from Will).

At the Rec Center playing some 1-on-1 and 21. I was scheduled to work a part-time shift at China Wok but after calling my bosses they didn't seem to need me. So I chill at the Rec and play some full court games for adult basketball.

Navel Orange. Baked Salt n Vinegar Chips.

Leftover Lentils, Brussel Sprouts, Onions, and Quinoa. Reed's Ginger Ale.

I've got a date with Elliott tonight. We ride bikes up and down the boardwalk—taking it all the way up to 82nd Street. It's been a while since we've hung out so we have a lot to catch up on – the latest and greatest on ideas, ambitions, friend news, etc.

Stopping by Bella Pizza for a few slices.

I head home a little before midnight. When I arrive I see a familiar long-haired face in front of the house...Anthony. I didn't have the opportunity for an official welcome home hug until now. There're a lot of people here meddling around in the dining room: James Graves, Kevin, Aj, Richie, and Jessica. Anthony's frenetic spirit hasn't weakened one bit. He's still acting like a puppy dog or a jester running around and getting everyone riled up. He looks somewhat thinner in the face since I last saw him, which would've been less than a year ago. There's a lot of excitement about a possible new travel/film project between him and Skippy where they'd all take a year long road trip across America and Ed Harris would provide all the camera equipment needed. Whenever Anthony's around there's no lack of that electric 20-something spirit.

Anthony barges into my room throughout the night while I catch up on writing and reading. He sprawls out onto my bed and insinuates he'll be sleeping here tonight.

He assures me, "Don't worry. I'll leave the room when you need to masturbate. Discretion is the better part of valor my friend. I'll just sleep on the floor over there."

...

He starts off asking about Ana, the new important person/partner in my life—then, asking about Phil Gray and what he's doing—then quoting something he read the other day..."People only value the internet as much as the internet makes them important………And if you have a whole separate life on the internet that has promoted you and over valued you or has highlighted you in a specific way that in real life you don't have then you will value it that much. But if you're someone who in no way is serviced by the internet then you're just like ah well whatever it's the fucking internet. But then to me the quote was a little empty cause I thought well that's true of anything. I value anything that helps make me feel like I've got a bigger sense of self-worth."

I missed Anthony and his high-strung critical energy.

"Here's what bothers me: For, let's say, a hundred and twenty thousand years if someone had an image of a train in their head it was because they'd actually seen that train and now for the past hundred years...if I asked you to think about a baseball game, or I asked you to think about a kiss under the bleachers, or I asked you to think about a summer sunset some of your first images in your head without you even realizing it would be TV/movies. And for 99% of human existence up until the past century that was never the case—there were actual things that you experienced so now all of a sudden these images aren't ours! For some reason these images that we've never really experienced have replaced the images that we have because they're so pervasive and it freaks me the fuck out! If someone asks you to remember things and you give TV and movies more than you give your own life...you gotta take a step back at that point—I think that that can't be healthy to a degree, man. This is the first time in life, in civilization when we are less human than we've ever been. There is such a disconnect between actual experiences and simulated communal experiences in a virtual world—we've created a whole simulated world online. People have never been able to handle anything healthily—people have never been able to do things in moderation. With TV...do they just watch a little bit of it and reap the benefits of it? No! They fucking sat there for thirty fucking hours and turned into fucking zombies. With even radio! And sometimes I think when books first came out I bet you there was a vocal minority who was like you're getting taking out what's really happening right here, right now and you're going to some place that doesn't exist. It's not a question of what's evil and what's good. It's just crazy—we're always trying to get out of the right here and the right now, which is nothing new. And it's accelerating because of technology. How much does real technology play in our evolution as human beings...and that scares the shit out of me...because it shouldn't."

Me: "Technology is designed to shave off seconds and minutes from our lives."

Anthony: "And it becomes a question in me, the age old Kurt Vonnegut thing: what do you do with that time? Someone who says they don't watch TV and they spend four hours on Facebook or Tumblr and they think that it's not like as bad. It's the same exact thing."

Me: "Well, it's all about choosing what to do with your time—being wise with your time. That's the real problem."

Anthony: "And there's no way you can think that forty years from now people are gonna wanna wait even ten seconds for anything."

Me: "For example, even look at reading articles online—they're always really short—they're always like three paragraphs long."

Anthony: "Of course they are. Because they know your attention span."

Me: "You're going through it and you're like alright I'm done with that. Oh what's next? Oh what's next? And there's always another article to read. And you never retain that information."

Anthony: "Not at all."

Me: "And when you read a book—you're spending a lot of time with that book so you retain the information."

At some point we finalize our thoughts on the future of society and he leaves the room.

Waking up just before 12:30 p.m.

Honey Flakes, Oat Clusters, and Granola with Vanilla Almond Milk.

Shopping for groceries.

Falafel Wrap with Hummus, Tomatoes, and Kale. Black Tea with Honey. Banana. Navel Orange.

Cleaning the downstairs bathroom thoroughly and half of the upstairs bathroom.

Baked Salt n Vinegar Chips.

Ana meets up with me and we go to The Escape for a good one-hour workout. Then, to the basketball courts off First Colonial. While she runs on the track field I play a few games of 3-on-3 with some ball players.

Back at the house. I cook us dinner: Mojito Salmon with Baby Broccoli, Carrots, and Brown Rice. Kevin and Will join us at the table, Will with his Williamsburg White Ales and Kevin with his PBR's. Ana and I sip on Bubbly Elderberry Lemonades. It's Movie Monday but it's just the four of us. We decide on Death Race 2000, the original 1975 cult classic with Sylvester Stallone and David Carridine.

Sharing fresh Mango.

Later on, Ana and I are hanging out upstairs. It's been a while since we've made love and I'm kind of horny. We play around on the floor but for some reason after getting revved up I go limp. It may have something to do with it being the end of her period—before I could really connect it required a second step of preparation. Anytime there's a pause in the process I kind of lose it. This leads to some unsettling conversations about birth control. She's been on the pill for the past three months but it wasn't making her feel good physically and emotionally. After a while I recommend we go for a walk.

...

It's two in the morning. We stroll down the sidewalk of the neighborhood—I apologize if I sounded insensitive—she apologizes for building invisible walls. We pass by a lone bird in a tree singing various melodies, like a medley of different whistle styles from jazz to pop to blues to hip-hop. It just sounds so funny.

Me: "I've never heard a bird do that before. It's like he's trying to find his voice."

Ana: "He's really enjoying himself.

Me: "He's practicing for his gig in the morning."

...

Back in the bedroom trying to stay cool from all this heat. She brings up the fact that I keep all her things safe.

Ana: "You've got my CD's. You've got my spare key. You're like a safe storage!"

Me: "Don't get robbed. Get a Rob storage unit!"

Ana and Her Mother (May 11 2014)[i]

At about 5 in the morning I hear some clanging and mischief in the hallway. I was told Anthony was back in town and was having a fireworks gathering at the beach. I would have joined them at the beach but I was terribly beat from the workday. I can only suspect those chuckles I hear in the hallway are Anthony's. I pay no mind cause I'm so tired.

Later I wake up at 11:15 a.m. In the hallway I find almost all of the pictures, signs, and artwork have been ripped off the walls. I don't have time to repair or really react. This is really immature. But later I send a text to any possible culprits (Josh and Anthony): "Dear Demolition Crew, thank you for tearing everything down from the hallway walls. I really appreciate the respect."

Josh responds, "That didn't take a crew—Anthony took care of that like I figured he would. My days of house destroying are behind me."

Me: "Yeah we all have to grow up eventually."

Josh: "Except Peter Panthony!"

Wheat Flakes and Granola with Vanilla Almond Milk.

All day shift at China Wok.

Anthony apologizes a little later, "My sincerest apologies for my involvement in the disrespectful destruction. You deserve better than that because you give better than that. I personally will not create any more messes for you to clean up while I am in town."

Ana and her mother stop by. They both look sparkling and fitting together.

Kale Salad with Tomatoes and Hard Boiled Egg. Baked Salt n Vinegar Chips. Green Tea with Honey. Almond Cookie (via Ana).

It's a fairly steady day, nothing too overwhelming. Listening to podcasts as I drive around the city.

China Wok Girls (May 9 2014)[i]

At 10:45 a.m. on the dot I wake up. But I realize no alarm went off cause I forgot to set it last night. Despite I fall back to sleep and reawaken with only ten minutes to leave.

All day shift at China Wok.

Grapefruit.

When I find the right time I pour myself a bowl of Honey Flakes, Oat Clusters, and Granola with Vanilla Almond Milk.

While communicating in a group message on Facebook with people trying to plan a Kings Dominion trip the little girls take notice to the picture of roller coasters so I scroll through photos and stream videos of POV shots of thrill rides. They oo and ah at all the steep drops.

It's extremely slow for business at the restaurant, so slow that Ling comes out from the kitchen to throw the ball around with the girls.

After Dinner (May 8 2014)[i]

Waking up at 12:37 p.m.

Honey Corn Flakes, Oat Clusters, and Granola with Vanilla Almond Milk.

I'm scheduled to work tonight so I head to the gym earlier than usual. On the drive there it's recognizably one of the hottest days we've had this season – summer is upon us. While waiting at a stoplight with the window down I overhear two girls talking in the car beside me. One of them says, "Oo. I like his purple car."

The other girl adds, "That's the China Wok car."

It's funny how my car has such a reputation that even without the China Wok signs people can identify it as the "China Wok" car.

...

At the Rec – lifting and playing a few pick-up games of basketball. My legs and feet are sore from all the activity this week.

Banana. Mango and Strawberries. Peanut Butter English Muffin. Baked Salt n Vinegar Chips. Green Tea with Honey.

Working a few hours at China Wok.

Back home. Ana arrives after spending some time at the gym. I fix up dinner. Tonight is Ginger Lentils with Quinoa, Brussel Sprouts, and Onions. Washing it down with these Elderberry Lemonade drinks I found at Whole Foods.

We work on a new Johnny Cash/Bob Dylan song – a great feel-good tune.

Ana and I didn't decide on what to do tonight besides dinner, which is always a given, and playing music. There's not much time left in the night so we preoccupy ourselves in the bed with general playful behavior – pinching each other's legs and slapping each other's butts.

Sleep around 3:30 a.m.

☼ ○ ▬

There's a misunderstanding about a cell phone that got stolen. I'm being convicted of the crime along with two other people – we were set up. Time to go. We run. At the entrance there's a menacing guard dog. I run up the stairs to avoid danger. The dog follows. I jump up and grab hold of a bar on the ceiling. I discover cactus spines in my left knee. While hanging there I pull them out one by one. The dog turns friendly after a while. We chase each other down the stairs. I catch up with the other two buddies of mine by the gate. We creep out to find our cars but just as soon as we notice the cars they disappear out of thin air. We run across the street and up a muddy hill. The officers of the prison are in sight behind us flashing lights in our direction. I find a trail leading us along a river. It's very serene and relaxing. But we still have to hurry. An EMS suburban is parked up ahead at the end of the trail. People get out that suspiciously look like cops but maybe they're only the paramedics. Some of them have nightsticks and look like they're about to arrest us. I act confused and say, "Hello? We're just hiking the trail here. It's very beautiful out here isn't it?" Somehow the act works and they leave us alone. Our trio continues on and rushes into a Kroger...

At the Rec Center for adult basketball – there's not a lot of players today so that means more games to participate in. My skills don't shine until the last one where I shoot 60% of the points bringing us a victory. Meanwhile, Ana is in the weight room doing her thing. She left me a handwritten note in my locker that says, "You are the sunshine of my life." I smile really hard after reading it.

Ana Ballin' (May 5 2014) (1)[i]

Waking up at 1:19 p.m.

Coffee. Instant Mixed Berry Oatmeal.

Errands. After depositing money in the bank I drive into the Whole Foods parking lot to find Darren and Josh socializing on the patio. "Are you serious right now?!" I hear one of them exclaim. I link up with them – Darren uses his 20% employee discount to buy some things for me. Then to Kroger. Darren and I argue in the line about how to pronounce the word "culinary". The nice lady behind the cash register seems to enjoy our bickering. Then to Trader Joe's. More camaraderie with familiar faces. I joke to Darren on the way out about the community in Hilltop.

Banana. Peanut Butter English Muffin. Salt n Vinegar Chips. Green Tea with Honey.

Driving to the Princess Anne Rec only to discover the gym will be closed until May 18th. But I also discover Aaron Lachman working behind the counter. I can't remember the last time we saw each other. We catch up briefly – eventually he'll be going into the category of old friends who are married before me.

...

I count my losses and resign at the Seatack Rec to play basketball. There's a lot of kids here. One of my balling buddies shows up and we start a big game of 21 with the young ones – it almost feels like we're running an after-school program. Ana shows up a little later. One of the boys challenges me to a one-on-one match – I pass it over to Ana...

Back at the house. I cook up Black Bean Tacos with Tomatoes, Cilantro, and Vegan Cheese for Ana and I. Ken, Will, and Darren are here for Movie Night. We're showing Lars Von Trier's Nymph()maniac: Vol. 1 (2013). Provocative and highly erotic is what we all expected (profound and ridiculous would also be good word choices) but it sparks some great discussion afterwards about addiction and the negative effects of sensationalism.

...

Ana already retreated to the bed when the movie was over. When I finish up conversations with the boys I join Ana in the bed – lying on my side with my arm propping up my head. I listen to her thoughts on the film and on various things. She asks one of those scary questions like, "What do you dislike about me?" There are character traits in her that I wouldn't necessarily identify as not liking – they're entertaining to say the least and add a bit of spice and spunk to the relationship. In the end I clarify that, "I like who you are. Don't change."

Sleep at some point.

Gouged Eye.[i]

A little early morning sex before Ana departs for work.

Waking up officially at 11:47 a.m. Gotta be at work by noon. I'm late.

Oat Flakes and Berry Cobbler Granola with Almond Milk. Grapefruit.

All day shift at China Wok.

It's a typically steady Sunday for the Chinese food industry.

Egg Drop Soup. Banana. Baked Salt n Vinegar Chips. Green Tea with Honey.

Ana shows up after working a shift at the bakery. She accompanies me for a few hours in "the wok wagon" as she affectionately calls it. Busting out some old school Pixies songs and Smashing Pumpkins songs on the stereo.

She's got on this attractive mustard colored shirt and form fitting black pants. I can't resist putting my hand on her legs while I'm driving and squeezing them.

Me: "Mm! I just wanna slice your thighs up and dip them in chocolate sauce."

Skipp dropped off some goodies to the house but it's mostly generic food items with a list of ingredients about a paragraph long. Ana has a tiny bag of blueberry cornbread that I wanted to taste. She complains how difficult it is to be around sweet things and resist eating them. I grab the cornbread bag, toss it out the window, and say, "If your right eye causes you to sin, gouge it out."

At some point Ana departs from wok life.

Chocolate Peanut Butter Granola Bars.

Off work and back home at a decent hour.

Mongolian Chicken with Mixed Vegetables. Sipping on a Leinenkugel's Summer Shandy and watching Gladiator (2000).

Ana messages me...
"Remember when we met up at your house last night, so you could grab your music equipment for your show?? I really liked how you called me your other half. It gave me warm tingles just hearing that."

Taking care of a few chores – locating all the lost drinking glasses in Kevin's room and in the living room. Meanwhile, Darren is sharing all his thoughts and ideas about various political dilemmas to Jessica and a guy friend of hers.

Musicplayer at Tapped (Ana and I) (May 3 2014)[i]

Waking up at 10:45 a.m.

Oat Flakes and Berry Cobbler Granola with Almond Milk.

All day shift at China Wok.

It's been two hours and not one delivery order has come through. I take advantage of the time to return a watermelon to Whole Foods and fill up my water jugs.

Two Hard Boiled Eggs (minus one yolk). Baked Salt n Vinegar Chips. Green Tea with Honey.

The day goes by slowly – entertaining myself with talk radio and Pixies songs.

Chocolate Peanut Butter Granola Bars.

Apple.

Around 10 o'clock I convince the China bosses to let me off work early so I can make the Musicplayer gig at Tapped across the street. I snag one last delivery and gobble down a container of Vegetable Lo Mein for dinner.

At Tapped. Mike Gombas and Chris Kendrick have been singing since 9. Mike Farley, a recently acquired piano student of mine shows up. Along with him, most of the gang is here (Darren, Kevin, Ana, Leisa, Stef, and a few others). I sip on two delicious Blue Moons throughout the night. I feel satisfied with my performance besides the fact that my voice was weakening towards the end of the set. Kevin wails on the violin for the song, "Dopamotive". And Ana accompanies me with her endearing voice. We have a little trouble at first when singing the Everly Brothers song but "You Are My Sunshine" and "Lovefool" deserve an A+.

After about 1:30 a.m. Ana and I arrive home. We settle down in the bedroom – after I spend some time taking care of the usual things I take care of after work we lie down. I recall her saying, "I want you, later" at the bar. After plopping down on the bed and feeling the surge of relaxation take over I whisper to her, "Let's get some rest and when you wake up in the morning you can bang me."

Oat Flakes and Berry Cobbler Granola with Almond Milk.

All day shift at China Wok.

Grapefruit.

Banana. Two Hard Boiled Eggs. Baked Salt n Vinegar Chips. Green Tea with Honey.

It's just another day at the Wok – sweeping the floors, bagging the noodles, prepping the bags, stocking the drinks, etc. Driving. Driving. Driving.

Chocolate Peanut Butter Granola Bars.

Everything Pretzel Thins.

Towards the end of the night Ana accompanies me on my deliveries. She eats her favorite dish: orange tofu with mixed vegetables. Talking about how my hunger right now isn't unbearable. Usually the nights I have to work late is when the stinging starving sensation becomes too much. I jinx myself by even talking about it because tonight becomes one of those nights that never seem to end. And of course Ling is cashing me out and that's always a production. I don't wanna be here! I don't wanna be here! I don't wanna be here!

I arrive home from work finally after almost 12 hours on the job. Ana left her phone in my car and I act a little impatient about it but I rise to my duty despite and walk back out to the car to retrieve. She senses my irritation. I hand over the phone and say, "I love you," in hopes to soften her and myself up. She responds with an expressionless, "Thanks." Later we exchange a few messages of understanding.

Meanwhile, downstairs I hear the hoots and hollers from Darren, Kevin, Josh, and Richie getting drunk. That is the last thing I need to be around right now. I just don't have the need to release that kind of pent up angst. I'm grateful to have my room, which serves as a panic room so to speak from the outside world.

It's CRAFTS ~&~ ARTS tonight. In the dining room we've set up markers, paints, pizza boxes, etc. spread out across two tables. Josh and Darren are gulping down shots of vodka and rum. Mixed drinks are passed around. It's loud. They've got the stereo cranked to the highest possible volume. It's supposed to be arts and crafts night not get drunk and obnoxious night. Despite, people manage to create some things...

General chores – vacuuming the living room, stairs, and hallway.

Peanut Butter Bagel. Baked Salt n Vinegar Chips. Sparkling Clementine Izze.

Meeting up at The Naro for the 7 p.m. showing of Under the Skin (2014). Sitting with Ana, Ken, Leisa, and Andre. I'll quote a review I read online: "visually stunning and deeply disturbing: very freaky, very scary and very erotic." When we were finally greeted by the credits I figured it was time to breathe – I didn't even realize I had been holding my breath the whole time (or at least it seemed I was). It also had the kind of haunting soundtrack that sticks in your head long after you leave the theater.

Afterwards, we stop by The Cure coffee shop to say hi to James Graves who's working a shift.

"I feel like I haven't seen you in a long time," I say to James.

Ana chimes in, "I agree."

James: "You agree that Robert hasn't seen me in a long time?"

[insert laughter]

...

Then to Tortilla West for dinner. Three Black Bean Tacos and a side of Garlic Sautéed Spinach. I notice a slight rudeness from Ana while we were dining. She did mention she barely ate anything today besides a cookie and a couple espressos. When driving her back to her car we get the chance to reflect. I park in a lot near Colley Avenue...

Ana: "Well I know that it's partly lack of sleep because lack of sleep makes you grumpy and just not think correctly – I just know that not having any sleep is bad for you."

Me: "Yeah of course. That's true. So...what else? You have other insights?"

Ana: "I just feel like the more we hang out the more I don't think that we should be together. I think that you could find somebody more suitable for you."

She tends to have these kinds of thoughts when under stress so I don't take these statements seriously – only half seriously.

Me: "Oh c'mon. Really? You're gonna say this to me right now?"

...

Ana: "Maybe it's just me adjusting to you."

Me: "I think you're all over the place right now."

As the rain falls on top of the car tapping on the windshield in a hypnotic rhythm, it feels like a scene from the movie we just watched – hideously beautiful. I stare at her face where the reflection of the rain droplets appears creating a mask.

Rain Droplet Face (April 28 2014) (2)

Me: "Is the rain too loud?"

Ana: "No I like the sound of rain as long as I'm not in it. It's kind of relaxing."

...

Ana: "I feel like the only reason you care about me is because we spend time together and stuff."

Me: "How do you think love works? That's how it works – you spend time with somebody and you develop affections for them and you care for them. It's about getting to know each other."

Ana: "I can't even – I can't even think – I wanna go to sleep."

Me: "Yeah you're just delirious."

...

Me: "I think you're just afraid. You saying, I don't think we should be together – that's something someone would say when they're afraid. And I don't know why you're afraid."

Ana: "I'm just afraid what I did to someone, you're gonna do to me – I just left them."

Me: "So you're afraid of me leaving you."

Ana: "I've never been left before. I'm the one who left before."

Me: "Alright. I'll make a deal with you: I will never choose to leave you. Only you can choose to leave me."

Ana: "That's horrible. That is a horrible deal!"

Me: "That way you're secure – you don't have to be afraid of me leaving you."

I chuckle.

Ana: "That's so silly. Because it's not [secure] It doesn't matter what anyone says. I always feel like everything changes."

Me: "Yeah. Everything is seasonal. You think that's true?"

...

After some lighthearted philosophical talk about relationships and the movie I ask outright, "Would you be interested in kissing me right now?"

She just laughs. And then we kiss with a fresh romantic energy.

Ana: "I think I know why I don't feel close to you."

Me: "Why? Because you don't kiss me enough?"

Later, back home. Sipping on Tea and Orange Juice.

Darren Judging the Tourists (April 27 2014)[i]

Waking up at 12:36 p.m.

Wheat Flakes and Berry Cobbler Granola with Almond Milk.

Darren and Richie are loitering downstairs. My project today is to install a new shelf above the kitchen sink. Before I've been using shower rods to hold up pieces of board but every few months or so they just fall. Darren gives me a hand using his craftsman knowledge.

Darren keeps bugging me about taking a bike ride to the oceanfront. It's bright and sunny but with a chilly breeze constantly bombarding our direction. We gobble down Bananas then ride up to La Dolce Vita Bakery where Ana is working. She's surprised to see us. I hand her a banana and say, "This isn't a banana in my hand. I'm just happy to see you." We grab some Iced Coffees and continue on the bike path on the boardwalk. After reaching the fishing pier near 15th I pause in reflection and explain to Darren some of the memories I have working at the ice cream shop that used to be here.

Me: "This is where it all began. This is where I met Margot. She used to work here with me and her mom worked across the way at Ocean Eddie's."

Somewhere on the ride back Darren realizes his glasses fell out of his pocket. He's on a time constraint and has work at 4 so I volunteer to retrace our tracks and look for them. No luck.

Attack the Matrix (April 27 2014)

During my search I found a notebook dried out from the rain sitting purposefully underneath graffiti that reads "ATTACK THE MATRIX". I meet up with Ana outside the bakery and skim through the writing. The handwriting belongs to a guy named Rich – it seems to be a combination of notes from sessions in a class about Christian Psychotherapy taught by a Dr. Kent Heintzelman (http://www.christianpsychotherapy.com/StaffFiles/KHeintzelman1.html) and other personal notes. Some quotes are as follows:

"No sex, why? Only thing to focus on right now is recovery from alcohol, no distractions.
We are all survivors of the great shipwreck of life.
If someone is an irritant, make friends, learn something from that person.
My mind is wandering
Important point in recovery...

Hi Gail,
I hope this letter finds you happy and well. I wish want to take this time moment to apologize to you for my self centeredness that ended contributed to our breakup. I have come to see that I was neglected my responsibilities as a husband and your emotional and spiritual needs in particular.
I am sincerely sorry and pray that one day you will find forgiveness. I want the best for you.

Back at the house with Ana. I fix us up a wholesome lunch: Eggs, French Batard Bread, Arugula Salad with Tomatoes, Chips and Salsa, and Mango.

I take us to the basketball courts by Lynnhaven Middle School. Been a while since I've played out here. There're a few other players shooting around. I play a few 2-on-2 games with them while Ana walks the track field.

Back at the house with Ana. Sharing OJ then preparing dinner. The whole house family (Josh, Darren, and Devon) is gathered at the dining room table (minus Kevin). While Ana and I eat Shrimp Stir Fry with Mixed Vegetables and Rice, the others are having a failed attempt at a oyster and champagne night which consists of the cheapest TJ's bottles and one small container of canned oysters. Ana and I socialize for a while and then retreat to the bedroom.

Singing songs together then settling down in the bed to watch The United States of Leland (2002).

Me: "You're so adorable. You always look like you're just waiting to be cuddled with."

Sleep at some late hour.

George Myers.[i]

Waking up at 10:50 a.m.

Wheat Flakes and Berry Cobbler Granola with room temp Almond Milk (cause I forgot to put one in the fridge the night before).

All day shift at China Wok.

Banana.

Mixed Nuts and Raisins. Egg Drop Soup. Baked Salt n Vinegar Chips. Sparkling Clementine Izze.

It's a frantic dinner rush. Lucky for me we're not getting a thousand orders to the oceanfront. Cause this weekend is College Weekend where all the juvenile young adults take over the beach streets. The cops are literally on every corner. Motorcycle cops are pulling people over right and left on 264.

It's 11 p.m. Just when I think I'll be able to cash out and write in a period to this never-ending day, I come back to the restaurant to find one more order. Ling and Ming are busy doing all sorts of things in the kitchen. I just don't understand. Their behavior is unpredictable. I snag the order and drive off. I'm upset to be working later than usual. To be honest if I had already eaten dinner I wouldn't be so cranky.

I yell out in the car, "At some fucking point this day has to end. This day needs to CON-CLUDE!"

And it does sooner or later...

Back home.

Just before 7 a.m. my beautiful adorable girl instigates morning sex. Then she's off to work and I'm back to sleep.

Waking up a little late for work at 11:13 a.m.

Wheat Flakes and Berry Cobbler Granola with Almond Milk. Tangelo.

All day shift at China Wok.

It's slow in the afternoon but I keep myself busy bagging the fried noodles, stocking the sodas, and washing off the pollen from the windows.

Egg Drop Soup with Fried Noodles.

Peanut Butter Bagel. Sparkling Clementine Izze. Milk Chocolate

Around dinner time business picks up dramatically. A storm is brewing from afar. The sky cracks open to a big rain. Thunder and lightening flashes in the distance. The streets start to flood. My windshield fogs up. I forgot my raincoat so I improvise by carrying a towel over my head. This bad weather only encourages people to call in with orders. It's non-stop.

When the clock strikes 11 p.m. all is settled. Cecily cashes me out quickly. I walk to the back to place my usual dinner request – they always cook me a meal at the end of the day. But to my dismay Ling and Ming refuse to cook anything else – they're just standing there chomping on McDonald's burgers (I've never seen them eat fast food before). "We no more cook." I'm very disappointed and slightly insulted because I drive all day long and the biggest thing I look forward to is a fresh hot steamy serving of Chinese food. I plan this into my meals. I don't plan to cook nor do I have the time to cook. All I want to do is relax after 11 hours of work. But I understand where they're coming from as they've been slaving away over the hot woks all day and they have to close the kitchen at some point. At any rate, I grab some unwanted Fried Chicken and an Egg Roll from a messed up order and head home. I throw the chicken together with some Arugula and Tomatoes and voila! Tummy happy.

Sleep at some semi-late hour.

I discover a secret cave near a waterfall in the forest. Exploring the inside – it appears somebody already made themselves a home here. There's a bookshelf, a lamp, and a few chairs. This cave seems too fresh and lived in. It pops in my head that there should be a secret door behind one of the desks. I'm right. As I move the desk away the lamp flickers on. There's a crawl space that leads to a stairs. A single black family is living up there. I assure the man of the house I won't tell anyone – they must be hiding for a reason. Later on, travelers appear – more and more people show up to check out this cave. I left the secret doorway open on accident. I whisper to a news reporter, "They live here. It's a secret. If too many people find out it could be bad. The state owns this forest so they could kick them out."

Waking up at 1:15 p.m.

Wheat Flakes and Berry Cobbler Granola with Almond Milk. Mango.

Errands. After dropping off a letter in the mailbox I decide to browse in the thrift store for a little bit. In my opinion there's an uncomfortable amount of people in here today. I start to get irritated but I make sure not to show it. I spend most of my time just waiting for others to pass through the aisles. Later on at Trader Joe's and Whole Foods I experience the same feeling of claustrophobia. I don’t know if it's just the fact that I'm shopping at rush hour or if I'm extra sensitive to crowds today.

Sesame Bagel with Vegan Cream Cheese. Tortilla Chips with Guacamole.

Work at China Wok for a few hours. It's busier than Tuesday when I only delivered four orders in two hours. Tonight it's eleven orders in two and half hours.

Ana just finished working out at the gym and rides in the passenger seat on my last delivery. When I drop her off at the car she's suddenly lost the whereabouts of her keys. She swipes her hand over the seat and checks the floor becoming slightly stressed.

"Did you check your pockets?" I ask.

I reach my hand in her left pocket and there they magically were. Embarrassed, she tries to avoid my giddy embrace but I reach my arms around her and say, "You are so adorable. I love you."

Back at the house. Ana meets me here. Everyone's hanging out downstairs while I cook up a meal for Ana and I: Honey Beer Glazed Black Beans with Onions, Red Peppers, Brussel Sprouts, Carrots, and a Black Rice-Jasmine Rice mixture.

...

Afterwards, we rehearse a few songs in my room. Then attempt to make a recipe she found online. The recipe called for 2 tsp of rum essence but Ana saw 3 tbsp of rum and we realize this is the culprit – a fair mistake on her part. We basically tripled the amount of rum essence we were supposed to use. I try my best to sweeten it up and get rid of the strong rum flavor but we eventually call it quits. I seal the mix in a plastic bag with plans to fix it another time.

Waking up at 12:40 p.m.

Wheat Flakes and Berry Cobbler Granola with Almond Milk.

Basketball shoe shopping online.

Peanut Butter Bagel. Salt n Vinegar Chips. Navel Orange. Black Tea with Honey.

At the Princess Anne Rec Center for adult basketball. I run into a fellow baller outside before the games. Ash is his name. He's one of the older players, about 37 years old. We don't usually converse but he decides to introduce himself this time.

Ash: "Hey you got a hot girlfriend, man."

Me: "Heh-heh. Thanks. She's a good one. We've been together for about a year now."

He compliments my game play from last time and we talk about how important it is to just keep playing no matter what cause that's how you improve.

"I was garbage when I first started," he says.

...

Inside, I don't feel satisfied with my game tonight – one of the guys on my team keeps harping on me over every little mishap. But there's always comedy relief with that infamous scrawny white boy, Steven, who never fails to shout out "KO-BE, baby! KO-BE!" after every shot he makes.

Back home.

Watermelon.

Leftover Barbecue Garlic Salmon with Brussel Sprouts, Carrots, and Rice.

Meeting with Leisa at Rick's Café to shoot the first scene of the short film I'm making. Using my phone camera we knock out a good six takes.

From Alien Worlds.[i]

At some odd early hour just before the sun is rising I feel a pleasurable touch from my bedmate. Sometimes I wake up in the middle of the night with a hard-on – I guess Ana noticed it and took advantage. It feels beautiful to be inside her at daybreak.

Waking up at 11 a.m.

Wheat Flakes and Maple Granola with Almond Milk.

I drive over to Mike Farley's house off Silina – he's a new piano student of mine, first lesson. He's a 37-year-old family man – he contacted me from a lessons website I set up a few months ago. I'm happy to be teaching again. He's got a quiet and peppy dog hopping around vying for attention. For the pilot lesson I teach him basic fingering patterns for the major scales.

Navel Orange.

Scrambled Egg. Bagel with Vegan Cream Cheese. Baked Salt n Vinegar Chips. Green Tea with Honey.

At the Rec Center – working out – practicing basketball.

There's a box made of old wooden planks – it's filled with dried soil and what's understood to be the ashes of an old woman who died over a century ago. The story is she was buried alive – her arms and legs tied to the edge of the box with thick strings. I'm with a few others who encourage me to cut the string so that her soul can be freed. I don't know why we unearthed the coffin to begin with. The whole situation is eerie. I try to cut the string with a pair of scissors – it's difficult. There's a heaviness in the air and I'm scared. I tell the others, "I'm afraid! I'm afraid! I can't do this." Somehow I manage to loosen all the strings attached to the box and voila, the soul is freed.

Waking up around 11 a.m.

Wheat Flakes and Blueberry Muesli with Almond Milk.

All day shift at China Wok.

Five Guys French Fries with Ketchup (it's been a while). Green Tea with Honey.

It's a slow one today, not unusual for a Monday.

Apple. Almond Granola Bar.

Just getting through the evening...until it's over.

Off work and back home. Darren and Devon are a tad bit high attempting to dance to salsa music.

Baby Broccoli, Carrots, and Mushroom Mochi.

It's Movie Night. Will comes bearing gifts of homemade Kombucha. Ana shares the Banana Cream Pie she slaved over the night before. It's an absolute hit.

Me: "This is seriously delicious. I could see your bakery selling this."

Ana's Banana Cream Pie (April 21 2014)

Tonight's presentation: Alejandro Jodorowsky's The Holy Mountain (1973). Two hours of symbolic surrealistic visual overload. It's like watching a series of paintings come to life.

Ana in Elevator (April 20 2014)[i]

Waking up at 11:20 a.m.

Wheat Flakes, Maple Granola, and Raisins with Almond Milk.

All day shift at China Wok.

Navel Orange.

It's Easter and people keep calling to ask if we're open or not. Just because Jesus has risen today doesn't mean nobody eats.

Peanut Butter Sandwich. Almond Granola Bar. Salt n Vinegar Chips. Green Tea with Honey.

Janice is running around the restaurant like a mini tornado of energy screaming, bouncing the ball, and spraying every bug in sight with water.

Ana shows up for routine visits after she gets off work. As usual she provides me with a pastry treat from the bakery – Cherry Pie this time – we both share it.

Banana.

Delivering an order to Bay Pointe rehabilitation hospital. You can always depend on finding funny old people and witnessing a laughable incident or two. While waiting for the nurse to come retrieve her Chinese food a pleasant old black lady in a wheel chair says hello to Ana and I. Another nurse approaches...

"How you doin'?" the old lady asks the nurse.

"How you doin'?" the nurse asks back.

"I'm waitin' for a cab."

"Oh," she responds with a sarcastic shock. "Where you goin'?"

She says with a relief, "I'm goin' home."

You can't help but smile. Alzheimer's is a sad part of old age. She's not going anywhere. But then she turns to me, "Are you waitin' for a cab, too?"

I chuckle, "Oh no."

I propose a challenge to Ana in regards to all the times when she gets a little passive-aggressive and makes jealous remarks. I explain...

Experiencing a windstorm...

Ana: "I feel like you can laugh at everything in life."

Me: "That sums up your philosophy right there."

Haunting sounds of the wind on the top floor of a hotel at the oceanfront...

Off work and back home.

Mongolian Chicken with Mixed Vegetables.

While I'm catching up on writing and other things in my room Ana is making a banana cream pie downstairs – there are others loitering in the dining room swallowing pills, drinking, and laughing as hard as they can like it's the last day of their lives.

Ana informs me she's finished with the pie and also cleaned the dishes and kitchen. What a doll. That's one less thing I have to do. Even though she wasn't planning on it she asks to spend the night cause it's pretty late and she doesn't feel like driving home. I say it's okay but in an obvious nonchalant tone that rubs her the wrong way. I didn't mean it to sound like that. She knows how my schedule works on the weekends when I have to work 11-hour days and how when I get home the only energy I want to exert is on myself cause I have none to give. I need my personal time to reflect and simply be alone after work (unless something important is scheduled).

When all is settled we cling on to each other under the covers.

Me: "I'm an old man. You sure you wanna be with an old man?"

Sleep around 3:30 a.m.
