Karacell (May 17 2013)[i]

Waking up around 12:30 p.m.

Blueberry Bagel with Non-Dairy Cream Cheese. Orange Juice.

Fiddling on the computer in the dining room while the steam cleaner guy cleans the carpets throughout the house.

Steam Clean 1435 (2)(May 17 2013)

Grilled Cheese with Tomato and Hummus. Salt n Vinegar Chips. Lemon Water.

The carpet job is complete. There goes $200 and some of the paint stains didn’t even come up.

At the basketball courts playing a few 2-on-2 games with more experienced players.

White Peach and Mango.

There’s a show at The Wave in Norfolk tonight. I got invited by multiple people. On the drive there I scarf down some leftover dinner: Tilapia with Peppers, Onions, Carrots, Rice, and Potatoes. Then wash it down with a Mickey’s.

...

Going to The Wave is usually a special occasion for me. Kelley and her friend Tara came from the house on their own accord. Mingling with them every so often. Ana’s here. We stay by each other’s sides for the most part. Rocky is thrilled to see my face. Her experimental band Scoughs opened up the show along with Karacell, Ikagura, and Geneva Jacuzzi. Out on the smoker’s patio Ana and I witness a guy sitting on the bench dozed off in dreamland wake up suddenly and lean over to spew on the seat next to him. Wow. Later inside relaxing at one of the booths with Ana. She explains that her drinking limit is three beers, which is a responsible line to draw. I respect that. I examine the aesthetics of her overall appearance (the black outfit, her hair, her boots, and the treble clef tattoo that’s showing on her right arm) and explain that she looks exceptionally pretty tonight.

Me: “What color is your heart?”

Ana: “Teal.”

Kelley and Tara plop down in the booth with us briefly. Kelley’s going on about a Japanese redneck that reminded her of her future desire to have babies.

Ana & a PBR (2)(May 17 2013)

While waiting along the banister of the dance floor I have no choice but to eavesdrop on a conversation between a tall cross dresser type and a guy. The cross dresser is upset.

Cross Dresser: “I’m in 4-inch stilettos and he fucking pushed me! He shoved me!”

The guy sympathizes, “Yeah, fuck that shit.”

Cross Dresser: “And he thought it was fucking funny!”

During the beginning of Geneva Jacuzzi’s set of empty costumed theatrics Ana and I dip outside and lounge in the front seats of my car. She lies her head down on my lap as I describe the random happenings around us, which include a drunken woman hugging a beggar and boisterous couples hollering in the street.

I head home. Enjoying a bowl of Cinnamon Toast Crunch before I fall asleep shortly after 4 a.m.

VB Alleys (May 16 2013)[i]

Waking up at 12:30 p.m.

Baked Cinnamon Brown Sugar Grapefruit. Cinnamon Oatmeal with Brown Sugar, Bananas, and Milk. Honey Black Tea.

Getting an eye exam at Pearle Vision. It’s been at least 3 or 4 years since my last one and my glasses are losing their endurance.

Grilled Cheese on a Bagel with Hummus and Tomato. Tortilla Chips with Salsa. Lemon Water.

Tomorrow we’re getting all the carpets steam cleaned, something we’ve never done in our residency here. But the living room has to be cleared out so I take it upon myself to give it a thorough cleaning. Amongst the scraps and rubble of mostly Cheerios, popcorn seeds, loose change, beer cans, pens, bottle caps, etc, I find a 2Gb flash drive and somebody’s birth certificate. The flash drive seems to contain papers and essays from school and the birth certificate belongs to someone born in New York. How does one lose their proof of birth under a couch and never think to look for it?

...

Leslie drops by right when I finish cleaning up. She’s been in the middle of a hectic travel schedule and hasn’t had so much as an ounce of time to see her friends. But here she is. We catch up briefly and fiddle around on the computer, browsing songs.

Shooting up my daily hoops on the Lynnhaven Middle School Courts.

Baked Barbecue Garlic Tilapia with Onions, Peppers, Broccoli, Carrots, and Rice.

Ana comes over with her cool rackety Schwinn vintage beach cruiser. We ride bikes to the beach, meeting up with Elliott. Ana’s a little uneasy on her bike as one of the pedals is locked and she says she doesn’t have a lot of experience biking. But it’s a beautiful night to ride. We take to the boardwalk on the bike lanes and keep going past 40th Street and then along Oceanfront Avenue. We pause in front of The Wyndham hotel on 57th Street.

Elliott: “Have you ever just layed down on Atlantic Avenue?”

Me: “No but I will.”

We lie down on the asphalt knowing the cars in the distance are getting closer.

Me: “Dude, this would be a good photo.”

Accidental Occurence (May 16 2013)

I snap a shot just in time before the cars approach then retreat off the road. One of the cars slows down and turns around up the block. After it passes Elliott and I both realize who it is: Margot. I mean how can you miss that license plate: “MARGOAT”. On instinct we hop on our bikes and jet it across the street. She honks as we disappear into the night. Upon reflection I realize I had nothing to be afraid of. We were only fearful in a sarcastic way.

Me: “My life is so strange. What a small world.”

We keep riding and riding until we stop in an alleyway on 36 ½ Street. Elliott and I have fun with rolling a few huge bulldozer-size tires down the hill.

We part our ways with Elliott. Ana and I head back towards my house.

In the bedroom my eyes are puffy and itchy. And both Ana and I have stuffy sneezy noses. Something must’ve been in the air. But I didn’t see any pollen floating about. So here we are pulling out tissue after tissue blowing our noses and dabbing our eyes. I pop open a bottle of sparkling wine. Sipping on sweet bubbly liquid and composing a nasal symphony. She confesses her love for Vick’s vapor rub. We medicate our irritated nostrils with it.

...

Lying down and cuddling and talking. I’m feeling urges...that are reciprocated. Kissing. Touching. Pleasuring her. I wrap it up and we enter into a sexual outer space. Still learning about the geography of our bodies. At some point I get a bright idea to lubricate myself with the vapor rub. It turns out to be a swell idea. The burning tingling sensation only enhances the experience.

Eventually we settle down to sleep at a late hour.

Vapor. From Habibi.[i]

☼ ○ ▬

Working at China Wok but it’s a completely different restaurant and location. I walk in to find at least five new drivers. “Who are these people? Why do we need so many drivers? This is ridiculous!” Within minutes I realize why after I look at the counter and see at least 50 orders waiting to be made. Everything is taking forever. I’m confused because the Chinese chefs seem to be closing up shop. I step into the kitchen and try to figure out where the General Tso’s chicken is. There’s already a bunch of strange things in the fryer. “Where is Cecily?” I go in search of her. She’s fiddling around on the phone in another room. I yell at her, “Hey! These orders long time! We need your help!” She helps out. I realize some of the addresses on these orders are too far away. I argue. One of the drivers nonchalantly agrees to take it because it's close to his house. Outside I'm having anxiety about where my car is. It was possibly stolen.

Waking up just before 2 p.m.

Ana sent me a few grateful texts, “Thank you for letting me use your kitchen, for the painting, for the refreshing bike ride, the park experience. I hope to do all those with you again soon. There always seems to be something simple, exciting, and active with you. That's such an attractive quality. Not only that.. You're very attentive and sweet. Like I said before.. A rare kinda sweetness. Also.. I have noticed you keep saying that you barely know me, and to be honest.. I do feel glad to hear that because it makes me feel like you want to get to know me.  Any activities whatsoever.. I'm always up for! But painting and biking and tennis is definitely on the top of the want-to-continue-to-do-list-of-activities-with-you. :)”

Waking up at 1:56 p.m. Hard sleep.

Blueberry Bagel with Non-Dairy Cream Cheese. Orange Juice.

Errands.

I had considered sending Aysena an email with one of two things: I was going to just get it all out of my system and write something with disdain, or say something simple like I miss you. We concluded our communication with a bitter taste in our mouths. I haven’t spoken or wrote her since a week ago but it feels like months have passed. Despite the new connection I’ve been making with Ana, which has been wonderful, I still have these embedded achy feelings every now and then when I sense Aysena’s presence in my mind. After finishing my errands and I’m back home I check the computer. She sent me an email. My heart drops just a little. What a coincidence that I had planned on writing her something but she beat me to it.

Subject: don't reply!

I still think of you.

Should I say something back? She said don’t reply. Obviously, if I really wanted to reply back I would anyway. But I’ll just wait.

Ginger Peanut Noodles with Tomatoes and an Egg. Honey Green Tea.

My new rubber tread basketball just came in the mail. I take it to the Lynnhaven Middle School courts and shoot around for a few hours.

Peach Greek Yogurt.

Ana comes over bearing gifts of lumpia. We were supposed to make them from scratch but I guess she didn’t have time to collect all the ingredients so she bought them premade/uncooked from a restaurant. We cook them all for the house and friends. I steam some Kale and Carrots to go with it. James, Minnie and her friend, and Jordan Bostic are present. We don’t have anything to dip the lumpia in so I jet to China Wok via bike and retrieve some sweet & sour sauce. We all dig in. Putting together a red panda puzzle, which we kind of had to do twice after deciding to stick all the pieces together with Sonic stickers. The paints and markers come out. Everybody designs something. Ana paints an image that resembles a lake, a wheat field, and a village with tee pees. Minnie paints an abstract Japanese style picture. James works on a portrait of Leisa. I construct a Kinder Chocolate Wrapper collage, similar to the Alenka collage I did a while ago.

Later, with James and Ana on our bikes. I marvel at Ana’s awesome looking vintage cruiser from the 50’s. We trek to the Friend’s School. Lucky for us the rope swing is unlatched and free to use. It’s a beautiful night to frolic in this playground filled with nostalgia.

Back at the house.

Ana has work early in the morning. My house is a little closer to her job so she spends the night. We just cuddle and mangle in the bed.

My tips are nothing but minimal along with the orders. I’m frustrated and everything is out of my control. All I want to do is be at home in my room sitting at my computer chair eating dinner and watching Hoosiers. Eventually, this happens.

Ikenaga Yasunari.[i]

I set my alarm for 7 a.m. because I was supposed to work an Edible Arrangements shift from 8 to 12. But I’m just not feeling it whatsoever. I make a conscious decision to fall back to sleep.

☼ ○ ▬

In a kitchen I pull out some leftovers from the fridge and make myself a plate of vegetables and potatoes. But before I even have the chance to zap it in the microwave I turn around and Anthony taxed almost half of the food on my plate. I’m livid and go on a five-minute rant to him...

“What the fuck is your problem? You ate half my plate. Manners. Manners, dude. Didn’t your mom teach you that? Please, thank you, whatever and all that kind of shit.”

He’s very apathetic at first, keeping his mouth shut and watching me freak out.

“All I ask is that you respect me and I’ll respect you in return.”

I seem to have struck a chord. He stands up in front of me. I wrap my right arm around him.

“You’re my friend. You’ve always been a good friend.”

We’re both affected by the warm moment of forgiveness. He’s crying. We hug and slap each other’s backs.

“We’ll always be good friends.”

Cinnamon Raisin Bagel with Non-Dairy Cream Cheese. Orange Juice.

All day shift at China Wok.

The first few hours are a slow as a mug. While prepping the takeout bags I have the opportunity to talk with my mom on the phone without interruption. It’s Mother’s Day. We catch up on our lives from the past month. She’s very happy where she’s at, back in the Bartow house with her friend Myra.

Falafel Wrap with Hummus and Tomatoes. Tortilla Chips with Salsa. Honey Green Tea.

Elliott drops in to pay his share of the storage unit rent, then rides around with me on a few deliveries.

Off work and back home with a profitable payload.

Fried Shrimp with Garlic Sauce, Broccoli, Onions, Carrots, and Rice.

Ana comes over. After chitchatting about our weekend I set up everything for a movie to be watched: the laptop perched on the trashcan with the cooling fan underneath and the separate auxiliary speakers rigged on the loft bed. Putting on All Good Things (2010) and sharing Strawberry Mochi Ice Cream.

...

About 40 minutes in we get distracted with affection, which turns into sex. I’m still getting used to her sex language. I think it’s interesting when you come across an uncharted body/soul. There’s so much you don’t know about this creature, how she speaks, how she moves, how she thinks, what makes her feel good. As much as it’s exciting I also feel like I have to be careful and stay open minded.

...

The movie continues. Some scenes present a sinister character of Ryan Gosling.

Me: “This isn’t the Ryan Gosling you’re used to, is it?”

...

Time for Popcorn and Home Brewed Beer.

...

After the movie’s over I flip the lights off and we cuddle in the bed. It’s understood she’ll be sleeping here, as she has to work early in the morning. I can’t help myself; or rather we can’t help ourselves. We need to caress and squeeze as tight as we can.

Sleep at some late hour.

Waking up at 11 a.m.

Blueberry Bagel with Non-Dairy Cream Cheese. Orange Juice.

All day shift at China Wok.

Five Guys French Fries with Ketchup. Honey Green Tea.

Afternoon work is slow.

It’s hot as all get out. But every other hour or so it pours down rain.

On the down time I read Craig Thompson’s latest graphic novel Habibi. I’m just in awe at how carefully crafted it’s drawn and written.

On the way back to the restaurant after taking a delivery I stop at a red light. Next to me are two peppy girls in glasses. They seem amused with me. I just nod my head in acknowledgment.

The black one rolls down the window and comments, “You’re too cool to be biting your nails.”

I respond, “Oh. I’m not really biting my nails. It’s just a nervous habit.”

She smiles and in that second I notice she’s kind of pretty. Just then she blurts out, “You’re cute!”

I smile and react, “Oh.” In my mind my face turned red but I don’t think it actually did.

Her: “There’s a smile!”

The light flashes green.

Her: “Hey. Stay awesome!”

In the evening business picks up.

Apple.

Delivering an order in Linkhorn Bay apartments, my most frequented delivery stomping grounds. It’s been drizzling outside. The customer signs his credit receipt. As I walk off he says, “Stay dry.”

Without hesitation I respond with, “I’ll try.”

Humored by the unplanned rhyme.

Mesquite Almonds. Dried Apricots.

Delivering another order in Linkhorn Bay apartments. I knock on the door multiple times. No answer. But I hear a dog yapping. I call the customer. He answers the second time. Finally opening the door. He seems flustered and as if he was taking a nap. But I soon realize he’s just inebriated.

Inebriated guy: “I used to [hiccup] be a delivery driver...back in the... early 90’s, wait...”

[Pause]

Inebriated guy: “The late 80’s. Yup. So I know what it’s like.”

He slowly hands me three bucks for a tip.

Nude Photo Shoot (4)(May 10 2013)[i]

Throughout the long hours of the morning and early afternoon I’m persistently being awoken by the clinking sounds of the ceiling fan and the racket from construction workers just outside Ana’s window. Eventually I get up and remedy the fan noise by taking out one of the light fixtures. I continue to sleep and sleep and sleep until I can’t sleep anymore.

It’s about 1:30 p.m. I snack on a leftover slice of the pizza from last night, sip on water, and reflect on yesterday’s happenings. I have no idea where to go from here. Everything happened so fast. I have conflicting feelings, but only mildly conflicting. Just weeks ago, I guess maybe even days ago, I was distraught about Aysena. I mean the future between her and I was bleak but it wasn’t any of our faults. I guess I shouldn’t feel guilty. It’s something that’s just not feasible or possible. I’ve lost my faith in that dream. It’s a shame. And not to mention she deleted all communications with me. There doesn’t seem to be any hope on her end. I don’t know what I’m gonna do. I mean what can I do? I need to just live my life here and open myself up to opportunities like I had last night.

It’s almost 4 p.m. Ana arrives home from work. We’re both starving for food and drink. She drives us to the Tropical Smoothie on 21st Street in Ghent. I order one with Goji Berry, Strawberry, Banana, and Non-Fat Yogurt. She orders a kiddie size “chocolate chimp” and a Veggie Hummus Wrap, which I eat half of. We run into Ramona Quimby who works here (she was around for the early days of Show N Tells).

Ramona: “Hey dad.” (One of the few who call me dad)

Me: “I didn’t know you worked here.”

Ramona: “Yeah for the past five years.”

...

Driving back to Ana’s house she comments about her long hair and jokes about getting it cut.

Me: “Your hair is your elegance and beauty.”

Ana: “I don’t know what I’d do without it.”

Me: “You wouldn’t have elegance and beauty.”

...

Back at her house off Norview. I notice the open pizza box with the leftover crusts and how I discarded the condom wrapper there. She happens to own an old record called College Drinking Songs so I set it up for a photo.

After that we settle down in her bedroom. She’s real cuddly and affectionate. I take a liking to her pet-like behavior. Things get steamy after we start touching each other and it progresses into sex. This will be the second time in the last 24 hours. I finish this time.

...

Relaxing on the futon after our appetite was satisfied. She catches me pondering.

Ana: “I always feel like you’re thinking and I want to know what it is.”

Me: “My mind is always racing. But I was just thinking about how little I know about you.”

Ana: “You’ll know more in time.”

I pick up my phone to type some words.

Ana: “And you’re always taking notes. That’s cute. But then you have to don’t you? But you like it too.”

Me: “I really like how calm it feels to hang out with you.”

...

Her black and white striped chair by the window inspires a photo shoot.

On the Futon (May 9 2013)[i]

Waking up around 1 p.m.

Baked Cinnamon Brown Sugar Grapefruit. Black Tea with Honey.

Browsing basketball videos on Youtube.

Finishing Hey Princess by Mats Jonsson.

Egg Sandwich with Mayonnaise and Tomato. Tortilla Chips with Salsa. Lemon Water.

I head to the Lynnhaven Middle School courts to work on my ball handling and dribbling. Of course I can’t resist joining a game with some of the other players on the court. It’s a 3-on-3 match with a mixture of kids and one other adult.

Mango. Strawberry Yogurt.

Show at The Shaq tonight. I dutifully pay the $5 cover and buy one of Emily’s Dark Chocolate Vegan Cake Pops. First on is Will’s new band project with Logan, Honorary Girl, which lights up the room with upbeat punk tunes, then Van rips up the stage with his ridiculous rap antics, then a band originally hailing from Texas called The Numerators put on a powerhouse set. Bamm Bamm is supposed to go on last but of course Josh, the drummer, is absent. This happened one other time at another show. No worries though I’m delegated to play drums even though I’ve never practiced with them. However I do know the structure of the songs so I rig up a three piece drum set (tom, hi-hat, and snare) and play as hard as I can. I’m fueled by a big can of Foster’s so everything feels hazy. Josiah refuses to play the songs he wrote so Jonathon Reynolds (on bass) and I just jam and follow Josiah in a loose rock n roll fashion.

...

After the show I had made plans to hang out with Ana. I follow her behind on the interstate to a Chanello’s to get a large Cheese Pizza with Green Peppers. Bringing it back to her house. Cooped up in her bedroom clobbering slices of pizza and drinking Peppermint Tea. Putting on the ghostly sounds of Dead Man’s Bones, Ryan Gosling’s music project, which I never heard of before tonight. Everything is distinct and I’m existentially aware of this new scenario with a special girl I barely know. It feels like a scene from that comic memoir I just finished reading, Hey Princess.

...

Her room contains a modest collection of owl paraphernalia and music books. I notice she owns the same bicentennial records of Beethoven’s music that I have. There’s an Albert Einstein poster on a black couch not hanging up. I also have an Albert Einstein poster. There’s a connection we both have to music. I still haven’t heard her play any kind of music but I know it’s something close to her because I see a lot of music related knick-knacks. We find a Patsy Cline cassette tape and put it on. The first song I remember my mom used to sing to me when I was a kid.

“Crazy. I’m crazy for feeling so lonely. I’m crazy, crazy for feeling so blue. I knew you’d love me as long as you wanted…”

Without thinking I ask her to dance. There we are slow dancing to the romantic tunes of Patsy Cline. It feels nice to just sway and hold each other close. A newfound romance has begun...

...

While tumbling innocently on the floor amongst eucalyptus beads that were spilt days before, she nips the side of my face and neck with her lips and her butterfly-like eyelashes sometimes brushing by my ear, a sensitive spot that if licked and caressed by a mouth can lead to powerful feelings of desire and surrender. I’m reluctant at first but give in to a kiss eventually. They’re careful kind of kisses though, no tongue or anything like that, just wading in the warm water of the moment.

...

Something I’m noticing about Ana is how agreeable she is and quick to worry about my comfort. She’s constantly making sure that I’m comfortable and always asking “What?” even if I don’t say anything. Even a slight body movement on my part communicates to her that I might be displeased or have something to say. It’s kind of cute. I’ve never known anyone who is in a perpetual state of concern about the other’s wellbeing. I can’t tell if it’s an insecurity or if it’s just a positive part of who she is.

...

She keeps mentioning how she frequently drops things on the floor and breaks a lot of stuff on accident.

Me: “Do you do that with people’s hearts?”

Ana: “Sometimes. I have, but only because it was necessary.”

Me: “I did that too.”

...

It’s after 3 in the morning. We fold out the futon bed. The blinds from one of the windows are pulled up letting in the moody glow of a streetlamp. She’s not interested in sleeping even though she has to get up for work in a few hours. So we just lie there cuddling and feeling and looking and breathing and tasting.

Me: “Your legs are softer than I imagined.”

At certain points the tension is just too heavy and the desires heat up. We touch one another in pleasure. During the heavenly ecstatic instances she breathes hard and attempts to say things. At one point she mutters, “What did I do to deserve this?” I whisper back, “Shhh. Just relax. Don’t talk.” I continue. We continue. Stop. We take a break for a minute. I entertain the idea of going all the way. I have a condom in my book bag. But we both have our reservations. In the end there’s mutual consent. I wrap it up and we actually have sex. I tell her how beautiful she is. And it’s true. Her thick black hair drapes across her chest and back in such an elegant fashion. I’m smitten. She expresses her concern about not having endurance or something like that. I assure her that it’s okay.

...

While lying on the futon in relief I mention a lyric from Rilo Kiley, “Kissing leads to touching and touching leads to sex and then there is no mystery left.”

Me: “That’s one of my favorite lines.”

Ana: “It’s not true though.”

Me: “Yeah I don’t necessarily agree with it. But there is some truth to it.”

I pause and say, “You don’t even know me...yet. I don’t know you either.”

...

We initiate a deal between her and I: “Let’s not ever talk about our past relationships.”
Cause it’s irrelevant and could taint what’s happening now. I realize I’ve never done anything like this with anyone else. I’m hoping it will be successful as this little flame grows.

We’ve traveled millions of miles in outer space and have finally reached contact with an alien race. Their appearance isn’t that much different than ours except they’re giants, their height being at least ten times higher than us. A toddler of their race would amount to about five feet. Later I’m trapped inside a pool containment facility. One of the alien humans is flinging these strange ninja stars in my direction. It’s understood that our crew, including myself, have developed superhuman abilities and in this instance it’s not difficult to dodge and shield myself from the dangerous projectiles. After successfully protecting myself the aliens decide I’m worthy enough to step inside their world. I meet a 12-year-old girl. Of course she’s like seven feet tall. Even though she’s young in age and looks, it’s understood that she’s already lived 2,000 years. The life span of this alien race averages to about 20,000 years. So they age slowly as their intelligence rapidly progresses. It’s understood they know how to speak every single language from earth. I ask the 12-year-old, “So what do you call us humans in your language?” She answers something that sounds like, “Ya-yeh-yoo.”

Waking up shortly after 12:30 p.m.

Oatmeal with Milk, Brown Sugar, and Bananas.

Aysena messages me something sweet while I’m eating my oatmeal.

“I really wish I were falling asleep tonight spooning you. I really wish I were waking up tomorrow to your sleepy smile. I really wish you were near always.”

Considering some of the rockiness we’ve been experiencing, the bittersweet longings, and the bouts of regret for still having feelings for each other when we’re both thousands of miles apart, this is mildly conflicting, especially when another person just confessed somewhat innocent feelings towards me last night.

I run some errands and rush back home. I’m supposed to talk with Aysena on Skype but both of us are on a time constraint. She’s immediately sad faced and solemn stricken when she appears on the computer screen. Somehow, through both of our deprived and confusing feelings, the conversation turns sour. It’s just too much, for her and for me. She doesn’t want to talk anymore and threatens to delete our communications on Facebook. I don’t understand why it has to be so dramatic. I’m frazzled and upset.

...

And now Art is in the house waiting on me to be finished. I have to go. We end the conversation and that’s that. Ugh. Just depressing.

On the tennis courts with Art. It’s drizzling but that doesn’t stop us from playing a few matches. In the end he wins.

Back home. I notice Aysena really did restrict my access to her Facebook and VK. But that doesn’t stop me from sending an email. I don’t necessarily take the plea stance but I speak my mind and try to calm down the stressful connection between her and I. The problem is there isn’t any future for us. Trying to get anyone from another country (especially Russia) into America legally and successfully is probably the most difficult thing to accomplish. It’s almost damn near impossible unless you have a lot of money and time. It’s hard to accept but I think this relationship between Aysena and I was meant only for a season. As much as I want to deny it I think it’s over.

...

When one door closes another one opens.

Mango Greek Yogurt. Kinder Chocolate.

Doing laundry.

Lemon Breaded Swai Fillet with Onions, Peppers, Kale, Carrots, and Couscous.

Chris Remaley comes over. Up in my room he recants stories of his merchant marine travels and his latest romantic ventures while I upload some video footage from past Musicplayer and Tokyo shows on his computer.

Downstairs, Wyatt and Richie are collaborating on some art. James is raving about broccoli. I’m dribbling the basketball around practicing my ball handling skills.

Popcorn and Mango.

Watching the movie about Pistol Pete.

Ana's Corner (2)(May 7 2013)[i]

Waking up shortly after 1 p.m.

Garlic Onion Bagel with Non-Dairy Cream Cheese. Orange Juice.

Cleaning up the aftermath from last night – silver tinsel and a deck of cards everywhere.

Falafel Wrap with Tomatoes and Hummus.

Watching Hoop Dreams (1994).

This evening I made plans to hang out with Ana. We dabble in a few rounds of tennis next to First Colonial High School before we get rained out. Then, head to Rock Fish for our second attempt to use this $50 gift card I’ve had for a while. We arrive just in time before they decide to close.

...

Bronzed Tuna with Mashed Potatoes, Mixed Vegetables, a Salad, and a Dreamsicle Crush Drink.

...

At my house in my room. She sits down on the floor by the dresser below my bookshelf.

Ana: “I’m gonna sit in my corner.”

Me: “That really IS your corner. [Ha-ha] I’m gonna make a sign for you.”

 Ana's Corner (7)(May 7 2013)

This is nice. We read excerpts from The Bible and talk about the popular song “Hallelujah” that pulled from stories in The Bible. We play multiple games of “Speed” using a deck of vintage playing cards I snagged from the thrift store on a makeshift style Japanese table I put together with cinder blocks and a slab of wood. Sipping on Honey Oolong Tea and talking on a range of things: chemistry and being on the same page, trust, films, etc.

Ana's Corner (5)(May 7
2013)

“Everything turns up at a thrift store eventually.”

...

I walk her out to the car. We exchange an array of hugs, per her request. I’m really into this friendship that’s forming.

Later in the night (or to be put more accurately, early morning) after eating some Kinder Chocolate and researching basketball, a few texts are shared. She calls me a “rare sweetness” in one and in another fairly long text she explains “I could definitely picture something more blossoming from our friendship because I do like you.” ::::::::::: I just sit back and take that in for a second. I smile and my heart giggles a little bit.

It changes the psyche of your relations with somebody after knowing this information. It can be used to one’s advantage. One piece of the mystery has been chipped off. I’m only encouraged by the pressing nature of time to chip off more to this mystery.

Broccoli Mic (May 6 2013)[i]

Waking up at 11 a.m.

Banana. Blueberry Acai Granola Bar. Orange Juice.

All day shift at China Wok.

It’s a breezy sunny day but just another slow Monday.

Egg Wrap with Non-Dairy Cream Cheese and Tomatoes. Goldfish Crackers. Coconut Water.

This day just gets slower and slower and slower.

Apple.

Going through rollercoaster-like interaction with Aysena. But really most of the misunderstandings can be chalked up to her limited English vocabulary, even though she’s super smart. I just feel too much.

Her style when dealing with obstacles is “I better cry once and keep living.” Of course mine involves a series of analytic mind constraints before I can say anything is finished. We both live in extremes. The remedy is a balance of strength and compassion I think.

Continuing to read Hey Princess by Mats Jonsson.

Vegetable Lo Mein.

Back home. Anthony just finished performing a show at Chicho’s and a nice crowd of friends have gathered here. Rachel and Wyatt are back from California. After showing Wyatt the Alenka collage I made a few days ago we get into a brief conversation about the validity of analog art amongst digital art, how easy it is to manipulate any original image, and the direction of art in general.

I join the camaraderie downstairs. Be-bopping. Sipping on beers. A general sense of humor fuels the antics. Ben, our tall black neighbor, is here. He has quite the riot of a personality. Teaching me a few tactics to box fighting.

Where is Josh (May 6 2013)

Eventually I retreat to my room. I announce, “Okay I’m going to my room and watching Hoop Dreams two times!”

Cinnamon Toast Crunch.

Savage Beauty. Alexander McQueen.[i]

☼ ○ ▬

Stuck in the backseat of a car with Minnie. It’s understood I’m a friendly spirit to her. A beautiful woman encircles the car with eager sexual intentions to come inside. I watch this woman continue to walk in a seductive manner. I turn to Minnie and ask, “Do you cringe every time she looks at you?” The woman keeps staring. Minnie’s eyes water up and she leans her head into my shoulder. She’s scared. It seems she doesn’t have the power to avoid the woman. In this moment I realize this is something serious and that this beautiful woman is evil and could possibly even be the devil himself.

Waking up around 11:30 a.m.

Banana. Acai Blueberry Granola Bar. Orange Juice.

All day shift at China Wok.

Falafel Wrap with Hummus and Tomatoes. Goldfish Crackers. Lemon Water. Kinder Chocolate.

I’m dipping myself in a well of bitterness today. Aysena is acting judgmental and being short with me through messages. I posted last year’s blog entry. In it I was incredibly sad about conclusions with a past lover. Now I’m being told, “you don't have anything like strength inside man,” which she means I don’t have strength like a real man. The criticism is getting old and unbecoming. I have to keep defending my actions and feelings from LAST YEAR. Why does she care so much about it? I really don’t get it. Either way I’m left rambling on in and out of my deliveries but she’s being plain rude and without empathy. I don’t understand her.

Peach Greek Yogurt.

My heart is still with her but it’s a battle inside. Sometimes I just want to forget about my connection with this Yakutian princess across the ocean. But then other times I think it would be a mistake to let it go. I could be missing out on a desirable fairytale of love. But the obstacles are too many, the distance between each other too much. Globalization fails in this matter.

Sloooooooooow. It’s terribly slow for business tonight for whatever reason.

Becca has been in town over the weekend. I don’t know how it happened but we get carried away in a fake text conversation impersonating a typical married couple with kids.

Husband: “Ah okay. Well ill be at home hopefully around 1030.”

Wife: “Ok I’ll have a bath drawn for you.”

Husband: “And dinner prepared yes? Thanks honey.”

Wife: “It will be ready when you get out from your bath. It’s in the crock pot now.”

Husband: “OoOo. You know how I looove your crock pot meals.”

Wife: “That’s why I made it. Don’t forget to pick up the dry cleaning.”

Husband: “Don’t forget to pick up the kids!”

Wife: “No, Marjorie is getting them, she is taking them to Ed and Sandy’s for the night. Remember this is the Busch Gardens week for the kids.”

Husband: “Oooooh. So that means its just you and me in our big ole house. Good thing we designed the bathtub big enough for the two of us.”

Wife: “You’ll have to get a fire going and we can eat by candlelight. I took the trash out for you, so we can just enjoy ourselves.”

Profits were a total dud, a total bla$e day.

Fried Shrimp with Broccoli, Onions, Carrots, Rice, and Garlic Sauce.

Off work and back home.

All the bedroom doors are open – hanging out with Becca, James, Leisa, Darren, and Kelley. I crank up the volume to a “Them” playlist on Youtube. There’s makeshift dancing and squat exercises. Swinging the basketball around. I needed to release some steam tonight.

A bowl of Cinnamon Toast Crunch.

Five Guys French Fries with Ketchup (May 4 2013)[i]

Waking up at 11 a.m.

Strawberry Greek Yogurt with Bananas. Honey Oolong Tea.

All day shift at China Wok.

It’s a fairly busy day for deliveries.

Mesquite Almonds. Five Guys French Fries with Ketchup. Lemon Water.

Delivering an order to an apartment in Barberton Court. A big black man with bulging wild eyes answers the door. His living room is dark. He hands me exact change for his food then pulls out a dollar bill debating whether or not to hand it to me.

“Do you need a dollar for tip?” he asks with a furrowed brow.

“Yes. We work for tips. But that’s up to you.” I say.

I shouldn’t have even said that last part because then he puts the bill away and shakes his head, “Ah. Nah.” then closes the door. Wow.

Apple.

“A healthy relationship is one where two independent people just make a deal that they will help make the other person the best version of themselves.”

Finally, after 11.5 hours of hard labor, I’m at home. As soon as I step into the door there’s a debate between Kelley and Darren that’s somehow escalated to the point where they’re screaming. I retreat up to my room.

Enjoying some Vegetable Egg Fried Rice and watching one of my favorite basketball movies, Blue Chips (1994), and sipping on a beer.

Rick's Cafe (two fish)(May 3 2013)[i]

Waking up heavily around 1 p.m.

Garlic Onion Bagel with Non-Dairy Cream Cheese. Orange Juice.

Errands.

Working out.

Ginger Peanut Noodles with Tomatoes, Pita, and Hummus.

Watching Coach Carter (2005).

Learning songs on the piano and guitar.

Barbecue Garlic Salmon with Onions, Peppers, and Chard Greens.

Becca’s in town for the weekend. And as usual the opportunity to get a haircut has to be taken. She comes over and gives me the typical cut of shaved sides and back.

Too Much Hair (May 3 2013)

Afterwards we meet up at Rick’s Café with James, Chris Remaley, and this guy Kofi I met while working at China Wok. Chris should be out on a ship doing his merchant marine work but he explains that he got an injury after falling down the stairs so they sent him home to heal.

...

Sipping on Coffee and sharing a Brownie dessert with Becca.

Back at the house Chris and I reminisce over old video footage from Musicplayer shows.

In reaction to the recent Alenka collage I made the other night Becca says, “Robert I love that! You can’t quit, never quit life.” I don’t consider it one of the finest pieces I’ve made but it has a simplistic Andy Warhol design to it that really appeals to me. I just really like that she told me to never quit life. I think it’s the kind of thing you should tell people often.

Popcorn and watching a basketball movie.

Like a Gold Ring. Kahna Baal.[i]

Waking up around 1 p.m.

Cinnamon Brown Sugar Oatmeal with Bananas.

Working on a collage made out of pieces of a North American map ripped up by Kevin the other night.

Falafel Egg Wrap with Hummus, Non-Dairy Cream Cheese, and Tomatoes. Goldfish Crackers. Lemon Water.

Watching Coach Carter (2005).

Getting roughed up and sweaty...on the basketball courts. With Anthony, Moe, and our newly acquainted neighbor, Ben, who proves to us multiple times that he can slam-dunk anytime he wants. I mean he’s got the height and the stature. Matt, our other b-ball buddy from last week shows up. Kevin rode here on his bike. We play a few games of 3-on-3. Later, we conjoin with a group of players and compete in three 5-on-5 full court games, our crew versus theirs. Even with my new Reebok Pumps after a while the blisters start to develop near my big toes. We win and lose some. But overall they were well matched games and we leave the courts with pride and relief.

Back at the house. I quickly take a shower because I have a date with Ana Khrizzia. The original plan was to use this $50 gift card I’ve had in my possession for a long time. It’s a little before 10 p.m. when we arrive at Rock Fish only to find out they’ve closed the kitchen early. So we settle for pizza at Chicho’s. A large Cheese with Green Peppers and Mushrooms. Washing it down with a Mr. Pibb. This will be our second one-on-one hangout together. Her voice is a little quiet compared to the loud soundtrack this bar provides. It’s “like a crescendo and decrescendo, the way music is,” she says.

...

Back at the house. Ben comes over to retrieve the back of his cell phone that he left at the court. He’s a chill dude and seems to hit it off well with the housemates. Him and Kevin fry up some potatoes in the kitchen while sipping on bottle Natty Ice. Later, he pulls out a stack of songs and raps he wrote while in the pen. He seems to need fresh faces and new camaraderie. I’m glad he’s been hanging out with us.

...

Upstairs in my room. Ana and I sitting on the floor near the bookshelf – going through books and reading to her random excerpts I’ve underlined. I pull out Sylvia Plath’s The Bell Jar, “I think you’ll like this one.”

“I didn't know why I was going to cry, but I knew that if anybody spoke to me or looked at me too closely the tears would fly out of my eyes and the sobs would fly out of the throat and I'd cry for a week.”

I pull out the very first journal I ever started writing in when I was almost done with high school (circa 2001-2002). While comparing some entries from it to my current notebook I realize my big-lettered quick-paced handwriting from 11 years ago hasn’t changed one bit.

Ana: “Maybe it means you’re staying true to yourself.”

Me: “Maybe.”

I turn on the electric kettle and we sip on mug after mug of Oolong Tea with Honey while we immerse ourselves in conversation, catching tidbits of information and opening up to each other about our lives. She notices the bottom shelf full of religious texts, mostly bibles and spiritual texts I used to read when I was younger. With my Christian background and her Mormon background it becomes an interesting tangle of cords. But for her it was merely a background rather than a practiced religion. At any rate I pull out my personal bible that I used to read a lot. She enjoys me reading aloud wisdom Proverbs has to offer and the philosophical understandings Ecclesiastes lays out.

“Wine is a mocker and beer a brawler; whoever is led astray by them is not wise.”
                                                                                 — Proverbs 20:1

“Like a gold ring in a pig’s snout is a beautiful woman who shows no discretion.”
                                                                                 — Proverbs 11:22

I point out that the section in Ecclesiastes about the seasons and how there’s a time for everything inspired The Byrd’s song, “Turn! Turn! Turn!”. Both feeling enlightened. I joke about how we should start a bible study at Rick’s Café but she thinks we actually should.

Me: “Haha. Yeah that’ll be cool!”

I notice in our interaction how agreeable she is, often affirming me with yes’s or yeah’s before I even finish my sentences, as if she already knows what I’m about to say. Of what I know of her so far I see a pure heart. It’s almost 3 a.m. so she’s off to Norfolk.

Shower Dream 5000 (on the set)(May 1 2013)[i]

Waking up at 12:42 p.m.

Baked Cinnamon Brown Sugar Grapefruit. Strawberry Greek Yogurt.

Tweaking.

Falafel Wrap with Hummus, Non-Dairy Cream Cheese, and Tomatoes. Salt n Vinegar Chips. Lemon Water. Strawberries. Kinder Chocolate.

Watching The Paperboy (2012).

At the Lynnhaven Middle School courts shooting some hoops with the new Reebok Pumps I got in the mail.

Apple.

Shrimp Gyoza. Edamame. String Beans. Spring Rolls.

Powered and maintained by Anthony we’ve started a project of shooting short films at the house called Garbage Dump Theater, exclusively shot on iPhones. The first one in the series is about a man in multiple shower scenarios. One scene involves a party in the bathroom where we all sing “Jumper” by Third Eye Blind and get live.

Red & Blue (May 1 2013)

Afterwards, we meet up at Rick’s Café. Sipping on Coffee – accidently pouring creamer on the table and making images out of it – attempted magic tricks with cards – we’re a rowdy bunch.

Face Warp 1 (May 1 2013)
