I’m in the restaurant (at China Wok) on the clock. It’s understood two robbers are on the loose and have approached our door. I prepared for this and already locked the entrance. After hiding all my money inside a VHS tape in my backpack I turn off all the lights and tell the others to lay low and not to move, in hopes all this will deter the robbers. But my boss just stands there in clear view behind the counter like an idiot. The robbers see her. I guess it was decided to let them in because if we didn’t they would break the windows and rob the place anyway. One of the robbers is Jeff Bridges. He places a single handcuff on my left wrist with intention to clasp the other side later. The robbers sit down casually at a table. I join them and act as if everything is cool. We chitchat like old friends.

It’s a decent Monday for business.

Grilled Cheese on a Bagel with Tomato and Hummus. Salt n Vinegar Chips. Honey Green Tea.

As I’m pulling into a neighborhood for a delivery I notice a man freeze his gaze at me as I drive up. After I get out of the car, without any kind of stranger greeting, he just says, “That is the ugliest car I’ve ever seen!”

I don’t have a clue what to say so I just respond with, “Thanks man.”

On the phone with a buddy of his he gets back into his personal conversation. As I walk away I hear him mention something about the purple people eater. Wow. Well that’s a first. I’ve never gotten that reaction before. I don’t even think he was being sarcastic. He seriously dislikes my car.

The day just flies by into the night.

Later, I receive another comment in the Colonial Arms neighborhood. Some kid yells out, “Purple Nurple!”

Trapped in an oval-shaped system of offices – in the center of the building, the foyer. This place is nostalgic and haunting – built in the middle of a forest. Outside, agents are scheming to capture me. I attempt various plans of escape, one where I’m flapping my arms above the ground over a cascading river – then hop atop the roofs of cars.

It’s been a few weeks since rain has fallen, and as soon as one droplet touches the ground the phones start ringing off the hook. Starting from five o’clock and on it’s non-stop deliveries. Everybody orders at once. I’ve never truly understood the correlation between the weather and one’s appetite. For some reason whenever there’s even a slight shift in the air people lose motivation to prepare their own dinner.

Bosc Pear.

The night continues. And I’m given a surprise visit by Margot, but not so much a surprise as we had been corresponding today via text. She shows up with a story to share that happened to her the previous night that involves meeting a guy named Taylor who is Elliott’s cousin, and who happens to be cousins with her girlfriend’s husband-to-be. Because I’ve hung out with Taylor a few times in the past, he mentioned that he knows me. It’s one of those small world moments. But the real reason she shares this story with me is because the blog was mentioned. I guess Taylor had said, “Oh Robert with the blog?” Margot felt embarrassed because of all the stuff I’ve written about her and such. She’s worried guys will misperceive who she is and judge her based on what they read, that is if they even read it. At this point it’s not like all of Virginia Beach reads the blog, just friends of friends maybe. But that’s as far as the degree goes.

...

She rides around with me on a few deliveries. She mentions how she got her hair done different and makes some kind of playful smart remark about how I didn’t notice.

Me: “Sorry it’s dark in here and I’m driving.”

At a stoplight I pause and take notice. It’s light brown with a purple shade on one side.

Me: “Oh that’s nice. It looks good.”

...

There was already an understanding that we shouldn’t be hanging out or talking in any way really. I don’t know why today was an exception. I guess when you’re reminded of somebody it’s hard to resist telling them.

Fried Shrimp with Broccoli, Carrots, Onions, and Rice in Garlic Sauce.

Back home.

It’s still raining lightly outside but it doesn’t stop me from going for a jog. I really needed this – my legs marching across the wet asphalt – my body moving rhythmically – the sound of water whooshing through the trees.

...

Inside the house, Skippy, Kevin, and a friend of theirs, Elysa, are here attempting to play Jenga but Kevin, being his usual klutzy self, repeatedly accidently knocks the tower down after three moves. While I was out running this girl Elysa caught wind that I was in Mae for a few years. Apparently she was a major fan in high school. She also plays a little piano as well as violin. Diddling on the piano and trying to figure out some of the songs I used to play over and over again on tour.

Michael Jordan apparently became interested in gymnastics. I observe him use the flying rings attached to this colossal swing machine. Somehow I’m on the rings too along with a buddy of ours. We all start swinging in strides of great distances. Adrenaline is high. We just keep swinging and swinging, trying not to lose control and collide into each other.

It’s a typical non-fun day.

Business picks up in the evening.

While delivering through one of my usual neighborhoods I come across a truck towing what’s supposed to resemble Santa’s sleigh. It looks almost surreal at first. Twinkling reindeer-shaped Christmas lights atop the roof with a real-life Santa Claus laughing with a handful of kids in the back.

At the customer’s doorstep.

Me: “I think I just saw Santa Claus.”

Snacking on Chocolate Truffles.

Later on I’m driving through another neighborhood. I notice a raccoon squirming in agony in the middle of the road, but there’s not enough time to stop and so I plow right over him, without nipping any part of his body. But it’s apparent he was already run over by the car in front of me. There’s nothing I can do. I feel a sudden chill run down my spine...a feeling of grief. I feel really bad for the little guy.

Kevin arrives home from work with multiple boxes of leftover pizzas from Chanello’s. I grab a few slices but add some sautéed Black Beans, Onions, Peppers, and Mushrooms to them.

...

In my room Leslie discovers my homemade Mancala egg carton. We engage in one lengthy game while making fun of each other.

My fingers smell of garlic as I continue to pack all the artwork into the plastic sleeves. Leslie divulges into a detailed psychoanalysis of her fears in love and relationships.

...

Leslie: “It’s basically like I’m existing within extremes and I know that I need to, like, come a little bit closer to equilibrium from where I am but I was on the other side of that spectrum for so long that this seems like a better place to be when in truth its really not any greater, it just feels like it is...”

...

Me: “Where do you wanna be? Where will you be happiest?”

Leslie: “In truth I don’t believe that [he]’s ever going to be emotionally sophisticated enough to be with me.”

...

Me: “Not everyone understands you. You can’t possibly understand everyone!”

...

Me: “It’s hard to eliminate people out of your life...that have already created such a deep connection...”

Leslie: “For me to elect to remove somebody from my life is like the craziest thing in the world for me...”

Many performances are given including raps, spoken word, songs, circuit-bent keytar demonstrations, painting of the TV Tower, etc.

[ii]

In light of the shocking shenanigans and particular events that take place through out the course of the evening I will consolidate everything into short stories.

►►►►►►►►►►►►

Fireballs
[Clonk!] Damn, somebody just threw a fireball at my head. I look around and observe the individually wrapped atomic fireball candies being slung across the room. That slam-poetry kid, Maxwell, brought a huge plastic container full of them. They’re a hit.

The Flood
At some point amidst the Americana jam sounds of Anthony’s guitar and Kevin’s violin Doug grabs my arm and explains, “Robert, you need to come see this.” There’s a look of sincere fear and concern in his eyes. I’m escorted to the dining room to find water, not dripping, but flooding through cracks in the ceiling. I run upstairs to investigate in the bathroom where most of the leak problems have occurred in the past. It’s apparent that some gremlin decided to clog the sink with a doll’s head and leave the faucet running, which caused the bathroom to flood and in return caused the leaks in the ceiling. Gratefully, a few volunteers help maintain the situation. Nobody can confirm whodunit. It’s like that board game Clue. Of course considering Jessa’s track record the majority of fingers point to her. I can’t deny the possibility nor can I single out any one person. It will forever remain a mystery.

The Finch
I keep hearing rumors of an unleashed bird in the house. I run across Rachel in the upstairs hallway. She’s terribly distressed and claims Jessa Potter is running around with a bird letting it flutter about. I locate Jessa in the kitchen. She’s cupping the finch securely in her hand. Eventually she places him underneath the plastic lid with the cake. I examine the finch – his tiny beady eyes – his bright red beak. He’s frightened by all the giants and the noise. The frosting sticks to his little feet. He doesn’t belong here. I scoop him up into my hands gently and walk outside near the big bush. It’s cold. The fog emits from my breath. He won’t leave my hands but instead flutters up and perches on my shoulder. “Aw. It’s okay. Don’t be scared,” I tell him. Then he flies off into the wild. Later I find out that this finch was purchased from the pet store by Jessa and wasn’t wild to begin with. I hope he remembers his natural bird instincts and seeks out food for himself. Along with that other people seem to be convinced that Jessa killed a bird in Kevin’s room. But they are delusional. That didn’t happen. My goodness everyone. Calm down. I freed him from unfortunate demise!

Plague of Crickets
Kevin stomps down the steps looking angrily perplexed. He grabs my shirt and demands I come outside. He peers straight into my eyes and asks, “Did you know anything about the crickets?”

“The crickets? What are you talking about?”

He’s infuriated. Apparently there’re a hundred crickets hopping rampant in his bedroom.

I reassure him, “Dude, I honestly don’t know anything about the crickets. I promise.”

He screams out profanities that echo off the apartment buildings.

“Just calm down man,” I say.

“NO! I won’t calm down. I’m bout to fucking kill someone!”

I’ve never seen Kevin this enraged over anything in all the years I’ve known him. He paces back and forth, breathing heavily. Eventually, he just storms off down the street to release steam.

◄◄◄◄◄◄◄◄◄◄◄◄

The night took on biblical proportions as you can see. Was this triple 12 number a cause for all this chaos? Or was it just coincidence? It seemed to me to be an experiment in human behavior, a study if you will, on the psycho-trauma in communication – how facts and stories become skewed after being shared by multiple people (the telephone game) – the fire of the tongue and its deception – how easily confusion erupts from shocking events – how the blame is placed on others just by mere association. Anger seeks retribution immediately – it isn’t patient whatsoever. He said-she said-they said-I saw-we saw-bullshit. I think therefore I know. I assume therefore its fact. My God what a psychological mess.

...

And to add to it quite a number of people misplaced their valuables (cameras, phones, purses, etc.) and some turned out to be stolen.

...

It’s important to mention a letter that I read into the microphone as an introduction to Show N Tell. I found a letter that Kenneth wrote to me dating back to February 27 2011. He composed it the day after a Show N Tell we had when we were living at the 1623 house. After reading through it again some people think it was an omen. Decide for yourself.

The circus and the mayhem finally come to a close. We kick everybody out around 1 a.m. I join up with William Clark, Sasha, and Tristan at Rick’s.

...

I feel utterly drained – sucked dry from everything. It’s a big responsibility hosting such a thing of that caliber but especially after dealing with so much nonsense. I order the Catfish Strips with Cocktail Sauce, Broccoli, Mac n Cheese, and Hush Puppies.

...

Sasha notices how tense I am and asks if I’m okay.

Me: “Yeah I’ll be fine. I just need to get something to eat. I’m kind of like a sponge. So when someone comes to me and they’re really frustrated with their life or they’re really angry I just feel that...I feel that.”

...

The conversation is fun and Tristan proves to be quite the entertaining smart aleck. In describing Kevin Will says, “He’s a good story but a better experience.”

Back at the house. I’m tired but don’t feel like sleeping knowing the house is such a mess. Tristan lends a helping hand and we clean up the party debris.

I tell Tristan, “We survived the flood. We survived the plague. And we survived another Show N Tell.”

Sleep at some ungodly hour.

I’m a student in an elementary school. It’s understood that I’m 21 years old, which in waking life would be strange but here in dream world it is not. I only have three fellow classmates. During P.E. I encourage a game of wall ball with one of the boys. He’s never played so I show him how to play. We’re in the gym and there are hoops. With haste I search in the supply room for a basketball but all the balls on the racks are low on air. I locate the air pump and the needle. Having trouble attaching the needle to the pump. For some reason there’s a roll of Sonic stickers stuffed inside the pump. Carefully I remove it. Our teacher walks in on me.

Considering how all these balls are airless I ask him, “So I guess nobody really plays basketball around here?”

“No, they don’t,” he replies.

He explains that we need to move on to the classroom to learn about computers. But before we leave he sneaks up behind me and playfully touches my private area. It’s uncomfortable. I react with a laughable, “Whoa!”

It’s officially Delivery Driver Unappreication Day here at China Wok. Have you stiffed your delivery driver today?

The fact of the matter is in the tipping business fluctuation is unavoidable. Some days are bad. Some days are good. Some days are mediocre. And some days are full of Darren-esque rage. Today just happens to be the latter. But whatever. Redemption is around the corner. The few generous customers help balance things out with their $7 to $10 tips.

Waking up at 12:30 p.m.

Strawberry Toaster Pastries. Orange Juice.

Having to drive all the way out to the courthouse to file this warrant in debt so I can set a court date with my former roommate who owes me money. I should’ve brought my running shoes because I didn’t realize I would be having to walk back and forth from the post office to the clerks office, which are at least five blocks apart. The General District Court building is a maze to begin with. At first I stepped into the wrong clerk office where they give out marriage licenses and hunting licenses. While waiting behind an eager couple in line I notice a strangely familiar face behind the counter speaking with them. Upon first glance I wouldn’t have thought anything of it. But I distinctly remember this person as being a fellow student I knew from 1st grade. I even remember having a dream about her where I kissed her in the hallway. And at that time I was convinced that other people in my dreams were dreaming the same dream with me. So the next day I came up to her in class and asked, “So how was it?” but she didn’t have a clue what I was talking about. I learned my lesson. I doubt she would recognize me though and I’m surprised I even do so I refrain from saying anything. I talk to the other clerk and find out the small claims division is somewhere else.

...

This whole ordeal costs me about three hours of my day. The fact that I have to put all this energy into obtaining money that is already mine is ridiculous, but it will be well worth it in the end I hope.

Back home.

Double Egg Sandwich with Mayonnaise, Mustard, Tomato, and Sprouts. Salt n Vinegar Chips. Pomegranate Ade.

Leslie stops by with a handful of interesting articles from her family’s past. Flipping through a small calendar where her mother had written in each date block what she did that day, no elaboration but enough room to write things like “Bowling with Ralph” or “Called Ivan” or “Rode carousel – dinner at Shoney’s”. She stays for a long while as we playfully argue over the incorrect phrases like when people say, “at some point in time,” which is redundant or when people say, “centered around,” to which they mean “centered on”. Sharing some of our favorite children’s books. One book in particular called Where Did I Come From?, contains some comical one liner illustrations I just couldn’t resist scanning.

Settling down in my room with Coffee and Pumpkin Pie.

Tristan and James show up to rehearse their MxPx songs they’ll be performing for Show N Tell. James is at least 14 minutes late, which is out of character for him as he’s normally 15 minutes early anywhere.

Butter Lettuce and Cabbage Salad with Black Beans.

Tristan, James, and I head to Norfolk to scope out the happenings at The Wave. It’s hopping here with a diverse kind. A lot of familiar faces. Rachel and Wyatt are here. Kristin’s here. God, I haven’t seen her face in about half a year. A wave of mixed emotions comes over me as I watch her stride across the dance floor – she doesn’t look any different – those same looming eyes and pale creamy shoulders – wearing a seductive grin that seems permanent. Last summer we went at it pretty hard with an intense and unique relationship. At some point we exchange a quick awkward hi as we pass each other. Okay. I guess that’s the only appropriate thing to do. Part of me wanted to approach her and be a little friendlier but she’s glued at the hip to her friend Abby. This whole thing isn’t too much of a distraction. I enjoy myself on the dance floor eventually after two $1 PBR’s.

...

I hitch a ride with Rachel and Wyatt after closing time – I actually end up driving with Rachel in the passenger seat ranting on and on with her opinions and thoughts about her social placement and how she doesn’t give a fuck about what people think cause she’s “ALIVE”. I love her.

Me: “Rachel, have you ever thought about having your own radio station?”

I’m a part of a military mission to invade and take over a facility currently in possession by hostile forces. I’m standing on the roof and watch as the artillery and tanks across the way shoot away in slow motion. I move slowly but swiftly and dodge the missiles and bullets – some just brushing past my sleeve. Climbing up an arched ladder and swinging over the side. The vast cloudy skies surround me. I didn’t realize how tall this building actually is. Just one slip of the wrist and I fall into oblivion. I hang onto the metal rods of the ladder with a tight grip and dive in through a window to a room below. I’m safe. My comrades have already moved on. A soldier from the enemy’s side peeks his head from the roof. I reach my hand out and help pull him into safety. I don’t know why I helped him but he’s grateful. And at this point we’re all just trying to survive. The whole scene transforms...Now I’m riding in the back of a pick-up truck – still on the same mission, except this time we’re transporting special goods across country in some Muslim African community. The truck is speeding along a dirt road. A few black rebel forces somehow magically run at the same pace and attempt to loosen the trailer attached to the truck. I bang on the side windows of the truck and request a gun to defend myself. I’m handed a semi-automatic. I cock it immediately as if I know what I’m doing (it’s not like I’ve ever shot a gun before). I point at the little black guy who’s messing with a device on the side of the truck. I start yelling and he yells back. I shoot the gun at his face and chest but the hits are weak and they make a smacking sound. It seems this gun is useless, or maybe I’m just not using it correctly. The situation is getting progressively more stressful as more and more of the rebel forces hop on the truck and dismantle things. My gun seems to be worthless.

Exactly 49 days ago I mailed a small package to Russia for Aysena. She messages me that she got it today and she’s super happy about it. I sent her a copy of The Catcher in the Rye and A Wrinkle in Time, along with a homemade bookmark drawn with marker and a plastic jeweled ring. We’re both happy the package actually made it through the hell that is Russian Post. Russia is notorious for losing mail. Unfortunately, the iPhone that she bought and that I sent back in October still hasn’t been found. But at least this guy made it.

Ays: “oooo my goooosh!! I like you sooo much!!! yesyesyesyes!!! I got it, can you believe?!?? im soooo happpy !!! yeeeeeeeeees!!! I like you like you I like. you can't imagine how it helps me, how it makes me smile and makes my day better!!! you are the best! kissssss you everywhere !!!! lots of kisses to my sweet boy. I m like 5 y.o girl who s going to Disney land on her birthday.”

...

Ays: “I m so happy. on seventh cloud.”

Me: “not 'on seventh cloud'. hehe. you should say I'm on cloud nine right now.”

Ays: “which then in russian it will be on seventh. haha.”

I feel a strange combination of distance and closeness with Aysena. It’s a unique relationship it being long-distance. Part of me doesn’t feel obligated to her but another part does. If she ever wanted to move back to Virginia after she finishes school I would be okay with that. I would be okay actually attempting a real relationship with her. I don’t consider what’s happening right now real. It’s sort of a fantasy...two people holding onto an idea hoping it will come into fruition. We’ll see. For now, I have my life here. And I find it difficult at times to stay loyal to my original feelings for her during this physical absence.

Leftover White Fish with Salsa, Broccoli, Carrots, Onions, and Rice along with a Salad.

At the storage unit prepared to record some guitar only to discover there’s computer troubles once again. And it’s always these minor bumps that cause major setbacks. Whatever. I’m here so I mine as well just crunch out some other tunes.

Involved in a movie sequence that seems real enough. I knock on the bedroom door of my wife (for some reason she has her own room). A heavyset fairly ugly man answers the door and demands that I leave them alone. My wife seems to want the same. They shut the door in my face. Filled with rage and suspicion, but rightful suspicion because it’s understood they are having an affair, I shoot down the door with a shotgun. I step in to find the ugly fat man on the floor, not dead but injured from bullet wounds. Almost immediately my wife picks up a knife and threatens to cut me if I attempt to hurt him further or even talk to him.

“Okay. Okay,” I say with a little bit of nervousness. “I promise I won’t hurt him. Just let me talk to him.”

She’s pretty adamant about this and tosses some strange bow and arrow gun in my direction. It lands on the floor. I approach the man struggling below me. He reaches over into an opening in the floor and digs his hands under a pile of clothes in desperate search for something.

I mockingly ask, “What? Are you looking for your inhaler?”

I guess it’s understood he’s sick or has some kind of chronic mental illness.

Getting out of bed around 1:30 p.m.

Ezekiel 4:9 Toast with Butter. Coffee with Sugar and Milk.

A while ago Elisa, a former roommate, dipped out of Virginia beach without paying her rent to which she was in the hole over $1300 to me, and which I covered her on a monthly basis. I tried to be as reasonable as I could and now it’s escalated to the point where I’m forced to start a small claims case around it. The problem is she’s moved to San Diego. All I need is an address to get the summons served. Darren helps me investigate online in attempt to find out more information.

Me: “Man, this is fun. We should start a private investigator business.”

Lentil Spread Sandwich with Tomato and Mustard. Potato Chip Trio. Honey Green Tea.

James Graves walks into my room and says he’s going to take a nap in the living room until its time to go to Rick’s.

...

Leslie shows up. We make things in my room and brush up on the happenings over the past few days.

...

Learning a new word...

Boondoggle: (noun) work or activity that is wasteful or pointless but lends the appearance of having value. (verb) waste $/time on ‘such’ projects.

Feeling exceptionally jittery and an increase in appetite. My high intake of caffeine today is the culprit.

Me: “Dangit! I wish I could just enjoy one cup of coffee without feeling like this.”

Downstairs. Gathered at the table with Darren, James, and Leslie engaging in conversations about the semantics of sex.

White Fish with Salsa, Broccoli, Carrots, Onions, and Rice. Thai Tea.

And here I am at Rick’s Café with Elliott, Michelle, James, Tristan, Darren, and Leslie. Puns seem to be the theme of the night. A game of Props – taking objects from the table and figuring out different ideas each can be used. This induces lots of laughter.

Enjoying a slice of Apple Pie.

Tristan: “When I was a kid it was all tornado drills and social studies.”

Back home. Researching.

Going for a run around the neighborhood – lurking the streets of Hilltop with classical ringing in my ears.

I can’t put my finger on any details of my surroundings except that there’s this lady named Khonda and I keep saying to her what I think is something so profound: “The only way to be nonjudgmental is by seeing everyone as equal.”

It’s earlier than usual and I feel I’ve received a good amount of sleep but I just can’t seem to pull myself out of the bed. I doze off until at least 1:12 p.m.

For a few weeks now Stephanie said she was writing me a letter. Here it is by my doorstep inside a sparkly ghost bag along with a bottle of zinfandel. The smell of nail polish fills my nostrils while reading...

Strawberry Toaster Pastries. Orange Juice.

While running errands I observe a volunteer rescue ambulance take advantage of his infrared traffic light changer just to make a leisurely right hand turn. Wow. If only I had one of those. I’d be king of this town.

Attempting to fix my car’s stereo.

Grilled Cheese with Tomato and Hummus. Potato Chip Trio. Honey Green Tea.

Watching Bellflower (2011).

We’ve officially designated all residents of our house to take on particular chores and cleaning duties. So now it’s not the sole responsibility of one person like myself to do everyone’s dishes or clean the bathrooms. Now each one of us cleans up after themselves and we divvy up bathroom duties monthly. I take the first bathroom cleaning shift and boy is it a lengthy endeavor but it’s well worth it. I’ve successfully scrubbed off the grime and mold from areas that probably haven’t been touched in ages.

Exercising and learning Russian.

Going for a run around the neighborhood.

Spaghetti with Peppers, Onions, Mushrooms, and Tomato Sauce. Cabbage and Lettuce Salad. Thai Tea.

At the storage unit recording some acoustic guitar tracks.

Chocolate Chip Cookies with Milk.

Attempt to sleep at 4:30 a.m. but I’m having a terrible time actually achieving sleep mode because my brain is cluttered with ambitious thoughts and plans and worries.

A big old grey house with thirteen rooms. It’s understood that I’m a girl. I’m given a tour of the whole house in all its vastness. I’m offered to stay here for $80 a month but I have to shack up with a stranger and share a small space.

Slumping out of bed immediately at 11:20 a.m. Gotta be at work in ten minutes.

Strawberry Toaster Pastries. Orange Juice.

All day shift at China Wok.

Oh my goodness...it’s beautiful outside...the sunshine pressing down on my bare face. Why do I have to be working on such a gorgeous day? I prefer my work shifts to be bleak and dreary.

Half a Lentil Spread Sandwich with Sprouts. Five Guys French Fries. Honey Green Tea.

The darkness comes early as usual around 5 o’clock. The fresh night breeze feels good through my windows.

Out of nowhere I get a call from Rachel. All I can hear on the other end is a few sporadic sobs and sniffles.

Me: “Rachel?”

More sobs.

Me: “Rachel, what’s going on?”

She eventually speaks up and I find that its nothing in particular but everything all at once that’s overwhelmed her...this life...her life...the loss of life...the negative curses that drive her into psychological meltdown. I’ve known of her existence since she was fifteen and here she is at twenty-one with a handful of history. She’s like a younger sister to me, sometimes reaching out to her big brother for comfort and solace. I stay on the line and listen closely to all the troubles of her mind but unfortunately my work interferes.

Me: “Rachel, don’t underestimate your friends. We’re all here for you and we love you.”

Grabbing a Thai Tea from Bangkok Garden to keep me from drowning in a sea of mundane.

Off work and back home.

Hot and Sour Soup with Broccoli and Rice.

Watching Daydream Nation (2010).

Fortune cookie says, “If I bring forth what is inside me, what I bring forth will save me.”

Doing nothing really except feeling exceptionally tired.

Exploring a rundown part of town where some sort of arts festival is in progress. Walking by jewelry artisans with their little stands. A rugged man with dreads recognizes my displacement out here in this part of town and asks, “What is your kind doing around here?” I don’t bother talking to him and I continue on my path. I meet up with my mother.

Waking up earlier with an agenda at 11 a.m.

...

Going for a short jog around the neighborhood – it’s the perfect weather for this, just the right ratio of sunshine and clouds, just the right amount of breeze.

Strawberry Toaster Pastries. Orange Juice.

All day shift at China Wok.

Lentil Spread Sandwich with Tomato. Potato Chip Trio. Honey Green Tea.

During the down time at work I vigorously snap the peas while losing fake money at poker on my phone.

Business picks up drastically towards the early evening.

Anthony texts me a quote from that book, The Book of Disquiet, “My soul is a hidden orchestra; I know not what instruments, what fiddlestrings and harps, drums and tambours I sound and clash inside myself. All I hear is the symphony.

Delivering an order to Terrace Avenue. I remember delivering here before but it was some time ago. I knock for a straight ten minutes, attempt to call the customer, and even toss a few pebbles at the second floor window, but no answer. Something feels strange about this. There’s a car parked in the driveway and I can see a few lights on in the house. I wait it out another ten minutes hoping the guy maybe just fell asleep or was stuck on the toilet or something. I call my boss and explain the situation. She tells me to come back.

...

It’s been at least an hour or so. I decide to call 9-1-1 just in case. I mean what if this guy passed out or something bad happened to him inside his house. I might as well be saving his life.

Vegetable Lo Mein.

Off work.

As soon as I get home I’m told the internet’s been down since 4 o’clock. I troubleshoot it myself and stay on the phone with a nice lady representative at Cox named Yvonne. Unfortunately nothing gets resolved and it’s going to require a technician, but of course that won’t happen until tomorrow. So this house will be without the internet over night. Oh no. What ever shall we do?

...

Anthony barges into my room, “So are you ready?”

Me: “For what?”

Anthony: “To go to the Friends School!”

Me: “Dude I just got off work and I had to deal with bullshit for 30 minutes. I just wanna sit here, without internet, alone, in the dark first.”

...

I decide to dummy check the cords later and magically the internet starts working again. No chance of disconnection.

Enjoying five Chocolate Chip Cookies with Milk over Daydream Nation (2010).

It’s after 1:30 a.m. but never too late for a basketball date. Anthony and I grab two basketballs and shoot around on the Friends School courts. One hoop is missing bolts and tilts to the left; the other is mounted in upside down. We choose the latter. We had been talking about reconnecting for a while now and we’re finally doing it, and at our favorite spot. Hoop dreams. Our dreams. Our visions. Bouncing the ball persistently against the concrete while we juggle question marks. Recent tragic events have sparked intense retrospection about the direction of our lives. We seek clarity. We psychoanalyze the characters in our lives. We don’t ever stop trying to understand.

...

Anthony: “Cause I believe that there is transformative powers in love. And I believe that there are healing powers and restorative powers that love can bring about. How would you feel if...let’s say five years down the road you meet her and you can just look at her face...you can tell something inside her has changed.”

Me: “But honestly, dude. I just don’t see her changing ever. In all the years that I’ve known her even the time that I spent apart from her hoping that she might get the drift. She still doesn’t get it. She’ll always, always hold things against me.”

...

Talking about the time frame when single men and women who are hitting their 30’s feel that mild pressure of getting married or settling down.

Anthony: “I think at some point when the norm is what you are not it definitely makes you question what you are doing.”

...

Me: “I think for all of us we kinda look at our family life and what is it about my family life that was wrong and what can I avoid next time? I mean I turned out alright but that was only because I had a really awesome mom and my dad stuck around.”

Anthony: “And you know the thing that really scares me the most though is that every generation says these things and so every generation gets it wrong a little bit.”

Me: “When do we get it completely right?”

Anthony: “Yeah. And I don’t think we ever do...but I’ve seen parents raise their kids the way that I would like. I’ve seen examples...”

...

Anthony: “There’s still so much more left. Think about it. Even you. You’re almost ten years older than me...in theory only a third of your life or have only finished a third of the trip. Think about that. And that’s exciting. That’s scary. That’s sad. It’s fun. It’s hopeful. It’s—it’s all those things.”

...

Taking the long way back to the house – passing behind the Lutheran church. I noticed a man sleeping soundly under a blanket in the thick of the leaves.

Me: “Hey did you catch that homeless man back there?”

Anthony replies, “He wasn’t homeless.”

...

We pause in front of the new colossal power lines they just installed this past year. Looking further you can see all the other lines connected. They’re rust-colored and ominous looking.

Anthony: “It makes me think of like...some European country a little bit after a war and they just left a bunch of stuff up but didn’t tear it down yet and they’re still rebuilding."

Me: “Yeah. I know"

Anthony: “It was part of the war and we’re living with the remains.”

Me: “Oh we definitely had a war here. [Ha]”

He smiles and says, “I missed that one.”

Me: “The War of 2012.”

I’m being escorted through a jungle, which is understood to be located somewhere near the outer banks of North Carolina even though that doesn’t make any sense. We stop to examine a thorn bush and notice two watchers across a field. They intend on shooting us with bow and arrows. My guide seems confident that we can avoid danger. We continue moving but at a swift pace. Everything around us is so vibrant and lush – admiring the whole scenery...tranquil...the calm shore break – dipping my feet in – the idea of being on the edge of the country is frightening.

Waking up at 11:08 a.m.

Strawberry Toaster Pastries. Orange Juice.

All day shift at China Wok.

It’s a beautiful sunny day out, beautiful enough for the kids to be playing on the streets.

Lentil Spread Sandwich with Tomato. Salt n Vinegar Chips. Honey Green Tea.

The deliveries pick up around 4 p.m. and it’s pretty much non-stop from there. I attempt to learn Russian while driving. No pressing thoughts except for the usual stress on the road.

The cold night invades the senses.

Tofu with Broccoli, Onions, Carrots, and Rice in Garlic Sauce.

Off work and back home. Jonathon’s funeral was today. Unfortunately I had to miss it because of work. But all the kids who attended are here bumbling drunkenly about the house. I’m not enthused. This place will become a zoo. I lock myself in my room and all I can hear is the constant thumping from the staircase and the banging on doors, mostly on Kevin’s door as most everyone gets a kick out of picking on him.

Chilling out in my room – playing poker. I’ve got absolutely no energy left.

I’m off to bed early at 2:30 a.m.
