I’m being held hostage in my bed by a man that simply hates me. He lives down the hall from me in this big house. There’s an understood history between us from when I was younger. He’s always lived in this house and ever since I was born he’s held an uncalled for animosity for my existence. The severity of his hateful actions have increased over time. He used to pick on me and make me feel stupid and second rate. Now he’s got me at knifepoint in bed. One of the knives is double bladed and resembles a big kitchen knife. I try to protect myself with my hands and keep pushing his knives away. But he’s persistent on destroying me. The scene kind of fades but continues in various scenarios. I’m stuck. Now I’m running along a pier on the side of the house. I’ve pushed him off the edge onto the ground below. I hop over his body. He’s still alive. I dive into the lake and swim at a stealth level to avoid being punctured by his flying knives.

▬ ○ ☼ ○ ▬

I wake up or at least I think I do. I see familiar objects from my bedroom. The fan blowing. The desk. The dresser. But I can’t move my body. I attempt opening my mouth but the muscles won’t budge. I can barely utter a noise from my throat. My eyes are open. I’m half awake half dreaming. The fear of my enemy still clouds my mind. I hear the ruffling of plastic bags behind me but I can’t turn around to look. I’m afraid to. Eventually I drift back into the dream and finish the scene.

Waking up a little disoriented at 11:10 a.m.

White Peaches. Figs. Orange Juice.

All day shift at China Wok.

Tuna Salad Sandwich with Tomato. Five Guys French Fries. Honey Green Tea.

[Text message]

Kristin: “You ok?”

Me: “I’m okay. are you ok?”

Kristin: “Yeah. I saw a side of you I haven’t seen last night. It was nice and comforting. It made me realize you are not as big of an ass as I thought. What brought that on?”

Me: “interesting. how did I portray the opposite of an asshole?”

Kristin: “I don’t know you were just very genuine and you got soft. Something I really appreciate. I felt good after our conversation despite the fact that things didn’t work out.”

Me: “I told you I’m very sentimental. and I can be very tender and soft. do you feel somewhat resolved?”

Kristin: “Yeah, it’s a shame. I do. I feel like I can move on and I have completed this. But it still sucks.”

...

Kristin: “When I went to the wave it was all men and they swarmed over me and tried to talk and dance with me and I was unenthused.”

Me: “I can envision that scene. you know...our story would make a great novel or movie...”

The storm hovers overhead and the rain pours at various volumes. I still don’t have AC so the windows are fogging up easily. Listening to 99.3 FM and letting the 1920’s spirit create the soundtrack to this dreary day. A song called “Moon River” chimes in and it pulls on my heartstrings...

Delivering an order to Corning court. The lady was pregnant this past year and finally had the baby.

Her: “I finally had her.”

Me: “I know I see! Congratulations. What’s her name?”

Her: “Lyric.”

Me: “Lyric as in L-Y-R-I-C?”

Her: “Yup.”

Me: “That is a cool name.”

Talking with Kristin on the phone here and there.

Me: “Don’t you think it’s kind of strange that anytime we have a conversation or see each other it’s raining and storming?”

The conversation is becoming stressful and so is the drive. I haven’t paid any mind to my low gas tank but it’s too late. The car starts sputtering and stalls on Birdneck road. I’m not but 200 feet from the gas station so I jump out and push the car myself. A man behind me offers a helping hand and together we succeed in pushing it up to the pump. Close call. I fill up and continue making deliveries like it never happened.

...

My interaction with Kristin ended abruptly and nothing feels good about the situation. We’ve been trying to establish a closure that feels comfortable.

Slurping down some Vegetable Lo Mein while I finish my last delivery of the day.

Fortune cookie says, “Happy news is on its way to you.”

Home finally. Enjoying a Pilsner and catching up on my thoughts and doing a few chores.

Earlier Tara requested if we could cuddle again soon. I agreed. She comes over a little after 12:30 a.m. While putting my clean clothes away we chat and catch up.

...

We watch Immortals (2011) together. It’s over an hour and a half of thrilling dreamy action packed visuals. Afterwards we sprawl out on the bed and cuddle...

Me: “This is what you came here to do.”

She giggles in response. Of course it progresses into something more. Sometimes the word cuddle can be interchangeable with the word sex. After all the mental stress I experienced today this is what I’m drawn to. I needed it despite how cheap it felt, even more so this time than the last two. I need to be honest with myself and go ahead and say I don’t feel attracted to her and the connection isn’t something phenomenal. That’s not to say there’s anything lacking with the sexual activity. In contrast she’s such a calm and low-key presence too, which is refreshing. But I should recognize it for what it is: lovemaking with somebody I don’t know. My affairs feel fractured as of late. I’m lost with an aimless drive.

Sleep sometime after 4 a.m.

Yesterday in waking life Anthony told me he ran into Raven in Hilltop. Apparently she was here for the day for a tattoo appointment. My dream continues as such with this setting. It’s yesterday. And somehow Raven is in my bedroom now visiting me. It feels awkward at first but I manage to break the ice...

Me: “I just want to say...um...a lot of time has passed...and I’m okay. Everything’s okay.”

She has that blank smiley face just as I remember. I reach in for a hug and she leans into me without hesitation. It’s such a complete feeling hug. I allow a light clasp of my arms and then gradually squeeze. Everything is resolved in this moment. We let go but she gives the impression she wants more and leans her face into mine. We kiss. But our bottom lips are stuck together naturally from the lack of moistness. I make a joke about it. We pursue further. I realize my bedroom door is open and walk over to inspect. Anthony, Darren, and others catch me from the hallway. Cases for musical instruments are blocking the way for me to close the door. I kick them to the side enough to shut it. Then back to the passionate scene awaiting me. Inside I’m confused at why she’s being so seductive. Everything is so detailed. Her hair. Her stomach. Her skin. Her legs. Part of me knows I’m dreaming so I don’t ask questions. I reach under and pleasure her with my fingers. I’m experiencing such an ecstatic high and so is she.

Waking up around 1 p.m.

Apricots.

Running some errands and picking up two pounds of shrimp and a fifth for Whiskey Rob.

Grilled Cheese with Tomato on a Bagel. Potato Chip Trio. Pomegranate Cherry Ade.

Watching Rampart (2011).

I’ve been in such a tender state the past few days. I find myself missing substantially, not anyone in particular, just missing. I feel empty, emotionally and spiritually.

The sky cracks open to a torrential down pour of rain. Traffic is slow on the road as Hilltop floods.

...

At the storage unit rehearsing a few songs.

At College Park All Ages, which is merely a spacey room inside a church. No AC but the fans are whirling and the fresh rain smell permeating the air. Maybe about eleven people are here for the show. This girl Alicia just started booking through this place. A girl with an acoustic guitar under the moniker of Brighter Lights goes on first with some emo pop. Then I, Musicplayer, perform a set with my acoustic – some originals and some covers. It goes over well. I notice Kristin in the audience. I wasn’t expecting to see her but it’s a pleasant surprise. Sharing Cokes and Freeze Pops. Cat Be Damned perform last with their 90’s influenced Modest Mouse style songs.

Afterwards Kristin and I meet at the Waffle House that Becca and I usually meet at. It’s right down the street from the venue. I even invited Becca to join but she had work drama. Sitting down at the usual booth. Our friendly restaurant employees and The Professor nearby.

Ordering Scrambled Eggs with a Biscuit, a Waffle, and Coffee.

Most of Becca and I’s favorite Waffle House characters are here.

...

Kristin makes fun of me and my daily routine, “Here’s Robert. Robert’s like, Hey I work at China Wok and I just wanna let you know that I pretty much stay up till early in the morning every night and I won’t wake up on my days off till 2. That’s when my day starts but I have to wake up at 11 to be at work at 11:30. It’s really fricken early. Um, excuse me you sound like you’re still living my teenage high school dream.”

I laugh hysterically in response. I show her the picture I just took.

Her: “I look horrified.”

...

We get into a discussion on image and the styles we choose to associate with in our dress...

Her: “I’ve always wanted to be able to dress a certain way to reflect who I am. I just never had the balls to just be who I wanted to be and dress how I wanted to be and now I do.”

Me: “And this is it.”

Her: “Yeah.”

Me: “What about me? How does the way I dress tell you about who I am?”

Her: “You look like you’re into an alternative image. You’re not buying into this mainstream like I have to be wearing what the GQ catalog tells me I need to wear to appeal to women. You’re very take me as I am like I’m not trying to impress you.”

...

Talking about my relational perspectives that were shaped from former relationships...

Her: “You had a lot of time to grow and you were in a really bad situation and part of me just thinks that you’re used to manipulation. You’re used to you being a puppet. I just think that you maybe are like brainwashed that like that’s how everybody’s gonna be.”

Me: “Yeah I need to get out of that mindset. I think maybe psychologically I might see it that way for sure.”

Her: “It’s sad.”

Me: “I think you’re right. I am used to that, somebody manipulating me.”

...

We get into a coolheaded version of our familiar conversation on the definition of the connection between each other.

Her: “I’m very frustrated with the fact that I can’t walk away that I’m having difficulty walking away.”

Me: “I’m sorry I’m making it difficult.”

Her: “My thing is this right now I just want to invest my emotions into you cause that’s what my heart feels led to do and I think I have to control that. I think I can’t do that because I would be cheating myself out of what my heart was gonna do and the only way to regain all my emotions so...and maybe I am old fashion. Maybe I’m all about finding that one person...”

Me: “Maybe you’re at that stage in your life.”

Her: “I think it’s cheating myself and cheating who ever would come into my life that I continue to be friends with you cause that little piece that I gave to you was never a friend piece to begin with.”

...

Her: “I felt like on top of the world in the beginning.”

...

There’s a social conflict of interests.

Her: “I think you’re getting your fulfillment of people already and you don’t need a significant other to fulfill your human contact.”

...

An upsetting feeling starts to surge in her...

Her: “I feel soooo used. I’m like disposable to you. I’m like a balled up piece of paper and when you decide that you wanna take it out of the trash you just like unravel it and say, it’s time for Kristin time, and then you just close it back up and toss it back when you need alone time.”

...

Her: “I really want you to...kind of just like forget about me for a while. And I want you to go out and do what you want and I’m gonna do what I want. I just think if we’re meant to act on something in the future it’ll happen but it’ll happen for a reason. I just think for now its not meant to be. I just don’t think any type of relationship is appropriate to have with you right now.”

We migrate outside and she hops into the driver’s seat of her car. The door still open. I kneel down and reflect...

Me: “I’m sorry. I’m just sorry that you have to feel this way and that I’m the reason for it. I’m sorry that I am the way I am. I guess I shouldn’t apologize for being who I am but at the same time my decisions are causing some pain for you. I do think you are valuable and I do think you’re worth it. I just have a lot of things I need to figure out on my own. And I’m sorry for starting something that I couldn’t finish. I wasn’t thinking about that. I was just really excited.”

Her: “Why were you excited?”

Me: “I don’t know. I was just excited about you. You’re a deep person. It’s the kind of person that I want to be involved with cause I’m a deep person too. But I think I need to cool off. I do understand what’s going on and I understand what you’re feeling.”

Her: “I’m not gonna let it make me feel less desirable...less wanted...less valuable.”

Me: “Never. Never feel that way. Of course.”

...

Me: “I like you. I like your personality. You make me laugh constantly...in a good way.”

Her: “Yeah well I do that. I make people laugh.”

Me: “And you’re sweet.”

...

Her: “If this is making you sad then why are you inflicting pain on yourself?”

Me: “Cause I feel like it’s something I have to do.”

...

I try to give a hug but she refuses and says one last thing...

Her: “All you have to do is tell me that I’m worth it and you wanna be with me and that you wanna be with me despite the fact that you need time to yourself and if I could find a way to work you into letting you have time to yourself but no you’re not ready for that so yeah, no contact. And probably most likely gonna reach a point where I’m just not attracted to you anymore. Those feelings are gonna fade away.”

Me: “Okay.”

She shuts the door and that’s it.

Back home.

Plums.

The kids are getting LIVE in the house, but it’s nothing I can’t tolerate. I lay down the law by calling a curfew for 3 a.m. It works and I successfully kick everyone out.

...

Later, Elisa has a few friends sleeping over downstairs. Beverly Hills Cop 3 on the TV tower. I hang out for a little bit.

Traveling with a group of people. It’s understood we’re super heroes of some kind, or maybe just ordinary humans with unique abilities. Another team has challenged us in a battle. It’s not an ordinary battle where there’s hand-to-hand combat but rather a game of wits. It’s almost abstract. At one point I gain a lot of confidence in my mind and gather my team and we pursue a victory. We scramble into our SUV vehicle and leave the scene.

▬ ○ ☼

Waking up sometime around 1 p.m.

Cinnamon Oatmeal with Brown Sugar, Raisins, and Milk. Orange Juice.

Heading over to the guy on Sykes avenue who put my car back together after the accident. He’s replacing the hood latch. It’s taking a little while. In the meantime I sit in my car in the hot sun waiting...and having an unsettling text conversation with Kristin.

Double Egg Sandwich with Mayonnaise and Tomato. Salt n Vinegar Chips. Lemonade.

I grab Anthony and he joins me for an odd job that Whiskey Rob asked me to do: clean house. We drive over to his house near Shore drive.

Comments in reference to the hottest day.

Anthony: “Today’s a good day to be sticky!”

...

Anthony: “Phew. It’s hot, yo. I can’t imagine outdoor sex right now.”

Then, he corrects himself, “Well I can cause I said it but...”

Me: “That’s true.”

...

We arrive. Of course I knew what to expect cause I’ve seen the inside of his place before. He has a roach problem. I start with the kitchen while Anthony helps organize the living room. I feel like I’m on the movie set for Joe’s Apartment (1996). These roaches are everywhere.

...

My head is littered with thoughts of little roach creatures scurrying...I’m beat. I need to decompress. We settle up the pay and leave but not after a few nostalgic life stories given by Rob.

...

In reaction to the long-winded conversations that Rob gave I comment, “I can’t take too much of that for too long.”

Anthony: “You have a fragile psyche.”

Me: “That’s true.”

Black Bean Spinach and Corn Salad. Apple Fritter Bread.

Watching Rampart (2011).

At the storage unit practicing a set for a show I’m doing tomorrow.

Feeling strangely alone. Darren and Devon took off for a camping trip in Blacksburg. Anthony spontaneously decides to go somewhere for the weekend. Kevin’s not home. I feel myself drawn to the old...the comfortable...feeling nostalgic. I’m missing. The house doesn’t seem active. And no doubt I’m grateful. Peace and quiet is gold to me. But it’s not normal. As well I’m romantically alone...by choice of course. And here I am...all alone.

Zooming in on a map of some unknown European city. Perspective getting closer and closer. Now I’m walking down the street with Erica, my roommate, but she looks different and she’s wearing a long dress with a belt mid-waist that skirts her ankles. A guy friend of hers passes by and says, “I think you’re a ten!” We move along and reach the corner of an intersection.
Me: “I think that kid likes you. He thinks you’re a ten.”
Her: “Well, I think he’s a seven.”
In response I attempt to apologize about last night and the ruckus that ensued throughout the house.

Waking up ten minutes before noon.

I find a note left on the counter in the kitchen written from the couch surfer from last night. He includes a display of a toothpick balancing an interlocked fork and spoon on top of a wine glass.

Friends,
May the wind be always at your back. I hate goodbye so simply, until we meet again.
- Ethan (Surfer, Summer 2012)

Apricots.

Meeting my Aunt Pansy and her husband at Waterman’s on 5th street for lunch. They invited me out a few days ago. Out on the back patio, the summer beach scene surrounding us. Catching up on family news and life news. Earlier they met a Turkish fellow selling umbrellas out on the sand. They felt bad for him and bought him a sandwich as a gift. I admire the fake diamond piece slotted in the headphone jack of her smartphone.

Pansy: “Ain’t that cute? I love the bling.”

Me: “Ha. Women love accessories...excessively.”

Being as well off as they are they pay for my Hummus Wrap with French Fries and a Mr. Pibb and also cover the tip for the valet parking.

Back home.

Organizing. Cleaning up.

Art stops by to help troubleshoot restoring a laptop that my bosses at China Wok wanted fixed.

Apple Fritter Toast. Figs. Plum.

Running an errand for Whiskey Rob.

At home. James Graves pops in after getting a massage over at Leisa’s. A while back I had a Russian couch surfer message me about things to do in Virginia Beach. She came to a Show N Tell a few months ago. James and I drive over and scoop her up from Baltic avenue. Aysena is her name. We make food and enjoy dinner conversation.

Aysena: “You have a beautiful house.”

Black Bean Salad with Mushrooms, Broccoli, Zucchini, Squash, Onions, and Rice.

She impresses us with her sight-reading skills on the piano. I return the favor by playing most of the Beethoven pieces I know.

Poker night is upon us and the guys start to trickle in. Tristan, Dustin, James, Calum, Art, Darren, and I. We start up the game and we all know the commitment that’s involved at this point: at least two or more hours of our precious time.

Art: “The more you play the more you’re losing.”

Me: “The more you play the more you determine your hand.”

James: “In the bathroom right?”

[Haha]

Darren: “I determine my hand between the sheets.”

...

Darren always finds a reason to use the fact that I was an only child against me, or to explain my behavior, “I was talking about you at work today. I was telling them that my friend’s nearly 50 years old and you can tell he was an only child. Like that shit is stuck with him through his mid-life crisis and you can still tell he’s an only child.”

...

Art asks Dustin to trade him some black chips, “Hey I’ll trade you some blacks.”

Tristan, being a the black person that he is, declares, “We don’t do that anymore.”

[Shared laughter]

...

Darren: “Look at that. I’m not even gonna look at my cards cause I’m a man living on the edge. I didn’t grow this mustache for anything.”

Me: “But that soul patch keeps you in check.”

...

Dustin attempts to explain himself when he raises a particular bet, “It’s not being a douche. It’s just being strategy.”

[Haha] We all realize the error in his statement because obviously one cannot BE strategy. Darren’s the first to poke fun, “It’s just being strategy? Being strategy! You have a masterful control of the English language. I AM strategy! I am an abstract term! I define it! I’m the physical manifestation of strategy.”

Dustin: “Whatever.”

...

It’s over. Art wins. Goodnight.

With Rusty and a female friend of ours. We’re about to go play some kind of game out in the driveway. Passing by this little field I notice a shiny nickel lying on the edge of the grass. I bend down to pick it up and notice another one maybe twelve inches away. I continue in this manner and realize there’s a whole trail of nickels and sometimes quarters leading to what I understand to be a treasure spot with something special buried underground. Someone set this up for kicks in hopes another person would follow along. I’ve become that person.

▬ ○ ☼

Waking up late in the afternoon. It’s 1:47 p.m.

Apricots and a Plum.

Errands.

Egg Sandwich with Mayonnaise and Tomato. Tortilla Chips with Fresh Guacamole. Honey Green Tea.

Banana.

Watching 44 inch Chest (2009).

I choose to live my life without entanglements, without turmoil. Your capacity to love leaves you vulnerable. Now you should be proud of that.

Anthony and I corral a group for basketball at sunset on the courts by Rick’s Café. Anthony and I roll up blaring Tupac’s “That’s the Way It Is” on the stereo. It’s Skippy and James Graves versus Anthony and I. The sweat waterfalls pour off our bodies. Some of us sport jerseys picked up from the thrift store that say Lady Hustlers. A competitive match for sure, ending with a 10 to 9 win for my team.

...

Meeting up at the thrift store where Elliott is about to get off. We wait around outside, Anthony, Skippy, and I. Entertaining ourselves with a water pump gun...

We grab Elliott and head to the basketball hoop in Latitudes behind the Target. It’s dark now but Skippy’s headlights serve as good lighting. Another two-on-two game, this time with Elliott. 10 to 7 win for Skippy and I. Elliott pulls out this new invention of his that includes two skateboards attached to a skin board. He demonstrates and allows me to ride it.

Back at the house.

Barbecue Garlic Salmon with Broccoli, Mushrooms, Onions, and Rice.

The whole LIVE crew is back together again. Things are rowdy and chaotic. Running up and down the stairs. Most of the guy’s shirts come off, including mine. The antics against Kevin ensue. He’s our clown. A box full of onions being thrown everywhere – acrylic paint used as a senseless prank. Some would call the way we act monkey-like and immature. But there’s a degree of stability amongst the ruckus and rambunctious behavior, an animalistic link that binds us all together. We’re brothers and sisters. I may not have as much angst as the others but I can document it and live through it.

While settling down in my computer chair reading and writing I hear a loud bang come from the hallway. I open the door at the same time Darren does. The carpet is soaked from tossed water balloons. It’s after 3 a.m. and I made clear to the hooligans downstairs to lay low because the rest of the house was trying to sleep. Obviously that wasn’t clear enough. The culprits already darted out the front door and scrammed. But I go on an angry rant to Anthony and Tristan who had nothing to do with the recent incident. Anthony and I continue a cool headed reflection in the kitchen about tonight on how a precedent has already been set that opens the floor for people of this manner to think it’s okay to behave like so.

...

Later Anthony sends me an email as an after thought. He always has a way with words and knows how to describe exactly what I see in my head...

...In every other corner of their lives they see the walls of "adulthood" closing in and on the days when those walls don't look depressing, they can look downright hellish. There is a frustration, an uncertainty and an angst drowning so much of their beings in a muddled grey.  Their actions, this destruction, is their last little spot of rebellion sunshine. It pulses through their veins and proves to them that they're still alive and can control some aspect of the fight. Plus sometimes you just want to fuck shit up. You know the feeling. I know you do because I've been there with you when you've just wanted to destroy things...

My late night thoughts in bed are littered with deprivation and wanting. I think about my former lovers, especially Margot. But I wouldn’t dare reach out to her. That would be detrimental. I’m doing just fine on my own. Let me continue down this path of emotional independence.

Sleep shortly after 5 a.m.

[i]

11:10 a.m. arising from slumber.

Apricots. Figs. Orange Juice.

All day shift at China Wok.

Coconut Water is my new favorite thirst quencher.

The heat is unbearable, however I’ve become immune to the hot days and I’ll be forever immune to no AC in my car.

The lunch rush is steady.

Grilled Cheese with Tomato on a Bagel. Salt n Vinegar Chips. Honey Green Tea.

When stopping by the house I saw that we received a noncompliance notice from the warlords of Chanticleer claiming that we violated our lease agreement for “Undesirable behavior: noise violation, trash not being disposed of properly, fireworks, disturbing neighbors.” Of course this all is in regards to the Show N Tell shenanigans the other night. In other words this was a warning. I text Anthony...

Me: “no matter where we live as a community I always feel like unwanted black sheep of the neighborhood.”

On the down time at the restaurant I read Emerson’s essay called “The Transcendentalist”. Anthony reminded me of him Saturday and I felt lead to pull out his writing again. It’s so solid and on point. I feel a new inspiration to submerse myself into these kinds of thoughts. It’s encouraging because I can identify so naturally.

Cadbury Chocolate Bar.

Off work.

Shrimp Toast. Spring Rolls. Hot and Sour Soup. Trader Joe’s Summer Brew.

I call up Becca and see if we can meet up to do my hair and in return I can buy her a meal at Waffle House. She accepts. I drive to Greenbrier Mall. It’s a little before midnight so we have to kind of break in, but she knows the unlocked doors near Cinema Café and it’s not that out of the ordinary because she works at a salon inside. It’s just us and the security guards inside the mall. While cutting my hair...

Me: “Yeah I’ve been sexually deprived but its okay. I’ve been reading Emerson lately.”

Her: “So wait you’ve been jacking off to Emerson?”

[Haha]

Me: “Well, no. But actually you totally could. I mean just listen to this...” I pull out the book and read aloud one sentence, “So many promising youths, and never a finished man!”

...

Getting rid of the split ends and buzzing the sides and back. It’s been a few months since I’ve hung out with Becca. I continue talking about some of my recent revelations.

Me: “I’m trying to feed my intellect and spirit rather than the flesh in hopes the flesh will lose its appetite.”

...

We finish up and head over to the Waffle House on Indian River road. We settle down in our usual booth in the corner. The old man whom we’ve adoringly called The Professor is here of course. He never fails to be present. We make some assumptions about his life like maybe his home situation isn’t good. Maybe he’s a hoarder and maybe he doesn’t have the means to cook in the kitchen. He just sits there at the booth in the other corner reading his novels.

Our waiter provides us with the Coffee and according to Becca magically releases the cream cups from his hand. She’s mildly entertained by this.

Her: “I can’t tell if he’s like slow or just acting cute.”

Me: “Yeah there is a difference between acting cute or awkwardly slow. Well look at him. I think he’s cute.”

We both chuckle.

Her: “I think you’re right. You remind me of Jerry Seinfeld so much.”

[Haha]

...

I notice a bulky collection of key ring reward cards on her key chain.

Me: “Oh my gosh Becca! Why do you have all of these?”

I order a Waffle. She pushes the jalapenos she ordered with her meal off to the side of the plate.

Me: “Okay. You ordered jalapenos.”

Her: “I know. It’s too much. You want ‘em?”
Me: “No. What am I gonna—I’m not just gonna eat jalapenos. I don’t even have eggs. I don’t have toast. Or po-TA-TOES!”

She bursts out in laughter and so do I.

Me: “Why are we laughing?”

Her: “Cause of Seinfeld.”

Me: “Yeah it’s a Seinfeld thing for sure.”

...

We begin talking about how normal it was for men back in the day to marry young girls. Child brides. She talks about her new side job cleaning trailer homes in Richmond.

...

An energetic chatty woman walks in with an obvious wig and sunglasses on. She introduces herself at our booth. I offer her a fig.

Her: “Where do these come from, like Lebanon or something?”

Me: “No. It comes from California.”

And then she takes over the conversation with her own experiences. Becca and I just listen...

Her: “I just come here a lot. I’m a regular but I don’t want my picture taken cause I’m all incognito. Maybe I will when I’m like really different. I’ll put a purple wig on then I’ll get my picture taken. One time when I was a little kid I had a purple wig on and they took my picture and they put it in Life magazine. My mom’s like ‘You’re famous!’”

Back home. It’s late. I take a shower and get rid of the hot sticky residue on my skin from the past two days and wash my fresh haircut.

Sleep a little after 4 a.m.

Alarm goes off at 11:35 a.m. Dragging out of bed.

Orange Juice.

All day shift at China Wok.

For the first two hours not one single order. I find time to take a trip to Trader Joe’s for some groceries.

Figs and a Plum.

Egg Salad Sandwich with Tomato. Salt n Vinegar Chips. Honey Green Tea.

The day continues. The orders pick up.

Coconut Water.

I attempt to eat a Chocolate Bar but it has gone soft and more so than I expected – the chocolate melting inside the foil as I squeeze out its Belgian goodness. Why am I so desperate for this?

Delivering an order to Allendale court. I overhear the guy behind the door, “Calm down Max! Or I’ll have them cook you.”

He opens up and I react, “We don’t cook dog, sir.”

Guy: “Oh I know but it was a funny thing to say to my dog.”

The night continues. Tips are mediocre.

Off work at a decent hour.

Tofu with Onions, Broccoli, Snow Peas, and Rice in Garlic Sauce. Trader Joe’s Summer Brew.

Watching Transformers: Dark of the Mood (2011).

Fortune cookie says, “Good advice jars the ear.”

Troubleshooting a laptop from China Wok.

Sifting through some of Emerson’s writings.

[i]

Waking up thirty minutes late for work. It’s no big deal.

Orange Juice.

All day shift at China Wok.

Egg Salad Sandwich with Tomato. Five Guys French Fries with Ketchup. Honey Oolong Tea.

When pulling up to Five Guys to retrieve my fries I’m greeted inside with a “Robert’s in the house!” by the lady employee that knows me by name at this point.

Anthony rolls up to the restaurant in a Camry, which he actually owns. He hops out with a basketball and dribbles around the parking lot high on his own energy, which he can’t contain for too long. He joins me for a few hours in the car while I deliver orders.

...

He’s back. My brother from another mother. Two invigorating spirits who know how to see eye to eye and see past the veil. As we talk it’s as if he never left at all. It was all a hoax, a myth. He’s been here this whole time. Our conversation moves naturally as it did before...finishing each other’s phrases...putting the periods at the end of one another’s sentences.

...

Recounting the mini car accident I got into a few weeks ago. He guesses which road it happened on by reciting a mock journal entry...

Him: “Driving down First Colonial Road...”

Me: “Haha. It WAS actually on First Colonial Road!”

Him: “Of course it was. Most of your universe driving wise is contained on that road right there.”

...

Me: “I feel like the girls that I get deeply involved with...there is something that connects all of them.”

Him: “Well that makes sense cause you’re attracted to them and they’re attracted to you, a certain type.”

Me: “Yeah they’re like really intense girls that I get involved with for whatever reason.”

Him: “You can substitute intense for crazy, if you want to.”

[Haha]

Him: “You could just go ahead and do that.”

...

Delivering an order on the 700 block of 16th street. It’s apartment #3. A cute light skinned girl answers the door in only a towel. I’m taken aback at the situation. She acts embarrassed and tells me to hold on a minute. All the while her little kid, maybe two or three years old sits in his wheelie chair and just stares at me. She returns with the cash and a five-dollar tip. I thank her and I’m on my way. Later in the car...

Me: “What kind of reaction would I have gotten if I would’ve walked in there and just starting kissing her? Like what do you think she would’ve done?”

With a chuckle Anthony replies, “How good of a kisser are you?”

Me: “I mean I think I’m pretty good I don’t know. Do you think she would resist?”

Him: “Not if you were a good enough kisser.”

Me: “Yeah?”

Him: “Yeah I think so. Well if her kid hadn’t been there I would’ve given you more of a shot it probably would’ve gone over well.”

Me: “I mean it was like a baby though.”

Him: “Yeah you know, I feel comfortable about sex in front of a fish sometimes.”

[Haha]

...

Delivering an order to the Russell House. Anthony accompanies me inside. At the front entrance a few elderly people sit on benches. An old man blurts out, “You guys want to go on a boat ride?”

Me: “I can’t. I’m working right now.”

Old man: “You’re no good if you’re working.”

...

Explaining the broken glass theory...

Him: “The mere presence of chaos leads to more chaos.”

...

Anthony divulges into his ambitious ideas and I soak it all in...the gears in our heads turning and cranking.

...

Him: “Besides physicality it can suck to lose your best friend and that goes for much longer than you think it’s going to. You know you want to call someone...the only person who’s going to get a reference or something or just a simple you telling about your day, and they’re not there anymore to tell it and that really sucks. And I think that kicks in after the sex thing because the sex thing is so primal.”

...

Delivering an order to Bay Pointe Medical Center. I pass a nurse and a patient in the hallway. I overhear the nurse say to the patient, “Doesn’t it say to sniff and swallow?” I look down at a post-it note taped to the seat of his wheel chair/walker that has written on it in black permanent marker, “SNIFF AND SWALLOW”. The patient does exactly that in response.

...

Discussing my observation of all the mangled and beat up cars on the road, the people who get into accidents and don’t ever repair those dents or bent-in bumpers or crooked doors.

Me: “So they just drive around in these banged up cars and they don’t have any money to fix it. It’s crazy.”

Him: “I think it’s probably metaphorical too.”

Me: “Absolutely. It’s representative of people. We walk around life banged up and we can’t afford to fix our wounds.”

Him: “Or we tell ourselves that we don’t have the means to.”

...

Delivering an order off Lynnhaven Parkway. The customer owns a little dog with only one eye. I mention it to Anthony when I get back in the car...

Me: “One-eyed dog.”

Him: “No way.”

Me: “Yes way.”

Him: “Can that be our password for something? Yeah so you’ll know it’s me.”

...

Him: “At some point did you ever read a lot of Ralph Waldo Emerson’s stuff?”

Me: “Yeah. Of course.”

Him: “Okay. Well I was reading his journals and his notes and stuff and you guys definitely have really similar spirits.”

Me: “Oh yeah I’ve always felt connected with transcendentalism.”

Him: “Well specifically him. Literally there were like ten to fifteen different things and passages and stuff that he said and I was like, this is like a Robert thing.”

Me: “I’ve always felt connected to his philosophy. Always. And even Thoreau. That was like a big thing for me when I took English.”

...

It’s time for Anthony to leave. I continue the rest of my shift solo.

Five is today’s magic tip number, which makes it a profitable day.

Snacking on Trail Mix to tide me over.

Finally off work and back home.

Vegetable Lo Mein with a Trader Joe’s Summer Brew.

Cleaning up downstairs and doing dishes.

A bowl of Frosted Toast Crunch.

Watching the third Transformers: Dark of the Moon (2011).

12:37 p.m. Waking up. Tara’s beside me.

Me: “Are you tired anymore?”

Her: “Not really. Just being lazy.”

Me: “Do you remember what happened last night?

Her: “Haha. Yeah I came back here and you seduced me.”

Me: “Seduced you? Ha. I guess I did.”

...

We arise from the bed.

Me: “Are you horny right now?”

Her: “A little bit.”

Me: “Cause I am.”

And I instigate a quick sex scene.

Making French Toast for us. Drinking Milk and Orange Juice to go along with it.

Cleaning up the downstairs and making repairs on the TV tower. I’ve got all six up and running again.

Egg Sandwich with Mayonnaise and Tomato. Salt n Vinegar Chips. Honey Oolong Tea.

Watching Meet Joe Black (1998).

The Show n Smell music troupe arrives...reigning from Pennsylvania.

Barbecue Garlic Salmon with and Indian Side Dish and Broccoli.

Shortly after, the kids arrive too. It’s a full house, packed to the brim. We’ve reached capacity. Show n Smell performs a small set of an experimental kind using mixers, keyboards, guitars, and drum loop gadgets. Rusty’s band, Trust Fall plays next. Then, a group called Stereo Cult goes on. And Playground Runaround. The Nerdlucks. And a yo-yo expert. Then, comedy poetry. And so the night goes. The backyard is littered with conversation and cigarettes. The house is full of wine and charm.

Through email Anthony requested I make an announcement before he makes his grand arrival. So I speak into the microphone, “Please do not come outside if you're an expectant mother, prone to epileptic seizures or have a pre-existing heart condition. Also, don't come outside if you don't want to get wet and sticky...that's what she said.” And so I gather all the kids out front. We wait. People get scared. Some stay behind. And then we hear a car stereo thumping something jovial and loud. A vehicle slowly rides through the parking lot and we watch as roman candles and other fireworks of the like go off shooting over the rooftops. Anthony, Skippy, and Josh jump out the car and toss bucketfuls of candy and silly string everywhere. Our LIVE facilitator has returned. My brother. Dean  Moriarty. Anthony. We exchange a firm and warm hug and the rest of the night’s shenanigans continue...

Because of the fireworks and the noise in the neighborhood we are greeted by a female police officer that lays down the law but is very understanding. We’re left with a warning.

...

We gather a crowd and transfer the celebration to The Friends School playground. Rope Swing. Monkey Bars. Acrobats. It’s late hours recess and we are the children of the night.

Settling down from all the night’s madness.

A small bowl of Frosted Toast Crunch.

Sleep close after 4 a.m.

A genius scientist with mad tendencies has discovered a new element that could change the world on some biblical level but he’s hiding a secret about it. He conducts these live TV shows from his home in this special glass encased room with futuristic furniture. I’ve taken on the role of his wife. My motive is to reveal his secret because I feel he’s selfishly holding back from talking about it, maybe to protect the people and prevent chaos erupting all across the world. But something tells me this information needs to get out. He leaves the room. I attempt to hack into the TV’s input settings and upload a video where he’s telling the truth about everything. I’m struggling but eventually get it playing, but only for a minute cause he returns angry and frantic.

Waking up around 1 p.m.

Apricots. Figs. Orange Juice.

[Text message with Kristin]

Her: “Do me a favor. Do some thinking for the next couple days about me. And really figure out what you feel in your heart and mind and get back to me. I want to know whats up. And what path you’re trying to take. Ok. No cream puff bullshit. We are both adults. I think we need to be honest straight forward with each other. Face to face once and for all.”

Me: “once and for all? really? its not that dramatic. I haven’t once been dishonest with you about my feelings.”

Her: “You speak in metaphors and scenarios lets stop beating around the bush. I’m not asking for much.”

Me: “the direction of my path I’ve made clear. my life isn’t conducive to stabilize a dating relationship with you or anyone. we’ve talked about this. but I still hold you in an exclusive special place that we’ve created Kristin.”

Her: “You sure do give me some beautiful mixed signals in your actions. Let me make things clear. I like you. I have fun with you. I would date you. But you are not on the same page and I’m not kidding myself into the idea that we can be only friends.”

Me: “I like you too very much. and I think we have fun too. I would date you too. I’m just not in a place where I’m prepared for it nor feel like I can give it my all...which is what you deserve.”

Her: “So what do you want? Out of this? Out of me?”

Me: “I want to give you as much as I can give. we are really close and I don’t think we can stray from that. how am I supposed to categorize a non-dating relationship? there are degrees in everything. intimate friends that are lovers sometimes? I don’t know. it felt natural to engage with you like that last night. but I don’t require that from you either. like I said I didn’t plan on doing that.”

Her: “Mm. yeah. I really see that explanation of a connection you just gave ending in a disastrous mess. I’ve been there. And I don’t do well. But if that is what you want then I can’t change your mind.”

Me: “if I was ready for an exciting dating relationship with you I would know beyond a shadow of a doubt. but I know I’m not...not with anyone.”

Her: “Well that’s that then. Bam.”

Me: “this isn’t news. we’ve had this conversation before.”

Her: “I think, and I may be jumping the gun here, but it is safe to say we should cease this path. I think we should be free to see other people.”

Me: “I kind of thought that was already the case when you stopped talking with me and deleted me and ripped up my gift.”

Her: “That was a desperate act to make myself get over the inevitable truth. I like you too much to be just your friend bc I want to be your lover. I will be settling for something I will never have in full :( I am not one to impose. I respect your wants.”

Me: “I respect that kristin. this whole thing is tender and delicate.”

Her: “Yes, yes it is. I bruise easily but can def take a fall. So I’ll be ok. Ok so where do you want to go from here?”

Me: “I don’t know how to answer that.”

...

Me: “Kristin, please know that I feel your heart beating.”

Her: “I don’t think I can feel yours.”

Me: “trust me. it beats...sometimes rapidly.”

Her: “I don’t believe in wanting cake and eating it too. This isn’t a frivolous game of chess. This is my life. I take it seriously. I feel a little out of sorts and I’m confused. Maybe we can talk about this another time or just let it be for now. My heart is in my throat.”

Me: “I love your personality and your heart. this definitely isn’t a frivolous chess game. id like to see you another time soon.”

Her: “I can’t agree to that. I don’t know what the future holds.”

Chic Pea Avocado Quinoa with Tomatoes. Honey Oolong Tea.

House chores. A little makeshift landscaping.

Then, heading over to Devon’s house where her and Darren have planned a pool party/cookout. James Graves, Kevin, and Tara are also present.

Eating Kababs, Black Bean Salad, and Mac n Cheese.

Good times in the pool. Cannonballs, Belly flops, squirt guns, and chicken fights.

Back home. The rest of the crew goes to Skybar at the oceanfront.

I’m trying to avoid an emotional dependency on someone.

Steamed Broccoli and Carrots with Rice. Coconut Water.

Watching Meet Joe Black (1998).

Darren, Devon, James, and Tara return from the oceanfront outing all drunked out. Tara slips into my room to sleep for a few hours because she has to work super early and of course is in no way coherent enough to drive. I take on the role of a caretaker, hydrating her with water and feeding her an apricot. We had sex once before so I didn’t feel opposed to the idea of it happening again. I ask, “Are you feeling horny?”

She replies, “Yeah. I am.”

I take over from there and fuel the sexual fire with friction between our bodies. It progresses into a lengthy sex scene that’s anything but lacking. I finish and we lie down out of breath.

Me: “Well that was fun...once again.”

She chuckles and agrees, “Yeah it was.”

...

Her: “Remember that question you asked me last time?”

Me: “What? I don’t remember.”

Her: “What do you want from me?”

Me: “Oh yeah. Right. I don’t know. I’m just following my instincts.”

...

She drifts off to sleep but I’m still awake. I watch a little bit of a movie and snack on Chocolate Chip Cookies.

It’s probably a good time to do some reflecting now. Tara is a different breed than I’m used to. She’s reserved but open to suggestion. I really can’t pin point what exactly it is that I want from her. It’s more likely that I’m just looking for a good time and someone to release sexual steam with. Things between her and I don’t happen because they need to but more so because they want to. Lest I forgot, which I haven’t, I was with Kristin last night and it was an intense scene as well. I definitely feel more connected and sense more of a potential with her that is if I was ready to settle down. This is a time of freedom and experimentation for me. I should come to terms with that and make sure to be honest with everyone involved when the topic arises.
