☼ ○ ▬

I’ve returned to what’s understood to be my neighborhood but looks extremely different. I find a long stretch of people lined up against the wall leading to an open garage. They’re here for Show N Tell and it’s already begun without me. I clamor up to the microphone and welcome everyone and apologize for being tardy. A familiar looking dude starts banging on the snare drum in a fast pace. Josiah jams on the electric guitar. And I’m supposed to makeshift song and lyric.

Josiah yells out to me, “It’s Oi!”

I do my best to fit the genre.

The song stops and I talk to the snare dude, “I remember you from the store. You checked me out.”

I leave the garage and pass by the line of Show N Tellers, hi-fiving some, hugging others. I step inside my house, which happens to be a five-story apartment. Walking up the stairs passing more partiers. I finally make it to the top floor and into my bedroom to find two black lesbians doing sexual things in my bed, more specifically 69ing.

I contest, “What in the world are you guys doing in my bed? This is my room! I sleep there!”

I was ready to accept the scene and continue doing what I came to do here but I can’t remember what it was. Suddenly, Emily Hill is here doing her makeup. Then I realize none of this stuff is mine and that’s not my bed. Now I feel more distressed than before.

Me: “Emily, what’s going on here? This is supposed to be my room!”

She doesn’t seem phased by anything. It’s understood her and the rest of the house made a unanimous decision that I should move out and not tell me about it. It’s also understood that Emily just recently moved back in this house.

Me: “You think you can just leave for years and then move back in here and then kick me out??? No! No!”

She continues with her makeup. I check the nearby bedrooms to see if they moved me into another room or something, but no.

Me: “Who do you think you are? I had to listen to all your Wesley shit earlier and be your friend and this is what I get in return?”

She steps over to the mirror and fixes her hair into a bun. She’s not being very understanding whatsoever. Meanwhile, I notice the black lesbians are still there in the bed.

In anger I pull Emily’s hair back and demand, “Where is my stuff?”

She hands me a yellow post-it note with specific directions that lead to a small closet in the basement.

Me: “This is ridiculous!”

We fall backward but still standing. I see in her eyes that she’s becoming impatient with this rant. She swings a pen around and stabs me in the side of my stomach. It doesn’t hurt but definitely punctures my skin. I wrap my arms around her and start to cry. I lean my head on her shoulder and whimper. Feeling like I have no control and no sympathy.

Me: “Why did you do this to me?”

Breathing heavily. No more anger. Just vying for empathy...for love.

Dropping off some stuff at the storage unit then heading to Norfolk for a pre-meditated hang out with Kristin. She just moved into a new place on Colley.

...

Stuffing down some Watermelon on the way.

...

I arrive. It feels good to be seeing her. We always have such a fun time in our interaction. In awe at the strangeness of the single room studio apartment. Girl, Interrupted (1999) playing on her small flat screen but muted with subtitles. And her iPod shuffling through songs in the background giving the impression of a music video.

Me: “This place kind of reminds me of Relative Theory [the old record shop on Granby].”

...

Sharing a dinner she put together in her little mini kitchen: Chic Pea Avocado Quinoa with Sautéed Zucchini and Squash.

She adores her precious Ice Bat pillow.

...

We walk on over to Fairgrounds. I order a Coffee with a delicious Vegan Cinnamon Bun. Finding a spot out on the front porch. A few chatty college kids nearby. A nice breeze brushing by our faces. I discuss my birthday depression dilemma...

Me: “It’s such a pivotal day of the year like people make it this big deal. I’m turning 28 this year. Why am I not married? Why am I not...There’s a lot of why questions I ask myself. Birthdays are just reminders to me of how unaccomplished I am.”

Her: “You know why you feel that way.”

Me: “Why do I feel that way?”

Her: “Your time is consumed with creative things that you want to do and what society wants you to do. You are conflicted with two lifestyles.”

...

Me: “You feel like you’ve learned anything from me personally? Or am I just like an oddball creature to you?”

Her: “Well, you’re an oddball creature but sure I mean I take bits and pieces from everyone.”

...

Her: “I just have these standards for myself. I feel like it’s always me going through this battle in my head you know? Like it’s like, you’re challenging me. No I’m not challenging you, Kristin. You’re playing fucking games with me. You’re probably not playing games with me. I see things in this lens of me against the world.”

Me: “Most people kind of think that way though.”

The train whistle blows in the distant. She reaches out to the leaf of a nearby plant growing through the opening in the patio fencing.

Her: “I just want to be close to plants. Plants are my friends. They’re so comforting. They’re like green. They’re alive. They’re breathing. My plants depend on me.”

Me: “Haha.”

...

Back at her apartment. Lying on her bed. I have no expectations or any pre-meditated sexual intentions. But the mood is right and both of us individually have been deprived. The sexy industrial sounds of How to Destroy Angels, a side project of Trent Reznor’s, providing the soundtrack and inspiring the rhythm to our sexual desires. There’s no reason not to engage.

Ø ♂ Ø × Ø ♀ Ø × Ø ♂ Ø × Ø ♀ Ø

Me: “We just had sex through that entire album.”

...

Referring to the constant wetness she has, “You are like a waterfall down there.”

Her: “What’s wrong with that?”

I start laughing, “Nothing at all.”

Her: “I told you I don’t need lubricant.”

Me: “Someone needs to build a dam.”

[Haha]

...

Me: “Your after-sex behavior is pretty rambunctious. Were you trying to have sex with me tonight? Were you planning on that?”

Her: “No.”

Me: “That was a nice surprise. I have been sexually frustrated lately.”

Her: “Well why don’t you do something about it?”

Me: “I did.”

Her: “Anytime you want to approach me about sex you should probably do it because I’m probably ready.”

Me: “Haha. Say that again.”

...

We walk over to Emily’s apartment and chill with her and Doug in the kitchen. Ambrotious prancing around our legs. Discussing Katy Perry and Wes Anderson films.

...

I walk her back to the apartment. I mention how it’s after 1 a.m.

She makes fun of me, “Wait, it’s past your blog reflection time!”

...

Her: “I need someone rational to rationally talk to me about these irrational thoughts I have!”

Driving back to the beach.

At home. I’m terribly hungry from the caffeine. Popcorn, Beer, and Chocolate will satiate me.

My mom and I hop inside an ambulance but it’s the size of a trailer home with a lot of walking space. I start driving down Virginia Beach Blvd. It’s raining. Kenneth, being his normal self, is whacking a golf ball with a hockey stick in front of us as a kind of playful gesture. I’m having a hard time controlling the ambulance vehicle. It’s understood it belongs to Kenneth. But I notice a display of kitchenware that used to belong to me. I encourage my mom to help me collect all the dishes and glasses that look familiar.

▬ ○ ☼ ○ ▬

In my house at 1435 in Chanticleer. I’m being held hostage in my bedroom along with a few others, some friends, and some strangers. The captors aren’t very hostile looking, just normal folks. It almost feels like I’ve been put in a SimCity-like game where anyone can take on whatever role they choose. A pole has been set up and it’s understood we will be tied up on it and killed. It’s not time yet. And they’re letting us roam about the house. I’ve even been allowed to hold onto my phone.

I inform them, “I’m just going to the bathroom.”

I trot to the downstairs restroom. The light doesn’t work so I keep the door ajar. My goal is to contact the police. I decide that it’s safer to not make any phone calls myself cause they’ll hear me. So I attempt to text James Graves. I open up the messaging app and have a hard time typing the correct letters in his name. It becomes a struggle. Someone walks by. I give up and walk into the living room. One of the captors passes by and tells me they’re heading to the store to buy a listening CD and some drinks. He laughs. I guess they want our murder to be a celebration. I plop down on the couch. There’s a substantial amount of people here, acquaintances and friends alike. I realize its mid afternoon and most had spent the night. James is here but just now waking up. A movie is playing on the TV. I grab a denim bound notebook with a collection of comic pictures inside. I locate a blank spot and decide to write a help letter to James, since I couldn’t text and since I can’t talk about it out loud. The pen is losing ink but I finally finish the letter.

James,
...being held hostage...go out to your car and call the cops...they’re going to kill us...you must call them now...

Margot calls me randomly wanting a partner to go to Wal-Mart with.

Me: “I’m gonna have to decline.”

Her: “Why?”

Me: “Because I have my own thing I’m doing. And I don’t really wanna go to Wal-Mart.”

Her: “You don’t wanna see me?”

Me: “I don’t know.”

...

Her: “What’s going on with you? You sound conflicted.”

Me: “Yeah you conflict me. You conflict my life.”

I start discussing my sexual frustrations and how I might’ve been disappointed we didn’t have sex the night before, even though she wasn’t supposed to be there in the first place, and even though I don’t feel it’s right. However I explain that it doesn’t make sense to go against this natural biological desire between us when we do see each other.

Me: “It’s a big part of how I connect with you.”

...

Despite, I feel led to join Margot in her Wal-Mart adventures. In return she helps me drop off my car at the shop. I’m in a funk the whole time...as if there’s a grey cloud looming above my head slowly growing...and I don’t know why. She’s all peppy as we browse the electronics section. I can’t seem to share the same excitement to be here surrounded by a wall of flat screen $1000 TV’s and $50 Wii games. I’m in a weird mood.

Her: “Why are you acting so glum?”

I can hardly put out any words that describe how I’m feeling. I don’t understand it myself.

...

She drives me back to the house. Parked in a spot. The car is still running.

Me: “I’m sorry. I feel so disconnected. I don’t know what’s wrong. It might be related to you. But it’s probably a culmination of things.”

She grabs my hand and swings my arm around her, leaning into my chest.

Her: “It’s okay.”

Me: “I do feel sad.”

Her: “If you need anything call me.”

Me: “Okay.”

I step out of the car...

I go for a quick run around the neighborhood, as fast as I can at first and then pacing myself. Feeling destructive. Picking up an unopened bottle of Dasani off the ground and slamming it with all my might across the street – bottle cap pops off and water soaring along Laskin Road.

This is what I’ve been aiming for. Independence. What am I pouting about? Discipline. That’s what I’ve been missing. I need to go on multiple fasts.

Getting out of bed at 11:15 a.m.

Apricots. Figs. Orange Juice.

All day shift at China Wok.

It’s a tad bit cooler than yesterday, emphasis on the tad.

[Text message]

Margot: “How come you never want to hang out with me anymore?”

Me: “I’m sorry. I’ve been busy lately. but I guess that’s normal for me.”

Margot: “Yeah and I’m not worth you making time for anymore I guess.”

Me: “that’s not true. its not a question of worth. it’s a question of should.”

...

Me: “come visit me if you want. I’m working. its kind of slow.”

I take a pit stop at the house and make some Scrambled Eggs with Tomato. Then, to Five Guys for French Fries with Ketchup and Malt Vinegar. Sipping on Honey Oolong Tea.

Margot meets me there. It feels like more time has passed than it really has since I last saw her. The conversation is playful and friendly. There’s a slight hint of flirtatious behavior. It feels natural to jest.

Me: “So have you been sexually frustrated?”

Her: “No.”

I smile real big and ask, “Are you trying to have sex with me?”

Her: “What? Ew. No.”

She answers in this way because of the Pet Smart employees, just inches away from our table.

...

Outside in the parking lot, about to leave...

Me: “You need me to make you feel pretty. You need me for validation. I know.”

Her: “No. I can get that from other people.”

Me: “Yeah but I’m comfortable. You know me.”

...

Me: “You haven’t seen my car yet have you?”

Her: “Yeah I have. It’s purple...Barney purple. It’s a Barney mobile.”

Me: “No. It’s a Wonka machine.”

It’s a slow afternoon for Chinese food. An order here and there but mostly I just sit and read and tweak with things.

Watermelon. I haven’t had the opportunity to enjoy watermelon all summer. This is satisfying.

The jet noise is exceptionally obnoxious today. I imagine it might be normal for me to own a pair of those noise-canceling headphones that airport workers usually wear just for this purpose.

Twix Bar.

Off work and back home.

Hot and Sour Soup with Fried Noodles. Spring Rolls.

Fortune Cookie says, “Failing to plan is planning to fail.”

Enjoying some Peach Cobbler that Darren made and a Trader Joe’s Summer Ale downstairs. Richie and Kevin jamming on violin and guitar nearby. Small talk with Darren, Devon, and Tara at the card table.

...

Tara needs to charge her phone so I offer to take care of that up in my room. Chatting for a bit while I put my clean clothes away. Discussing the topic of the ideal age one should get married...

Me: “I feel anytime after 30 is good. I like the idea of not being enslaved in your 20’s...being autonomous and free for a while.”

...

Things get awkward when Margot starts to call me. I answer the phone. She’s upset with her friend who apparently just threw up in her car. She wants to come over. Obviously this is a bad time.

Tara: “I can go if you need me to.”

Me: “Yeah this is awkward. I’m sorry.”

Tara doesn’t seem in any way offended and understands. We never planned to hang out anyway. But what am I to do? Margot claims she’s going to come over no matter what. Intertwining relations is a confusing and muddled thing.

As soon as Tara exits the house Margot walks up the stairs. She questions the girl she just passed on her way in here.

I assure her, “Oh that’s one of Devon’s friends.”

...

Me: “We’re separated and I want to stay that way. I know I saw you earlier today and I was being playful and flirty. But I thought about it afterwards and I can’t act like that around you.”

When I’m around her I feel attracted. And I’m concerned I won’t be able to control these desires. She makes clear she’s not here to make moves and won’t bombard me with anything of the like. I get that. She just wants a close friend to sleep next to and feel comfortable and help purge all the negative energy of the day with.

...

Her: “You’re the nicest person in the world...for dealing with me. I know I’m a handful.”

...

Lying down in the bed. We can’t help but kiss and hold on tight to each other. But I’m not allowed to go any further. I said earlier that it would be detrimental and she took that to heart. So I’m left unsatisfied but it’s probably for the better. I guess the strange part to think about is if Tara had stayed over I’m certain we would’ve had sex. But the person I’ve had a crazy love affair with for over 3 some odd years is here in my bed and I’m not having sex. I’m sensing the difference between biological needs and emotional needs.

Staying at a hotel with three other men. One of them, Brad Pitt, and another fairly known actor are staying in one room. And I’m left with the other man in the living room, who takes a liking to smoking weed with his friends. I don’t think I can sleep through this. I spot seven dollars worth of casino tickets on the floor. A well-dressed woman mentions that someone left these and that I should take them.

Me: “I don’t even know what to do with these. You’ll have to show me the ropes.”

I analyze the tickets and see names and time stamps written on them.

Her: “I guess I could have you use my name.”

White Apricots. Orange Juice.

It feels like I’m walking inside a giant oven outside.

I step into China Wok for my all day shift and I’m greeted by a massive amount of arguing between Cecily and Ling, my two bosses. But I’m just a fly on the wall listening to their incomprehensive language. Even though I can’t understand the topic at hand I can understand the negative energy.

It’s been non-stop all day long. No time to think really.

A few scattered conversations with friends here and there.

Keep delivering...

The rush dies down a little bit after 7. Two girls walk in and place an order for crab rangoon and steamed dumplings. The one girl, whom I find fairly attractive and also looks familiar, comments about how she can’t find crab rangoon at any other Chinese restaurant.

Me: “You look familiar.”

Girl: “I get that a lot. I remind people of their first cousins. I mean I’ve lived here all my life.”

Me: “Yeah me too.”

In five minutes they leave with their food. The Russian delivery driver comments, “I think she liked you.”

Me: “How do you know that?”

Him: “It’s an old man thing.”

Me: “I think I have that too.”

Finally off work and back home. I don’t want to speak with anyone. I want to submerse myself into myself.

Waking up around 10 a.m.

Stephanie scoops me up at the house and we start our drive to Richmond for The Vaginasaurs show.

Coffee. Apricots. Figs.

Anytime we take this trip it’s inevitable: Stephanie will have to pee as soon as we get out of the tunnel. And of course there are no convenient exits or gas stations nearby, especially once we reach Williamsburg. It’s at least a five-mile trek off the interstate. We find a quaint little colonial shopping plaza with a restroom. Afterwards, I start semi-bitching to her and sarcastically overreacting to the setback.

She responds, “You’re acting like a girl.”

Me: “Um. I’m not the one that had to pee at the most inconvenient place on the interstate.”

...

We’re in her brand new Prius, which is getting almost 50 miles per gallon. I feel like we’re in a space pod. Talking here and there about this and that.

...

Her: “When you’re not productive it feels like you’re on drugs or something.”

...

Me: “I don’t want anyone else to have the upper hand on my heart right now.”

...

Snacking on a Peanut Sandwich on Rye Bread.

...

Coming across at least three different accidents that cause major traffic.

We arrive at Sarah’s house in Richmond.

Rehearsing through the set in her basement.

Sarah has an appointment so Stef and I ride to Diversity thrift store and browse for cool finds.

...

Then we relax at The Village Café off West Grace Street, right across from the venue.

Hummus Plate and a Dr. Pepper.

Wesley happens to be visiting in Richmond so he stops by. Babe scoping out the window.

[ii]

At Strange Matter. Setting up to play. The Vaginasaurs go on first. I decline to wear the usual dress while playing drums because of the heat. The green wig will do. We play through our surf garage pop jams and are well received by the masses it seems.

...

Drinking down a pitcher offered to us free of charge. Observing the crowd: summer attire Richmond fiends, cut-off shorts, tattered T’s, and patched up jean jackets. The other female fronted bands perform after us, Slutever and Tacocat. It’s a fun show with a successful turnout of kids.

[iii]

Afterwards, we make friends with the bands and share some food and drink at the bar.
Scoffing down a Lentil Burger and French Fries at the bar while Stef and I converse with Lelah, the drummer of Tacocat.

...

We migrate to Sarah’s house where all the bands are supposed to be sleeping at. Lelah and I are delegated to go on a beer run. I attempt to drive Stephanie’s Prius for the first time. It’s an adventure.

...

Lelah and I return with the beer but move out to the front porch shortly after. We sit down on the brick steps and share a clove. The friendly neighborhood cat focuses on a flying insect – jumping and running with a hunter’s intent. The crickets chirping and other unknown summer creatures making strange noises. The heat thickening the air. We’re lost in talk – thoroughly engaged in each other’s stories and thoughts. There’s something in the way we converse that just clicks and makes the interaction whole. Her life is in Seattle. Mine in Virginia Beach. Finding similarities in our individual roles at home. She’s 28. I’m 27. Someone that understands.

Me: “Your drumming was really sexy.”

Throughout the conversation I keep randomly bombarding her with these compliments. And she reacts gratefully every time with a big smile.

I blurt it out of nowhere...halfway interrupting her...

“I really want to kiss you.”

She pauses and smiles real big...

Her: “I knew you were going to say that.”

Me: “How did you know that? You could probably read it on my face.”

Then...she reaches in and smacks her lips on mine before I even have the chance to think about it. I lean back but accept the gesture.

I breathe out an, “Oh.”

Her: “Is that okay?”

Me: “Oh yeah. Totally.”

I reach in myself and instigate more kisses.

Her: “I feel like I’m in middle school again.”

Me: “Yeah. Me too.”

...

Me: “Do you ever think that everything’s scripted...like in some cosmic way?”

...

Back in the house, Stephanie and I say our goodbyes to the group. Lelah gives me her number.

On the drive back to Virginia Beach. I inform Stephanie about what just went down. She gets almost more excited about it than me.

Her: “Oh my gaaaa! I can’t believe it. You kissed the drummer of Tacocat. That’s too kewt!”

I feel extremely uplifted and high-spirited while at the wheel but careful not to blow it up more than its worth. This was a one-time deal most likely. However I’m not completely closed off to the idea of something growing.

Me: “I mean, even if nothing comes of this it was a good experience.”

Banana.

In the middle of a text conversation with Kristin. She wants to hang out this evening but I’m booked.

Me: “Well you’re going dancing aren’t you?”

Her: “I don’t want to, I want to do something meaningful.”

Me: “I like that drive.”

Her: “I’m just over empty nights of dancing. The same faces no stimulating conversations.”

Me: “That sounds like the start to a great song.”

Her: “I’m just over this scene I’m better than what these nights have to offer. I’m bored.”

Me: “you need an adventure.”

Her: “That and I need to get out of doing the same thing. I’m wasting away. I feel like I’m in a rut. But I have fun when we hang out. I feel alive.”

Me: “I know. we cling together well. its fun.”

...

Her: “You’re there for lots of people they all need your attention I can’t compete.”

Me: “I knowwwww. its exhausting. but I chose this life I suppose.”

Her: “Am I just one other person that you are taking care of?”

...

Her: “I don’t want to know that answer.”

Scrambled Eggs. Tortilla Chips with Fresh Guacamole. Honey Green Tea.

Watching The Punisher (2004).

At the storage unit brushing up on Vaginasaurs songs with Stephanie.

I get called into work for a few hours at China Wok.

Strawberries and Chocolate.

Back home. I bike over to Rick’s Café to eat dinner with Emily Hill. She vents more to me about her situation with Wesley and getting acclimated to the non-dating aspect of it. She’s not understanding well the identity of their relationship. Sometimes we reminisce on the olden times at 1623 and times when I visited Maryland.

Fried Catfish Strips with Fried Okra, Sweet Potato Fries, and Texas Toast. I believe the word fry was used too many times in that dinner selection.

It’s been about an hour. We conclude everything and pay for our food at the register.

...

I bike back home.

I receive a call from Margot.

Her: “Come hang out with me!”

Me: “No. I want to be alone tonight.”

Her: “No you don’t. Come over.”

Me: “You’re such a baby.”

Her: “No. I’m a princess.”

...

Her: “Why don’t you wanna hang out with me anymore?”

Me: “I already told you. I don’t want to get attached. I see what’s happening. You’re trying to integrate yourself into my life.”

Her: “Well what’s wrong with that?”

Me: “Because we’re supposed to be separated.”

She replies with the same statement she started out with, “Come hang out with me.”

Me: “You’re ridiculous. No. I’m staying here.”

Her: “You’re nothing but a big ole fat disappointment.”

This whole day has been looted with reach-outs from other people. Between Kristin, other friends, miscellaneous calls that aren’t worth mentioning, and Margot, I feel like my job is to be everyone’s companion/friend. I’m not up for it. I appreciate the need but I can’t fulfill the job description. I need a demotion.

Feeling an insatiable thirst that I can’t seem to quench. Chugging Orange Juice.

Waking up at 1:20 p.m. with a heaviness permeating through my head.

Peanut Butter Toast. Orange Juice.

Kristin reaches out to me in a casual way. She just moved into her new apartment and needs company. We both sort of have errands to run so she insists on joining.

Me: “I’m kind of confused considering all the talks we’ve had this past week.”

Her: “I don’t care about all that. I’m not trying to be your girlfriend. I don’t see why we can’t just hang out.”

Me: “Yeah I feel you. I don’t see why we just can’t hang out either.”

Kristin arrives and runs errands with me. We have a good time in our interaction as usual...when it’s casual and not so serious. She’s such a firecracker – whining about the heat and lack of AC in my car – using napkins to dab the sweat accumulating onto her pale skin – that big smile on her face. She’s wearing aviators and asks, “You think I can wear these in Trader Joe’s?”

Me: “I think you shouldn’t. There’s yuppies in there and they want you to look humble.”

...

Back at the house. Sitting down at the card table sharing Figs, Chips and Fresh Guacamole, and Honey Green Tea. I eat a Grilled Cheese with Tomato. Earlier she confessed to destroying the mix CD I gave her, inspired by an impulsive anger. I didn’t know how to respond. I felt offended. She apologized but explained she felt it represented a new start of no expectations.

Me: “I thought you didn’t ever want to see me or hang out with me again.”

She explains that being friends with me is in the cards.

Her: “Even though I still want to be friends I want you to know there’s still a glimmer of affection.”

Me: “Yeah I think so for me too.”

...

We move on in the conversation.

Me: “If I was a girl we could totally be like Ghost World. I really think we get along that well. I want to film our interaction. Like on a sitcom or a movie. It’s very entertaining.”

...

Calum arrives. Kristin leaves. And today’s saga continues. We drive to the storage unit and jam. Switching instruments. He strums a beautiful chord progression from a song he wrote about a girl he only knew for one week. It’s a Grizzly Bear-Weezer-like style of song – an emotional depth that does nothing but hypnotize.

...

Riding in the car in route to home. Venting to Calum a little bit on the progress I’ve been making on eliminating the female toxin out of my life.

Me: “I’m just not a lonely person. I don’t feel lonely right now.”

Calum: “There’s a lot of lonely people out there.”

Back home. Darren and Devon are here. Tara arrives.

Eating dinner: Barbecue Garlic Salmon with Broccoli, Mushrooms, Onions, and Rice. Foster’s.

Darren: “Fosters. Australian for piss.”

Me: “Shut up. I like Foster’s.”

The four of us go out to Baja’s for drinks. Sipping on a Jack and Coke. Then, a SoCo and Coke. Darren downloads Kings on his smart phone and we play a round. I’m feeling dizzy and drunk. An intense debate sparks on the new healthcare reform (ObamaCare) and leads into the government’s responsibilities; how they should provide food and shelter no matter what social class you are in. Fortunately, nobody gets offended and no personal wrenches are thrown into the machine – just a pure intelligent conversation.

...

As we’re driving back home – next to Tara in the backseat of Darren’s car – I nuzzle innocently against her shoulder. A mutual affection shared...like last time. We arrive home. Tara in my bedroom. She perches on my bed while I sit in the computer chair. Discussing our dating life and asking pretty blunt questions, but none of it feels uncomfortable, as she mentions.

Me: “Tara, are you sexually attracted to me?”

Her: “Yeah. I am. How bout you?”

I smile shyly, “Yes.”

We continue talking about our recent interactions with the opposite sex.

...

I move my face closer to her neck...just a gradual brush of affection...offering my lips on her neck then on the side of her stomach. This could be it. I think we both want the same thing. Finally, I allow my lips to passionately connect to hers. This leads to a condom. And leads to a lengthy sex scene. At first I feared the condom might inhibit my stamina like it usually does. But I press forward and stay strong. It turns out to be a pleasurable experience...for the both of us.

...

I clean myself up and lie down next to her.

Me: “That was fun. You’re really good.”

Her: “So are you.”

It’s hot in this room. I’ve got two different fans running. She has to get up super early at seven in the morning so we drift off to sleep around 3 a.m.

I make my way into a portable building. Exploring underneath the grassy narrow hallways. Finding a collection of old pictures and knick-knacks that I threw out years ago (three yellow toy pianos, a Barney picture with graffiti on it). Why would they be here? What a coincidence I would come across them at this time in this place. I hear strangers around the corner, kids with skateboards making use of the hallways for tricks. I gather my things I want to keep. It would be a shame to just leave them here. I step outside and leave.

Waking up just before 1 p.m.

White Apricot. Banana. Orange Juice.

Elliott texts me about an Independence Day get-together at his house. I ask him about inviting other people.

Him: “Yeah sure. Keep it smallz though. Too many people. It gets complicated.”

Me: “that’s true for anything.”

Chatting with Emily on the phone over her recent break-up with Wesley.

Scrambled Eggs. Tortilla Chips with Fresh Guacamole. Honey Green Tea.

Watching Undocumented (2010).

Errands.

Tweaking.

Chocolate.

The other day there was a rather unsettling conclusion between Kristin and I through messages on Facebook. I’m just lost as to what’s going on. I feel not as connected anymore. But I think it’s for the better, on my end and her end.

It’s almost 9 p.m. and the oceanfront is brewing with the patriot masses. I hop on my bike and ride to Elliott’s house on 16th street where he’s invited everyone we know. Driving a car at this hour would surely be a death sentence. I arrive in the driveway. Beers and Hard Lemonades in the cooler. Lawn chairs spread out. As predicted Elliott built a mini-rocket to launch. It is short-lived but exciting.

Some kid named Lee brought a bottle of whiskey. I take a few swigs. Snacking on a Veggie Burger. It’s a perfect summer night for Independence Day. The fireworks start. We migrate to the third floor porch and observe. Appropriately we chime into a Star-Spangled Banner chant – singing as loud and obnoxiously as we can.

Moving on...to the beach. Some dive into the ocean. Some of us stay behind on the sand. It’s strange how lively the beach becomes after 1 a.m. A lot of other people have the same idea. I mean the sun could be out and everything would look normal. Beach nights are more desirable anyway. Talking with Joey DiNardo on the lifeguard stand. I haven’t seen him since the 1623 days really.

Me: “It feels good to be where I’m at right now...literally. I feel independent, Joey.”

The night dwindles and I hop back on my bike. Margot hit me up earlier so I decide to drop by her place and say hi. Before we get a few sentences in her roommate Emily barges out of her bedroom belligerent drunk and paranoid. Margot is needed by her, so I leave and finish the trek home.

Leftover Spaghetti.

Relaxing with a movie.

Sleep pretty late after 4 a.m.

Congregating around a picnic table with friends just outside my old high school. One of them talks about their science teacher and how cool and spacey she is.

“Her name’s Miss Larley. She’s kind of eccentric and strange. You should get her. I think you’d like her.”

I make my way through the familiar entrance and trot down the long narrow hallway. I feel my walk is substantially different from when I used to roam these halls as a teenager. I find a front desk of sorts. Two clerks, male and female, ask if they can help me.

Me: “Yeah. Can I get a print out of my schedule please?”

Female: “Well it’s going to be 20 for the t-shirt and 40 for...”

Basically I’m being told to buy a package that includes my printed schedule. I’m given a look of silence as if they’re waiting on me to give them money.

I make myself clearer, “I’m sorry. I just want to know where my classes are. I don’t want to buy any products.”

It still doesn’t cross their mind how simple of a request I’m making. The male walks over to a phone and makes a call.

Getting out of bed at 1:34 p.m.

White Apricots. Banana.

Errands.

Grilled Cheese with Tomato on a Bagel. Salt n Vinegar Chips. Honey Green Tea.

At the storage unit rehearsing through a few select songs that prove the most difficult. Then packing up and scooping up Calum, Darren, and Devon from the house. We trek out to Norfolk for the show. It’s at a church in Park Place called Aletheia – down in a spacious cool basement.

It’s a small crowd of people. But Tristan Stewart shows up at random.

Me: “Tristan Stewart! You’ve returned!”

He was stationed in Qatar for about six months and just got off a plane a few hours before the show.

...

I open the set with a few originals and covers. Feeling comfortable about the sound mix and confident about my performance. Snacking on Trail Mix and Lemonade. Goodwill Falcon goes up next with their synth-driven electronic pop, setting a nice atmosphere. All of us sitting in old wooden chairs. I just let my ears breath in the sonic goodness. Then, Rugby from Lynchburg plays their fierce piano-driven experimental pop music.

Calum and I return to the house while the rest of the crew goes out to Baja’s. He fumbles on the piano experimenting with melodies while I cook dinner...

Spaghetti with Onions, Mushrooms, Peppers, and Tomato Basil Sauce. Bagel Garlic Bread.

Enjoying dinner to the sound of classical on the radio.

Benjamin and Rachel pop in for a visit.

...

In reference to remnants of glitter still scattered about the house from Kevin’s birthday I inform my company, “Dude, I’ve been eating glitter, shitting glitter, living in glitter!”

...

Ben and I spark a high school-nostalgic conversation about the people we used to know as teenagers.

They leave.

...

Darren, Devon, Tristan, and James pile in through the front door. James impresses us with his versatile fart noise abilities. He’s able to show us ten different ways of producing flatulence. This instills a much needed laughter spell.

...

I hear the warm sounds of a piano ballad coming from the radio – a familiar religious tune.

Me: “Oh man this is my jam.”

I turn the volume knob. A conservative operatic voice sings, “Then sings my soul, My Saviour God, to Thee, How great Thou art, How great Thou art!”

James and I sing a long cheerfully.

I got a text from Margot that says, “Hi. I miss you. Can we hang out?” Why not? I clean up, take a shower, and head over to her place for a sleepover. And that’s all it really is. Just a little snuggling before we drift off to sleep at 3 a.m.

Alarm goes off at 11:11 a.m.

White Apricots. Orange Juice.

All day shift at China Wok.

Some hot lunchtime deliveries.

Stopping for my own lunch at the house. I’m fortunate enough to not receive any orders for the next hour so I use my time wisely by cleaning up the previous night’s mess – smashing numerous beer cans – breaking down boxes – dishes – sweeping up tons of glitter.

Grilled Cheese with Tomato. Honey Green Tea.

I text Kevin in regards to using a Shop-Vac instead of our vacuum cleaner to suck up the rice and bulkier particles that were used to celebrate in his bedroom. I feel inclined to mention something I rarely mention to him...

Me: “even though you can be a messy presence in the house, you light up my life and give me something I would say is more entertaining than all the movies on Netflix could ever offer me. all that to say...I love you man. I expect a kiss next time I see you.”

Him: “I expect a blowjob the next time I see you.”

Me: “you got it!”

Delivering an order to an apartment in Emerald Point. The lady opens the door. Two brothers hanging out on the couch, one of them playing Halo, the other in a diaper approaches and gives me the rundown of what’s going on...

Boy: “My brotha take my movies! Are you the pizza man?”

I didn’t feel like explaining to this young mind that I hold in my hands Chinese food rather than pizza for I thought he might be disappointed. So I respond with, “Yes.”

He seems pleased, retorts with, “I just farted,” and laughs at himself. The mother acts a little embarrassed and apologizes.

Tortilla Chips with Fresh Guacamole.

Dinnertime deliveries begin and the sun subsides to which I am utterly grateful.

More Orange Juice.

I’m blessed with Nicole’s presence for the last leg of my shift. She left town for a while with plans to not return but had to take care of a few things. We caught each other on the road yesterday.  So I invited her to ride around with me tonight. Just like talking with Amanda yesterday it feels like a little reunion. As well we used to hang out frequently about this time last year. Nostalgia can be exhausting.

...

Driving down Laskin about to deliver my last order. A cop at random pulls me over because the new paint job conflicts with the information on my registration. He suspected it could be stolen. He’s nice about everything when I explain I had an accident two weeks ago.

Cop: “Unfortunately for you I had nothing to do and I ran your tags.”

Nicole and I share a few laughs after he lets me go.

Off work and back home.

Egg, Broccoli, and Snow Peas with Rice. Land Shark Lager.

Watching The Line (2007).

At the storage unit practicing songs on the guitar for tomorrow’s show.

Back home.

A little bit of Caramel Cheesecake Ice Cream.

Sleep 4 a.m.

Sometime before 9 a.m. Kristin is awake and restless, vying for attention and affection. I’m beat and need more rest. I knew this would be the case. It’s kind of adorable though. She rolls around in bed attempting to talk and cuddle. I’m just no good though.

Me: “You’re such an early morning bird.”

...

Her: “Why can’t you get it up?”

Me: “I don’t know. I already told you. I guess issues turn me off.”

Her: “I’m sorry.”

...

She finally agrees to be still and fall back to sleep.

...

Waking up at 11:30 a.m.

White Apricots. Blueberries. Orange Juice.

All day shift at China Wok.

“Feeeeel the day. The hottest day!”

91 degrees but feels like 105.

Peanut Butter Bagel. Tortilla Chips with Guacamole and Salsa. Honey Green Tea.

Snapping the peas.

I invite Amanda Paramore to “ride the China Wok train”, as we call it. She hitches a ride from a friend and hops into the passenger seat of my car. Towards the end of last summer she became a really good friend to me. Introducing her to some tunes I’ve been listening to lately and reminiscing on the things we all did this time last year – night beach adventures with friends – the philosophical gatherings at Nicole’s house.

She comments on the atmosphere of being inside my car...

Her: “It’s like a whole other world in here. I feel like you own Virginia Beach in this car.”

Me: “That’s the idea.”

Back home.

Shenanigans involving the usual disaster masters, Skippy and Joshua, all in the name of Kevin’s birthday. There’s glitter and water balloons everywhere.

Hot and Sour Soup. Shrimp Egg Roll. Spring Rolls. Dos Equis Beer.

At Rick’s Café with Darren, Devon, Tara, and Calum.

Sipping on an Iced Vanilla Coffee.

Amanda texts me, “Man. Tonight was really magical. I don’t know if you felt that too, but for me it was great. With the sunset sky and the summer air and the music and the company and your voice and your car – a world all it’s own. I feel like I’ve healed something. Thanks for the time.”

Me: “That magic you’re referring to I am fortunate enough to experience every day that I work. I like the world that I’ve created in my car. I feel safe.”

Her: “I felt safe too! It’s amazing. You’ve built a magical thing for sure.”

It’s already after 1 a.m. but I retreat to the storage unit anyway because I need to brush through songs for the show I’m doing Tuesday.

Back home. Sleep 4 a.m.
