Rocko's Modern Life. Jeffrey Cruz.[i]

Waking up later than usual. 1 p.m.

Blueberry Bagel with Butter. Frozen Banana. Brown Rice Green Tea.

Spending about an hour working on a new Pinball Locomotive song with Anthony and Kevin.

The rain falls from the sky washing away all that stinkin’ pollen.

Errands.

Ginger Peanut Noodles with Egg and Tomatoes. Orange Juice.

Watching Bully (2011).

This doesn’t really capture what the documentary is about but one of the victims of bullying says this, “Girls are like candy. Sometimes you want, like, a Hershey’s bar, sometimes you want a Snicker’s bar. You can’t really tell which one you want. Sometimes you want, like, a Popsicle. It’s a complicated feeling.”

Rotating my tires on my own with a car jack and cinder blocks.

Apple.

Hanging out at Leslie’s house. I was going to use the treadmill but we get caught up in 90’s nostalgia watching some of the Nickelodeon TV shows our generation used to watch when we were kids like Doug, Salute Your Shorts, Rocko’s Modern Life, etc.

...

Eating a Salad.

...

Earlier while on the phone she explained the kind of disastrous and frustrating day she was having including scenarios such as spending an unnecessarily long time at the bank, a bagel catching fire in the microwave, frustration with getting her left contact in, and feeling feverish. I point out while watching an episode of Rocko’s Modern Life that Rocko’s life is similar to the day she had. Exaggerated, but close.

Me: “Momma told you there’d be days like this. Momma said.”

Darren Eating Breakfast (April 11 2013)*

☼ ○ ▬

Crowds of people come swarming in through the double glass doors. I spot a few familiar faces from high school. I don’t know why we’re all gathered here. It feels like I’m in high school again and so I ask my new friends if they feel the same, “Doesn’t it feel like we’re in high school again?”

“Not really,” a tall one replies. He asks, “What high school did you go to?”

I answer with a school I didn’t attend, “Killing.” He doesn’t seem to understand what I say so I spell it out, “K-I-L-L-I-N-G.”

But then the guy standing next to me who actually attended school there corrects me, “No. It’s K-E-E-L-I-N-G.”

I play it off, “Yeah. Yeah. That’s right.”

Waking up around noon.

Cinnamon Brown Sugar Oatmeal with Milk. Baked Cinnamon Brown Sugar Grapefruit. Oolong Tea.

Catching up on writing.

Egg Sandwich with Mayonnaise and Tomato. Pita Chips with Salsa and Avocado.

Watching Clay Pigeons (1998).

My box of Alenka Chocolates came in the mail today. After getting a small taste of these morsels in Russia I couldn’t resist ordering more.

Alenka Chocolate (April 11 2013)*

I grab my bike and ride to the basketball courts near Mill Dam and First Colonial. Shooting some hoops by myself but then two Chinese dudes show up. I call up Anthony to bike out here for a two-on-two opportunity. He arrives. We play our best and prove victorious two games in a row. They just weren’t aggressive enough. Anthony even tries to distract them with conversation during the game while they converse in their native language to each other. It’s kind of comical. But overall it was a fair match.

Apple.

Black Beans with Mixed Vegetables and Rice.

Attempting to practice some music at the storage unit but my storage unit neighbors are blasting the radio making it hard for me to focus.

On the way back home I decide to check out the dumpster behind Beach Bagel Bakery. Seven bags of perfectly fresh bagels. Perfect.

Popcorn and Alenka Chocolates.

I’ve started an acting career and got set up with a woman agent who matches my age. We’re having a meeting at a desk, which is oddly situated outside off a neighborhood road. She presents to me an offer for a voice-over acting role in an upcoming cartoon show. It’s not exactly what I had in mind but she’s convinced this will be a good kick-start for my career. In moments I give a few examples of my cartoon voice skills. During this whole meeting there’s been a sense of professionalism between her and I. But later in an office...I thank her for the opportunities and I’m about to say goodbye. We hug. And the hug lasts longer than it should in a business relationship. But there’s chemistry and a mutual attraction brewing. The scene turns into a modest porno. I grope her lower back and then her ass. I’m breathing hard. Her anxious body movements take over. The blinds in the windows are pulled up letting the sun shine in just right. I didn’t see this coming at all.

▬ ○ ☼

Waking up naturally at 10:40 a.m. but also from the heat in my room. Someone cranked the temperature on the thermostat up two degrees (72), which causes the air to stop flowing. I set it to 70 yesterday. I’ve found that’s the perfect setting to keep the house in a comfortable zone. It’s amazing what two degrees can do.

Peanut Butter English Muffin. Baked Cinnamon Brown Sugar Grapefruit. Oolong Tea.

Spring cleaning! After fixing the vacuum cleaner I vacuum the stairwell, the upstairs hallway, and my bedroom. Darren I guess gets inspired, which is quite a rarity, and cleans up the pigsty of a patio we have in the backyard. I place one of the wooden lounge chairs on the rooftop of my car. Darren hops on top and yells out for all to hear, “Vote for Hugo Chavez! Hugo Chavez!”

Vote for Hugo Chavez! (April 10 2013)†

Egg Sandwich with Tomato and Mayonnaise. Pita Chips with Hummus. Black Tea.

Arts and crafts time in the dining room with James, Leslie, and Darren. I paint a Ford mini hubcap that Darren keeps calling a distributor cap.

Distributor Cap (April 10 2013)*

The sun is out in full energy and the pollen in the air is thick. James and I grab our bikes and meet at the King Neptune statue on 30th Street to link up with Elliott, Michelle, Kenney, Kevin, and Don. Now as a bike gang we cruise along the boardwalk, then along the back road of Oceanfront Avenue, and eventually to First Landing State Park at the 64th Street entrance. James and I ride the hilly bike trail along the inlet and through the Spanish moss forest passing groups of bored teenagers smoking on the benches and skinny-dipping into the water.

...

Pizza at Beach Bella.

...

Flipper McCoy’s arcade fun. Battling out with Elliott at air hockey in a theatric competitive fashion. Hurting my finger from the flying puck. A few rounds of pinball. I watch James have his try at it while a potbellied dude with no shirt on plays next to him.

Pinball Boys (April 10 2013)*

Strikes and Spares (April 10 2013)*

Trackin' That Single (April 10 2013)*

Loitering on the strip and eating Ice Cream. We run into Minnie. She just got off work from the old times photos place.

...

James and I meet up with Darren and Art at Chicho’s for the beer pong tournament. It’s free to play and the cash prize is $150. We hang out for quite a while. The first match we lose pretty badly to two girls. The second match we lose but with only one cup left.

My little text conversation with Margot yesterday instigated another little text conversation tonight. This time its not so insulting. She’s down the block at Harpoon Larry’s, the bar she works at and also frequents on a regular basis. She wants me to stop by and say hi. I figure what’s the harm in that. So I bike over there. Inside, she smiles and gives me a big hug. A few of her friends are around. We sit down on the bar stools and chat about what’s going on in our lives. She’s kind of seeing this guy who she refers to as “a giant”. But when she tries to pry into my love life it becomes a harsh interrogation. She takes on the role of jealous ex-girlfriend and threatens to bash whatever girl I was/am seeing face in. It’s disrespectful but I know it’s only her language, her way of saying to me I’m not comfortable hearing or knowing you’re with other people, which doesn’t make sense because we have absolutely no obligations to one another and she’s been seeing other people up and down since we broke up. I start to question why I’m here. We take our conversation outside in the parking lot. In her car. She’s crying at some point. But through all the ridiculous things that come out of her mouth she manages to counteract them in return by saying things like, “I’m such a hypocrite [to be judging me].” and “I don’t know why I’m such a jealous bitch.” I guess she expects to be friends again and have normal meet ups. She was hoping over time that would be possible. I myself sometimes hope the same. But here we are in her Ford Fiesta being reminded of old bitter feelings of jealousy and animosity. I think it’s funny I had that dream two nights ago where a very similar conversation happened just like this with her.

Me: “You’re just tense. And now I’m tense. Just relax.”

Her: “You’re just so different than all the other guys I’ve been seeing.”

Me: “Of course. You’re trying different types. You used to be attracted to my type.”

After moments of resolve she insists I come home with her because she’s sad. I hold on to my wits and say no a thousand times because, “No, Margot. That doesn’t feel right to me.”

“What! Why?” She assures, “We’re not gonna do anything.”

Me: “Yeah I understand that. But it’s not good.”

She gets a little upset about it but eventually I depart the car calmly with a kiss on the cheek and a warm embrace.

Biking towards home, the wind blowing against my direction. It was a night of severe recollection.

Waking up just after 11 a.m.

Strawberry Toaster Pastries. Orange Juice.

Researching world maps...

Running some errands. At Moe’s Music talking with Chuck, the owner, about using the music shop to teach piano out of. He’s an older experienced musician who opened this shop about 25 years ago. I remember this place when I was a kid. And now I’m going to be a piano instructor here.

Then, at Chartway talking with a helpful lady in an office about getting my credit card limit raised.

Then, at Liberty Tax sorting out some minor problems with my tax returns.

Back home.

Grilled Cheese with Tomato and Hummus. Salt n Vinegar Chips. Black Tea.

Skype chat with Aysena. She’s been feeling sad about life...

...

“You know no matter what we’ll always be friends.”

We entertain the idea of getting married, but not seriously, I mean it’s nowhere near that level. It’s really not. It’s just an entertaining thought. Either way it’s fun to picture having a traditional wedding in Yakutsk, her Siberian homeland. And then having one in America. And just the idea of two lovers from two different sides of the world being together is romantic and idealistic.

I also scheduled a Skype chat with Yana, my oldest friend from many summers ago. She lives in Moscow as well and is going through some drastic changes in her life. We philosophize about the meaning of music, love, and other such things.

...

Yana: “Some music I think is above emotions.”

...

Yana: “Some questions seem like they don’t have answers.”

...

Yana: “I still want to find and understand the universal rules.”

Me: “Good luck.”

I take my mountain bike out for a test run after sitting in my room all winter. It’s a little rusty but still rides good. Unplanned I run into Elliott on his bike when exiting Chanticleer. He joins me at the basketball courts near First Colonial and VB Blvd. We shoot the shit and shoot the hoops.

...

Back at the house.

General camaraderie in the dining room with most of the housemates and friends. Kevin’s bare-chested, his whole front side red from sunburn. He’s sporting this new brown leather jacket with an American flag on the back that Kelley brought back from the thrift store, a truly great image.

Salmon with Kale, Carrots, Onions, Mushrooms, and Rice. Beer.

I get caught up in some brainteaser puzzle thing online.

It’s funny that I had a dream about Margot because guess who texted me today? I haven’t spoken with her in a long time. Either way she asks me some informational question about a Mae tour with Plain White T’s. She also knows I went to Russia. In her classic non-confrontational and almost laughable attitude she asks, “So I guess your back in the states. How were all the Russian hoes you banged?”

I disregard the question, “I’m back from the motherland where it snowed everyday. Good times.”

She continues, “I bet those slut’s vaginas kept you nice and warm huh?”

I continue to disregard her statements, “You know its funny you texted me today because I had a dream about you the night before.”

Her: “I had a dream with you last night. Where I was beating up all the skanks you fucked. I just hope you didn’t get any stds from those whores in that dirty country.”

She’s always had a talent at being irreverently presumptuous and confrontational.

Black Sheep.[i]

Alarm goes off at 10:40 a.m. I’m getting used to this waking up with ample time to get ready. It’s a much more relaxing way to start off the day.

Peanut Butter English Muffin. Baked Grapefruit with Cinnamon and Brown Sugar. Black Indian Tea.

All day shift at China Wok.

Lentil Wrap with Tomato, Hummus, and Mustard. Goldfish Crackers. Banana. Lemon Water.

Having a few realizations that half frighten me and half amaze me. I never thought about how often I use the word dude; it’s a regular term in my vocabulary. I don’t know if it’s just a beach thing or what. And I realize how amazing wireless technology is. I mean how is it even possible? Nobody really stops to think about it. I mean just imagine all this two-dimensional data floating through the air right above our heads.

The day just drags and drags and drags. It’s a typical slow Monday.

Blueberry Acai Greek Yogurt. Kinder Chocolate.

Nothing but measly $2 tips here and there.

Fried Chicken with Carrots, Onions, Broccoli, and Rice in Garlic Sauce.

Finally off work and raking in almost less than half of what I usually make for a full workday. I guess you can’t win them all.

Waking up naturally just after 10 a.m. I try to go back to sleep but I can’t. The temperature in my room is just warm enough to be uncomfortable.

Settling down with some fresh Cinnamon Oatmeal with Banana, Brown Sugar, and Milk. Sipping on some Black Indian Tea. Aysena recorded a cute video of her singing “Love Me Tender” and left it on Facebook with a private setting for only us to view. I’m smiling so big. She’s so adorable.

Cecily offers me an Egg Roll because there’s a hole in it and they can’t sell it.

There’s some slow time after the small dinner rush. Ling shows me this article about an abandoned skyscraper in Detroit and we engage in a deep discussion on government assistance, the difference between the way America’s government treats it’s citizens and the way China treats it’s citizens. The mentality is so different here in America where most people don’t work fulltime and then also receive the government’s help. In China there’s a necessity to work and make your own living because there is no assistance from The Man. It’s the reason why I see my bosses work EVERY DAY, all day. It’s strange to think about.

...

I point at the laptop screen and show Ling the word overpopulation translated to Chinese in Google Translate. “There. That’s the reason for all our problems.”

In a bar full of foreigners, mostly Russians. I’m trying to avoid the mafia who is on the lookout for any suspicious or out of place characters. While opening a door hatch from the stairwell I spot a roll of two five-dollar bills and a one-dollar bill stuffed into the hinge. I snatch it. There was a man passing through before me. I felt compelled to give him $5 from it because he also saw it. He thanks me in Russian, “спасибо.”
“It was eleven dollars!” I announce. At this point I realize speaking English could give my identity away so I cower from the floor and attempt to exit the building.

I planned on hanging out with Leslie tonight at her house in Little Neck. I drive over and of course she’s not answering her house phone or her cell phone. I predict she’s showering more than likely. Luckily, instead of waiting around the fitness room above the garage is unlocked so I sneak in there and use the treadmill until she calls.

...

I was right. She was in the shower. Hanging out in the kitchen. She lets me cook us a meal using things from the fridge, which her parents keep fully stocked. I already brought some lentils to start off with. She’s got Telekinesis (the band) playing through their Sonos surround sound system. We sit down to eat Lentils with Mushrooms, Onions, Yellow Peppers, Black Bean Sauce and a Brown Rice/Quinoa Mix.

Me: “You might need to add soy sauce. You can judge it for yourself.”

Leslie: “I might not need to add anything. Don’t you know if something’s gonna taste like cardboard I’m probably gonna love it?”

Me: “Then you’re gonna love this thing.”

...

Me: “Most of my productive time is spent on the computer. I do a lot of things on the computer.”

Sarcastically she inputs, “Like look at porn.”

Me: “Nooo. That’s not productive.”

Leslie: “I’m pretty sure that looking at porn can yield some kind of......product.”

Me: “Yes, but it’s not productive in the sense that...I’m not moving forward in life by looking at porn. It goes in the entertainment section.”

...

We get into a discussion about friends and evaluating the purpose of particular persons in our lives, how that’s important.

...

Cleaning the stovetop is a tedious task that is absolutely necessary according to Leslie because of her dad’s insanely high clean standards.

...

I pull out my Virginia Slims playing cards from 1985. The women figures on the face cards make Leslie really curious about the message behind the design. So we spend some time analyzing the deck and the purpose of a cigarette company producing such a deck of cards marketed to women.

Leslie Analyzes VA Slims Cards (April 4 2013)

We settle down in the living room on the leather couch and put on a film called The Comedy (2012) about an aging hipster in Williamsburg. It’s kind of a slow purposeless movie with a few rare comedic awkward moments. Leslie builds a pillow kingdom on her side of the couch while I slouch dramatically on my side.

At the Lynnhaven Middle School basketball courts shooting some ball. Then running a few laps on the track field. It’s a beautifully sunny day with a slightly chilly breeze. It feels good to be back outside accelerating the blood flow.

Lentil Wrap with Mustard and Tomatoes. Goldfish Crackers.

It’s my turn to clean the bathrooms.

Apple and Lindt Chocolate.

Hanging out with James and Darren. I convince Darren to use his employment benefits at Chanello’s to get a discount on a large cheese pizza. After retrieving it I consume four slices along with some Kale and Carrots. I will discover later on in the night that this will create inner gaseous turmoil in my stomach.

We plan a poker night at the Russian’s apartment in Chapel Lake. I haven’t seen Art, Jamil, and Roma in quite a while. With $5 buy-ins the pot eventually reaches $50. After James and I lose out it’s left to Darren, Calum, and Art to battle it out. We don’t want to stick around for the outcome and decide to join some of the other Russian peeps at Central 111 down off Great Neck for hookah and dancing. There’s hardly anybody here but that doesn’t stop five of us guys from tearing up the silvery dance floor.

Dead Flowers (a) (Apr 2 2013)[i]

☼ ○ ▬

I’ve involuntary conjoined with a small bunch of people. We’ve set out on a long road trip to escape arrest from something. Our car is a compact Oldsmobile circa the 90’s and it’s packed to the brim with our belongings. It’s not clear how any of us are going to fit comfortably in this clunker car. Before we leave we have to attend this concert. Off the side we’re conversing with the venue’s bouncers/security, understandably big muscled. They jeer at particular individuals in the crowd. There’s major pretense in their attitude. Somehow they’ve sort of sided with our kind. It’s time to leave but Elliott has misplaced a few things of ours, one of those things being my phone. I didn’t even realize he lost it until I see a police officer with a flashlight scanning the grass along the fence. Nothing comes up. I peek down a narrow manmade hole in the ground and locate my phone inside perched on a tiny ledge a little over an arm’s length away. Inside a van I find a windshield scraper with a soft brush tip and use it to pull in my phone. It’s a tedious task because one false move and the phone drops further into the hole...gone...forever. It works and we gather our things to depart this forsaken place.

A pot bellied white man and a short Asian lady with a Bluetooth in her ear are waiting at a table when I walk into the restaurant. I have no choice but to listen to their broken conversation. The lady speaks with a heavy accent and an absentminded loud mouth, a sound that really disturbs me. The man engages with her in utter appeasement, the kind of personality that will constantly nod his head and overly agree with anything the other person says. He keeps repeating things because she keeps talking and never really listens. The phone rings and I have to cup one ear in order to hear the customer on the phone because of how obnoxious these people’s interaction are. Maybe I’m not so much annoyed as I am just entertained.

70 degrees Fahrenheit outside! It has to be the first official day of Spring, or at least it’s the first I’ve experienced this year. The ice cream trucks are cruising through the neighborhoods with the “Entertainer” song on repeat. The church bells are ringing as I hop onto the First Colonial interstate ramp. The sight of more bicyclists and skateboarders is normal. Hello, Sun.

I’m stuck in a different country, hard to tell which one. I’m sworn into an American volunteer group that helps poor children. But things take a dramatic dark turn. It’s understood our land vehicles have been equipped with bombs that will go off any minute. My fellow leader that resembles the actress Sandra Bullock insists that we stay with the vehicle no matter what to show honor and commitment. We all gather around and hold hands. Nothing happens. None of this makes sense to me. I grab her hand and in an assuring voice say, “We don’t need to be martyrs. Maybe now’s not the time.” So we disperse. But up the hill are various soldiers and strangers marching in our direction ready to seize us. From a distance a cop tries to shock me with a Taser gun but I avoid it somehow. Eventually I’m being led by a boy teenager who seems hospitable enough even though he’s probably not supposed to be. He’s confused as to why I’m so calm. He kind of leaves me and I realize it’s on purpose to test me. I crawl on my hands and knees along the grass through a long line of big construction machines. They slowly drop their mechanical arms in such a way that if I don’t move along I’ll be killed. I keep moving at a quick pace. I make it to a long foggy stretch of field. I’m greeted by another boy teenager with glasses. I’m taken to a warehouse room where boxes are being sorted. Maybe this is a drug operation. The other boy is here too. I realize I’ve been chewing on a diamond-shaped piece of glass this whole time. Proud of my possession I show it off to my new partners.

It’s Easter Sunday. Jesus has risen, but I’m still going to China Wok for an all day work shift.

For the first two hours or so it rains. It feels like the city is revitalized now. It smells fresh.

Hard Boiled Egg, Five Guys French Fries with Ketchup, and Honey Green Tea.

While driving around I think about Aysena’s face, more specifically her infamous sad face, the frown of the century, and those few sporadic freckles on her face that resemble a connect-the-dots page.

On the down time I read this article about a genius physicist who fell in love with a young woman online and was caught smuggling drugs unknowingly, a wildly humorous, suspenseful, and slightly tragic story.

My bosses are eating Chanello’s pizza today. They normally eat the same foods daily but for some reason today they decided on pizza.

Kinder Chocolate.

The day continues quite steadily.

Emily Hill drops by to visit. I was surprised to get a text from her. She happened to be at the beach trying to kill some time.

While waiting at the First Colonial/Laskin Rd stoplight one of those big 4x4’s pulls up behind me. His blinding bright headlights of course shine through my mirrors making my eyes squint. This is a typical scenario with any 4x4 trucks of this kind. Their height is just high enough to flash right into my eyes. It’s a pet peeve of mine, as I’m sure is anybody else’s. But this guy actually shuts off his headlights altogether during the wait to turn green as a kind gesture. I’m in shock. I’ve never come across a considerate truck driver. Most of them are so oblivious and too egotistical to think about the other drivers around them.

Finally off work after what seems like a long day.

Waking up at 10:40 a.m.

Strawberry Toaster Pastries. Orange Juice. Banana.

All day shift at China Wok.

It’s a warm day in March. I think I even take off my jacket at some point.

When interacting with Aysena online, and especially when writing messages back and forth, sometimes she comes up with interesting sentences. Here’s something she said while critiquing the photos I recently posted from Russia: “Let’s hide my beauty from other’s eyes. Put me in gold jail.” Haha. Without even knowing it she’s composing great American poetry.

Mesquite Almonds. Edamame Crackers with Hummus. Tea.

Having a nice lengthy phone conversation with my mom.

Mom: “I see how living simply is much more rewarding.”

She’s been going through some heavy changes. Her and Jimmy are separating. It’s actually really strange to think about because Jimmy’s been my stepdad for over 13 years. He was the best thing that happened to my mom. At the time she really needed somebody like him.

“But I’m very happy right now,” she says. “In the past 4 years I’ve been in Florida a lot has changed. I’ve been uncovering things I didn’t even realize were there inside of me.”

It’s dreadfully slow before dinnertime. I’m just sitting here researching the history of a Russian chocolate factory and reading some short stories.

Even when the night falls the deliveries still aren’t substantial but all things considering I fare pretty well in tips.

Fried Shrimp with Broccoli, Carrots, Onions, and Rice in Garlic Sauce.

Off work and back home.

Excerpt from The Kiss by Chekhov.[i]

Waking up just after 11 a.m.

Instant Blueberry Oatmeal. Blood Orange. Honey White Green Tea.

Catching up on bills and adult things.

Grilled Potatoes, Onions, Peppers, and Egg on a Bagel. Salt n Vinegar Chips. Blueberry Green Tea. Kinder Chocolate.

Errands.

This warm weather is quite a contrast after being in such cold weather all the time in Russia. It feels good to be home.

Organizing all the thousands of photos I took on the trip.

Rick’s Café meeting with Elliott and Leslie.

Fried Flounder with Broccoli, Mac n Cheese, and Texas Toast.

Sharing some artifacts I found at a thrift store in St. Petersburg including vintage stickers from a 1992 French sitcom, a handmade English learning book for a Russian child, children’s books, and buttons.

Once again there’s nonsensical partying going on at the house. I don’t understand why in the days that I’ve returned home the kids have decided to go hard. I’m getting too old for this stuff. I’m past this kind of angst in my life. I try my best to avoid leaving the bedroom for fear of having to encounter anybody associated with the madness. It’s not that dreadful of a fear but I blow it up in my head. I just want privacy in my home. I want quiet.

By Alexandre Alexeieff[i]

Alarm goes off early at 9:20 a.m. I feel Aysena’s arms reach out to me. She’s making mmm sounds and smiling so bright. The ugly brown floral wallpaper shimmers from the sunlight slipping in through the window. I never thought this day would come, the day I would come to Russia, and now I’m leaving it just as quick as it came. We get up and move quickly through the metro and make it just in time to catch the next Aerotrain to the airport.

Eating a Cheese Danish, French Baguette, and sharing Airborne Water. She slips her head into my shoulder. I wrap my arm around her. I witness the saddest face I have ever seen. She’s so full of love and affection. It’s a good thing I snagged a roll of toilet paper for my runny nose and her watery eyes.

At the Moscow airport. There’s an overwhelming sadness that grips us by our tender hearts. What is it about the word miss that makes my lips tremble and my eyes heavy with salty liquid? As soon as I say, “I’m gonna miss you,” I can’t stop my eyes from tearing up. She’s crying but it’s not so dramatic. We know we’ll see each other another time in the future, but then again no one’s promised a guaranteed reunion. It’s strange to think I’ve spent every waking hour with her in Russia for about nine days. And now I’m cut off. Now I’m returning to America to continue my regular life.

On the plane now – New York bound. A nine-hour flight is nothing to be concerned with. They serve us airline food almost immediately. Gotta love the airline food. Again I’m given the vegetarian version, just vegetables and fruits and bread and such.

...

Watching an in-flight movie: Life of Pi (2012). I read the book a few years ago and it stole my heart. It’s thrilling to see it come to life through a moving picture.

...

Sipping on Tea and reading a few Russian short stories: The Queen of Spades by Pushkin and Twenty-six Men and a Girl by Maxim Gorky.

“There are men to whom the most precious and best thing in their lives appears to be some disease of the soul or body. They spend their whole life in relation to it, and only living by it, suffering from it, they sustain themselves on it, they complain of it to others, and so draw the attention of their fellows to themselves. For that they extract sympathy from people, and apart from it they have nothing at all. Take from them that disease, cure them, and they will be miserable, because they have lost their one resource in life—they are left empty then. Sometimes a man’s life is so poor, that he is driven instinctively to prize his vice and to live by it; one may say for a fact that often men are vicious from boredom.”

The plane lands and with just enough time it seems for me to transit to Manhattan from JFK. I walk briskly to the Airtrain, then to the subway (A train to the F train). Surprised I was able to make it to the China bus station on time and even with a few minutes to spare.

...

Across the street at a convenient store. The Chinese clerk doesn’t take cards, only cash. Not a problem for me but a problem for the well-dressed northern man after me. He only needs one more dollar to purchase his beer. For some reason I feel compelled to offer a dollar. He thanks me and offers to buy me Chinese food when the bus stops.

Snacking on some Chips and Strawberry Kombucha Tea.

On the bus. It’s a culture shock to be surrounded by “Americans” and actually understand the murmur of conversations around me.

...

Stop at a service station off the New Jersey Turnpike. Two Hard Boiled Eggs should suffice. I’m jetlagged as shit. If I was in Moscow now I would already be asleep. But I still have more “day” to deal with. I take a nap for the last leg of the trip. James and Stephanie pick me up from the bus station when I arrive around midnight.

“So how was Russia?”

“Cold.”

At the house. James and I walk in. He was forewarned by a friend via text that there were people running around without shirts on. As I’m stepping into my room I hear commotion and partying coming from Anthony and Kelley’s bedroom. A group of half naked boys and girls come running out periodically...nothing out of the ordinary. Welcome home, Robert.

Kinder Chocolate.

Settling down and unpacking. It feels nice to be non-nomadic.

I hear Kevin serenading Josh and Haley on the violin downstairs while they attempt to make love.

Russian Adventures (March 2013)*

Waking up around 11 a.m. and feeling much better. Despite all the commotion last night from the other guests in the hostel it was probably the quietest sleep I’ve had on this trip. I’m grateful to get a good night’s rest.

...

After engaging in a zesty sexcapade with Aysena on the floor we lie down on the bed breathing sighs of relief.

She says, “You should like girl that doesn’t love herself.”

Me: “What do you mean? What are you?”

Her: “I’m girl that loves herself. It would work better if you were with ‘nother girl. You can be free.”

I can kind of grasp what she’s trying to say and I partially agree but living in denial is my vice. Either way I’m not thinking about these things in this moment. I’m just relishing.

Hot Tea and Dried Apricots.

Tristan has left for London so now it’s just her and I, but only for one more day. We go to our favorite place for food, the Japanese Noodle Shop. This will be my third visit here and I’m not sick of it yet. Getting a bowl of Noodles with Egg, Seaweed Salad, Eggplant Tempura, and Apple Cranberry Juice.

Princess Tarakanova. Painted by Konstantin Flavitsky†

While walking the snowy streets of the city she’s always talking about people being in love and how a city like this needs love...

Ays: “We need it! In Virginia Beach you can just work and hang out with friends. But not in Moscow. It’s too cold. Too many angry people. We cannot live without love.”

...

She shows me a special bridge where metal trees have been placed. All of their branches are filled with padlocks, most of them antique and old looking, each with married couples names. The trend is to buy a lock once you’re married and place it here for good fortune in your future years with each other. It’s quite incredible. Someone clever enough bought an ultra sized lock. Almost every spot on the trees are filled. Locks just keep adding up overlapping others.

I ask her, “How many of these people do you think are still married?”

Like the young idealist she is she replies with a big smile, “All of them.”

Me: “What? How?”

Ays: “Because it’s magic trees!”

Snacking on a Cheese Danish from a merchant in the underground street.

As we transport through the crowded regal underground metro train there’s an unsettling bit of knowledge we’re both holding onto: I’m leaving tomorrow. Embracing each other and holding hands as we climb the crazy long escalators.

At the Moscow Museum of Modern Art. They have a set of various warehouses with different art galleries. One of them is by Muratov Damir, which includes an American flag inspired painted wood piece meant to be a mock flag for The United States of Siberia. Aysena explains that this is a statement about how Russia is losing their culture to Westernization. It’s a joke on how Siberia seeks to be like the USA via government direction.

After this we take an excursion through the art district where the art and cinema school is located. The entrance is a wide tunnel where the train used to come through but now is a walkway and display for coming of age street art. Eventually we find a café for students and enjoy some Coffee.

Russian Adventures (March 2013)*

Today we spend a lot of time sharing our thoughts about this unique relationship that we’ve somehow kept alive despite our long distance. It’s a younger idealism (her) versus an older idealism (me). She keeps mentioning how the chemistry has changed a little in comparison to the end of last summer when she was in Virginia Beach. There’re a lot of factors involved.

She starts asking what particular punctuation marks are called in English like the comma “,” the exclamation point “!” and the period “.”.

Ays: “That’s it. This is our period for part 2.”

Me: “No. No it’s not. It’s supposed to be a trilogy at least. There’s a part 3 somewhere down the line. It’s not a period. It’s a question mark.”

Ays: “I hate question marks.”

Me: “The world is full of them. You and I both have difficulty adding periods.”

After our little heavy discussion we settle down in another café with better options for dinner. Eating some White Mushroom Fish with a Yellow Pepper, Tomatoes, French Bread, and a Sprite. We’re squeezed in next to another couple that seems to be just as affectionate as us.

Back at the hostel. Our last night together, at least for a long while. We’ll see. She’s full of adorable and cute little words and phrases. I can’t keep up with all of them. We make each other smile. It’s as simple as that. I don’t know what the future holds. And I know I’ll just go back home and continue with my former day-to-day life working at China Wok and dealing with the usual shenanigans. I really need a change though.

Good night. 3:30 a.m. (Moscow time)

Flatnik Show N Tell Party*

It’s 9 a.m. The fresh sunlight shines through the train windows. I awaken from a mediocre night of slumber, the best it can get considering the accommodations on a Russian train.

Along the walk I rehash last night’s stressful events with Aysena to see if she remembered any of it. She does mostly except for the climatic parts. She seems sorry and just smiles like she always does with that innocent and adorable look in her eye. It doesn’t matter anymore. We made it back to Moscow in one piece, or rather with all our pieces. It’s snowing quite dramatically, the most it’s snowed since I’ve been here. The snowflakes catch on my jacket and it’s possible to examine their intricate details up close. It’s still the same team of Tristan, Aysena, Aina, and myself. We locate the nearest Japanese restaurant and relax, making use of the free WiFi to plan out the day and book hostels and such.

Omelet with Tomatoes, Toast, and some of that hot Mixed Berry Juice I had the first day I was here.

Aina leaves the group and heads back home to study. Most of our day is spent traveling on the metro and checking into hostels. Tristan stays in one closer to the Aeroport train. Ays and I find a cheap one with a private room. After that we meet up with Nurgun at a Russian cafeteria-style place.

White Beans with Carrots, Borscht Soup, and an Apple Danish.

I’ve been taking notice to all the food I’ve been eating on this trip. Sometimes there’s just nothing else to do but eat and walk. I don’t mind too much cause I enjoy all the variety of options around this city.

Flatnik Show N Tell Party is tonight. It’s at a small studio apartment. Sasha, a girl I conversed with on Couch Surfing, is hosting the event and offered to help organize it. Shortly after 7:30 p.m. the local natives start piling in, most of them saw the event posted on Couch Surfing. Everybody reverently squats on the floor and listens to a short performance I give on the guitar while some video footage of an old Soviet farm projects on the ceiling behind me. I’m quite surprised at how many heads came out. I would say about 50 showed up. After I finish I invite anyone else to take the floor and share something, with the help of Sasha translating. The majority of the audience only understands English on a basic level. Ukulele, piano, and guitar performances ensue. Yana is here and gives quite the inspiring speech on the meaningless noise in life, the search for truth (or the real God) and the assurance/peace one feels with God, and how honesty can change your life. I guess it may have come off as depressing in comparison to the general mood of the congregation. But I took something substantial from it personally and I’m certain others did as well. Tristan seems to fit in well and attracts the attention of a few girls. After the Show N Tell portion is done the snack table is brought in from the kitchen and everybody just mingles. I chat with a few curious people that ask me questions about America and this and that.

I feel incredibly sick, sore throat and such. I figured it would happen eventually considering all the cold weather I’ve had to trot around in.

Back at the hostel. Sipping on plenty of Tea and Honey. Aysena sleeps before me while I reflect in the kitchen. Around me I overhear a lot of conversations in Russian but they’re easy for me to drown out since I can’t understand most of it.

Finally joining my little Ays in dreamland at 1:24 a.m.
