Kelley's NiGhT cLuB[i]

☼ ○ ▬

I've been drafted into a military force representing the country. A foreign counter-force is lined up to attack the city. It's in the near future. We're using these floating transporters to press forward in between skyscrapers. I scramble to attach time bombs to select balconies that way when the enemy comes by it surprises them. There's just not enough time. They're already pushing through the front lines. I decrease altitude as fast as I can and dip into the building on the first floor where a mall is located. It's almost like a video game now. I'm safe under this particular awning but as the enemy hovers over the building I'm supposed to aim my hands and shoot invisible photons at their ships. But for some reason I've ran out of juice. The photo energy has no punch. It does nothing. I wait until the coast is clear then climb up and join the chaos of people. It's understood the foreign enemy has seized the city by now. But there's a small bunch of people that are piling into train cars in preparation to escape. I'm wearing a hoodie jacket that covers up my military uniform. I hop into the last crowded car. But the enemy's troops are searching each car and discover who I am. They take me into custody. I finally get a close up view of who these infamous foreigners are. Their skin color is dark and brown, almost like a Somolian.

I ask one of them, "Where are you guys from anyway?"

With a gun in hand he grins with pride and answers, "The Baltic."

Alarm goes off at 11:04 a.m.

Blueberry Bagel with Cream Cheese. Orange Juice.

All day shift at China Wok.

Every week or so I like to send Ana a text reminder, "Hey. I still like you a whole lot."

She replies, "I STILL like you a lot tooooooo! I don't have any complaints about your personality.  You're always oh so sweet to me, and I obviously find it hard to let go whenever I have to leave.. Like in the morning when I go to work or whenever i have to go. Thank you for sharing your food with me last night bytheway. I can't remember if I said thank you, so I want to make sure I did! If I ever change my feelings( which I honestly don't see myself doing because I already like you and when I decide I like something or someone then I don't really change my mind about it.)I would tell you! But you know this!  It is nice to get reassurance though."

It's one of those days where you jet off to deliver an order and when you return another order is ready. And so the ballad goes on all day, one order at a time. It's a trick that makes you think it's a busy day when in actuality I'm just driving more and not reaping the great tip benefits I usually would.

God, and this sun is killing me. I hide in despair under the checkered towel while I drive to avoid sunburn.

Night falls.

While delivering to Suhtai Court for the fourth time I discover the Pizza Hut delivery man is here. I see him all the time on the road as I'm sure he notices me too. We've never had a conversation. Having a little delivery-camaraderie. He complains about the dangerous potholes in this neighborhood that we always have to avoid. As I walk off to deliver my order he comments, "Hopefully you don't encounter an entitlement mentality."

Off work and home.

Fried Chicken with Broccoli, Onions, Carrots, and Rice in Garlic Sauce.

Watching The Gift (2000).

I take a peek in Kelley's bedroom to find a small crowd of people throwing a RAGER. I hang out for a few minutes with the camera and snap some photos.

Bamm Bamm & Friends (June 14 2013)[i]

Waking up at 1:41 p.m.

Coffee with Honey and Milk.

Tweaking things in the car. Chores.

Banana.

Lentil Wrap with Hummus and Tomatoes. Tropical Flavored Coconut Water.

At the storage unit running through the Bamm Bamm set with Josiah and Josh. I learned two new songs on the bass just last night but they're fairly simple. Being an avid guitar player it's not difficult for me to pick up on the bass.

Salt n Vinegar Chips.

Scooping up Kevin and Marianne, our French couch surfer, from the house. We head to Norfolk for the big rock show at The Iguana, formerly 37th and Zen. There's an indecision on who should go first out of the four bands. So Ross, of Keisha Parker (ex-Mas Y Mas), and I play a game of foosball to decide for us. Originally we agreed that whoever wins gets to have their band perform second but instead the winner gets the opposite. It's a battle between defending your honor or losing a preferred spot on the bill. We get down to the last point but he ends up winning. Keisha Parker up first. Then, Bamm Bamm. It's probably the tightest set I've ever played with them. Everything felt right and in sync. Then, Honorary Girl and a veteran math rock band called Boneske.

While one of the bands is playing I sit with Ana enjoying a Crab Cake dinner with a Salad, French Fries, and Bread. She helps with the consuming. I notice she's made of a certain kind of insecure sweetness. She's worried how drunk she might seem after having two beers and a shot. We can't hear each other's voices because of how loud the music is. So we type things on my phone.

Her: "I'm so embarrassed being in this state in front of you."

Me: "It's okay. You're cute."

Her: "I don't wanna be just cute."

Me: "I really like your black & white striped shorts!"

Her: "Heh. They are comfy."

Back home. Enjoying a small bowl of Strawberries and uploading photos from tonight.

Communist Party Songs[i]

Waking up just before 2 p.m.

Cinnamon Raisin Bagel with Cream Cheese. Orange Juice.

Chores.

Strawberries. Egg Sandwich with Tomato and Hummus. Salt n Vinegar Chips. Honey Oolong Tea.

Watching The Rainmaker (1997).

We're supposed to have Bamm Bamm practice at the storage unit but the power is out because of the wind storm. Josiah asked me to play bass for a show tomorrow and we desperately need to rehearse. I get called into China Wok for an hour and then we meet up at the house and conduct a soft practice.

...

Later...getting into an explosive debate with Darren, Devon, and Kevin over how much rent should be expected of the living room residents like Laron, and possibly Josh McHugh. It's a sarcastic, but sometimes fiery, battle as to what's the most logical and fair figure one should have to pay. And it just turns into an ego trip. Everybody speaks out of turn. There's yelling. It's exhausting and I just can't understand how anything constructive can come of conversations like these.

Ana arrives. I take her on a walk around the neighborhood and vent about the stressful past few hours while smoking on a Djarum.

Me: "My house is like a mini-example of how America is run. Democracy doesn't work. Everything just gets so convoluted."

Back inside we share Danish Pancakes with Strawberries, Apple Butter, and Peanut Butter to the sound of jazz on the stereo.

...

While Ana cleans our dishes in the kitchen I skim through a book that's been sitting on the table for the past week called The Meaning of Communism.

She returns and comments, "So relevant right now."

"Yeah! So relevant," I confirm.

Ana: "This is like your book of the week."

In my room we settle down and watch Before Sunrise (1995). The plan is to watch the sequel another time soon and then go to The Naro to see the third and final installment.

Strawberries and El El's NASCAR Birthday 4SQR Bonanza![i]

Waking up around 1 p.m.

Cinnamon Raisin Bagel with Cream Cheese. Orange Juice.

With Darren, Devon, James, and Laron. We all hop into my wagon and ride up to Pungo to pick strawberries. Talks in the car about Kevin possibly being an idiot savant and how backyard wrestling increases healthcare costs.

Back at the house. Marianne, our French couch surfer, baked homemade Lasagna for everyone. Enjoying a hefty serving.

Then we drive over to Elliott's house on 16th. It's his birthday and all our friends are gathered in his name. Driveway Party! Hula hoop and pogo stick theatrics. Working on a 6-pack of Michelob Ultra. Carpooling over to Motor World to fulfill one of Elliott's dreams, which is to race go-karts with all his friends. I can't even remember the last time I drove a go-kart. Two races are conducted, a qualifying and the championship. Elliott gets first place in both, which is expected because this is his turf; racing is his love. I manage to get second with Cameron in third for the championship. But it's not about who wins. It's about the experience. Despite the expensive price it was well worth it.

It's time for Four Square. We draw out lines with chalk on the boardwalk and engage in a long round of games. Sometimes a few strangers will join in.

Back home. Most everyone dips out. It's just Ana and I. We're both hungry so I cook us a meal: Lentil Wraps with Onions, Peppers, Carrots, Tomatoes, and Kale with Honey Oolong Tea.

Up in my room. Sifting through all the hundreds of photos we took today. Lounging around on the bed – cuddling – massaging – sex.

Breaking TV (June 11 2013)[i]

☼ ○ ▬

Chaperoning a small class of kids between the ages of 5 and 6. I tease them with a bag of Skittles hiding them in a corner. I pretend to pull them out and the whole class belts out ah's and oh's. Eventually I hand them out. The room has expanded and now there's a bunch of people my age gathered around rectangular tables. I'm carrying a bowl of cream of wheat in my right hand and a small cup of milk in my left. As I'm maneuvering down the aisles Skippy stands in front me as a joke and makes it difficult for me to get by.

Me: "Dude! C'mon. I've got shit in my hands."

In the process a credit card that doesn't even belong to me gets bent so bad that it rips in two. I scold Skippy from across the room.

Me: "Dangit, Skippy! This isn't even my card."

He's got a silly grin on his face. I run over and demand we talk in private. We walk behind the door at the top of a staircase. People keep coming in and out

▬ ○ ☼

Waking up at 2:30 p.m.

Downstairs making breakfast. I notice Laron tearing apart a bagel.

Me: "What are you doing over there? Is that how you always eat bagels?"

Laron: "Yeah. I know it's weird."

I run upstairs and yell back, "The Bagel Crumble by Laron!"

Cinnamon Raisin Toast. Orange Juice.

Stopping by the thrift store, visiting with Elliott and picking up some forks, glasses, and a blender. Out back Elliott has to throw away sub-par furniture and items that can't be sold into a big dumpster. He takes a 15-pound weight and slams it into a TV causing the glass screen to explode. I have a go at another one. He uses my phone to record a video of me breaking a TV but unfortunately all we have is this lousy picture because he forgot to actually hit the button.

Egg Sandwich with Tomato and Mayonnaise. Honey Oolong Tea.

With Anthony and Skippy on the Friend's School basketball courts playing H.O.R.S.E. and such. Skippy managed to get his hands on a sweet boom box. We walk back to the house in badass style with the stereo blasting "Straight Outta Compton".

Papaya.

Organizing and cleaning my office space.

Barbecue Garlic Salmon with Peppers, Onions, Kale, Carrots, and Rice.

At China Wok. For some reason my bed is set up in the corner of the restaurant near the front. I'm laying down for a break. Cecily, my boss, plops down next to me and lays her head on my chest in an endearing way. I wrap my arm around her body like it's normal. I feel a tingly warm sensation inside me because I'm excited that she feels this way. She pulls out a condom and insists that we have sex. As much as I'd like to I point out that Ling, her husband and chef, is in the kitchen and could spot us at any moment. "It's not a problem," she says. As much as I love the mutual attraction this sexual tension worries me. We don't end up doing anything. Later, we get kind of busy. The sexual attraction is still there but hidden. Cecily hands me two ice cream waffle cones tied to a string that I'm supposed to wear around my neck and deliver to a customer. I already knew this contraption wouldn't be a feasible way to keep the cones from breaking apart. When I hop into my car the cones crumble and the ice cream melts. I return, afraid that she'll be upset and short tempered about it as she usually is about anything. Where's that sweetness? I know there's a sweetness locked up inside her.

Getting out of bed at 11:07 a.m.

Blueberry Bagel with Cream Cheese. Orange Juice.

All day shift at China Wok.

Thinking into the dream. I know most of those sexual themes are correlated to Ana and having sex with her the night before but part of me wonders how successful I would be if I actually made a pass at my boss. She's only one year older than me. And there's obvious frustration and dullness in her marriage. Even Ling one time asked me about prostitutes and where he could find one in the city. He explained that sometimes a man just needs it. So it makes me question the happiness in their relationship. I mean they work together every day, EVERY DAY. And there's that whole propinquity thing in my favor. The close proximity of her and I at work creates a bed of possibilities. I mean I'm not really considering any kind of legitimate affair. It's all just a fantasy I guess you could say. But if she ever made a pass at me? I don't think I could turn it down.

Strawberry Greek Yogurt.

Ana texts me, "That really surprised me last night. For years I've been so used to shutting my body down sexually during my period, but I will definitely get used to it (like you said I should). Eheh. You're always so good to me. You're always surprising me...in a good way. I can't help it that you naturally impress me. :)"

Bowtie Pesto with Lentils and Tomatoes. Lemon Water.

A tropical storm is brewing. For the rest of the night I'm swimming up to the customer's doors. The rain falls down in bucketfuls. Lightening strikes in the distance.

Dried Apricots.

Finally off work and back home.

Ana China Wok (2)(June 9 2013)[i]

☼ ○ ▬

With James hustling out in front of a busy marketplace. We have signs hung on the walls beside us that say "FREE GAS". It's understood to be a joke but people can't resist free stuff. We pretend to offer them our special made up deals.

▬ ○ ☼

Waking up with hesitation at 11:40 a.m.

Cinnamon Raisin Bagel with Non-Dairy Cream Cheese. Orange Juice.

All day shift at China Wok.

A fairly busy afternoon for deliveries.

Snapping the snow peas.

Tomato Crown with Tuna Salad and a Roll. Salt n Vinegar Chips. Honey Green Tea.

Ana comes by to visit during the last two hours of my shift.

She expresses her uncomfortable feelings towards wearing gloves, wearing glasses, or anything that attaches to her skin because it tickles.

Me: "Ha-ha. You're so funny. I don't wear gloves or glasses because I'm ticklish."

Off work and back home.

Sharing dinner with Ana in the dining room. She slurps up vegetable lo mein while I slurp up Fried Shrimp with Broccoli, Onions, Carrots, and Rice in Garlic Sauce. Washing it down with a Tecate.

Up in my room. While I shower she studies a book she's been reading about managing your life and continues to fill up the pages to her mini composition journal with the Tokyo keyboard sticker on it. Earlier at work Ling asked me if I knew about that Hungarian song "Gloomy Sunday" that came out in 1933 and supposedly sparked a string of suicides. Even the composer killed himself not long after it was released. It's been considered the most depressing song ever. I had never heard it before now. I find a Youtube playlist of various versions of the song. It's quite beautiful and sad. Billie Holiday's version is haunting and soothing.

...

Despite Ana being on her period I encourage a sexual episode. I've been needing it. She's a little embarrassed about it considering the bloodiness. But we get through it with flying ecstatic colors.

Sharing some Cinnamon Raisin Toast. Then off to sleep at 3 a.m., a decent hour considering my sleeping schedule as of late.

Darren comes in for the dinner shift. As usual he's apathetic about life.

Him: "I don't care about anything."

Me: "I know."

Off work and back home.

Vegetable Fried Rice with an Egg.

Anthony and the gang are gathered around the table conjuring up a prank to play on Kevin while he's at work. I'm coerced into it. I play my part and talk to Kevin over the phone convincing him that the cops came and arrested Dustin, our couch surfer, and that Ben got drunk and angry and hid a gun in Kevin's room. Being as gullible as he is he rushes on home. To push the prank further we have Ben run out in the street and take Kevin up to his room to grab the hypothetical gun before the cops supposedly search the house. Everyone hides in his room and surprises him with laughter.

Later I go on a solo bike ride around town – sometimes tagging street signs with stickers.

An Excellent Art Opening at Cure Coffee House[i]

Waking up at 2 p.m.

Cinnamon Raisin Bagel with Non-Dairy Cream Cheese. Orange Juice.

Stretching and general chores around the house.

A couch surfer arrives. His name is Dustin and he's in the process of an extensive road trip via bicycle. I take him with me to drop off the recycle bin and buy some groceries at Trader Joe's. He explains that Youngstown, Ohio, where he's from is "kind of off the map."

"Well, welcome to the map!" I say.

Lentil Sandwich with Tomatoes, Hummus, and Cucumbers. Salt n Vinegar Chips. Honey Green Tea. Peach Greek Yogurt.

Laron shows up with plans to crash here for a few weeks to get away from some of the domestic troubles in his house. Him and Dustin hop in my car and we drive out to Norfolk for James, Richie, and Amy's art show at Cure Coffeehouse.

...

The place is located right near the harbor in a quaint yuppie part of the city – the streets paved in rocky cobblestone. It's a small humble coffee shop. James has on display a collection of portraits he's painted, some on the back of pizza boxes and some on wood panels. Richie's got his wild signature 60's style pieces on the wall. And Amy shows us very detailed gothic cartoonish pictures. Sipping on Coffee and mingling. There's delicious h'orderves to satisfy our stomachs.

I pick up an acoustic guitar and encourage singing. While playing a few duets with Ana I try to encourage her to find the harmony and be confident about it.

James: "Harmonizing is like holding hands. You just go for it."

Not to say Ana doesn't have a confident voice cause she does, and a very well experienced one at that. The excitement between us is motivating. We plan to develop an arsenal of songs to perform together.

Back home we all congregate in the dining room and the kitchen cooking up steaks, spinach, carrots, and cookies. General camaraderie.

...

James hands Ana his phone to pick out music to play: "You're the Youtube deejay."

Me: "DJ Youtube Ana!"

...

I pull up The Powerpuff Girls soundtrack for Laron, James, Ana, and I. Eventually, the Walk to Remember soundtrack comes on and the song "Dancing in the Moonlight" motivates us out of our seats. James provides the moonlight via flashlight app on his smart phone.

Then, Mortal Kombat induces a nostalgic frenetic energy in me. Acrobatics with the chairs, the pogo stick, broom sticks, stools, etc. Laron doesn't hesitate to take part.

...

It's just another night at 1435.

I settle down in my room and get a few texts from Ana after she left, "I really enjoy the spontaneous consistency that takes place everytime I hang out with you. I think you should wear 70's style clothing and rollerskate. Anyways..I really appreciate that you're such an understanding kind of person. Thank you. I know you say that I'm sweet, but I still think you're sweeter. I feel like you do so much for me. Or maybe the word I should use is 'share'. You share your room, your clothes, your music, your topchef talent, your friends, and the list could go on and on and on like OUR list of to do things. I want to be sweet to you. You deserve to be smothered in sweetness! :) :) I wouldn't ever want to be bitter towards you! You seem to have an even temper."

Me: ":) :) :) :) My goal is to enrich your life."

Ana: "Hey! That's MY goal too! Hopefully we can enrich each other's lives!"

☼ ○ ▬

Stuck in this obstacle course with Ana by my side. It's a maze in here. Climb over this. Crawl through that. Open this door. Strafe along that ledge. We get locked into a room that seems to grow in size by the minute. There's nothing really abnormal about it. Slowly I realize this room is connected to a college. The door we need to open appears to be locked. We're safe here at least. I present the idea of having sex since nobody can see us but upon further inspection I see the room opens up into a hallway of students walking to a fro. The scene changes when our prerogative is to hook up with our tour group. The door that was locked is now open. Passing by a meeting room filled with leftover cinnamon pastries, some with crumble toppings. I grab a friend and we snag what we can to bring with us on the bus.

▬ ○ ☼

It's about 2:30 p.m. Ana and I are still cooped up in the bed like hibernating bears. It's time to wake up and embrace what part of the day we haven't wasted sleeping.

Downstairs sharing Bagels with Non-Dairy Cream Cheese and Fruit Spread, along with Orange Juice. Richie's here trying to attach an art piece of his to a frame.

Ana forgot to tell me something that she's super embarrassed about. She does this thing where she introduces a request or idea with a longwinded (but cute) announcement of how embarrassed she is. Well, she locked her keys in the car and the only spare key is at her house in Norfolk. And she has work in less than an hour. She was afraid to ask me for my help. Her reasoning is she knows I'm busy and normally have things to do during the day so she was worried about bothering me with her troubles. Of course I tell her it's no big deal and that I can drive all the way to Norfolk to retrieve the key. But first I try my hand at using the old coat hanger trick to unlock her car door. It proves futile because the design of her locks are made in such a way that a thin object such as a coat hanger could never grip it.

Me: "Well, it was worth a shot. Let's go."

Driving to Norfolk and back.

Turns out she doesn't have to go into work so we continue to hang out. A couch surfer from Kansas shows up named Melodie. She just quit her nursing job and decided to travel around the country. I make us all Lentil Wraps with Tomatoes and Hummus.

While meddling on the guitar Ana and I get inspired to practice a few songs together. She's musically inclined and has a wonderful voice, something I really admire. Practicing The Everly Brothers, "All I Have to Do is Dream" and The White Stripes, "Fell in Love with a Girl".

Later, we hop on bikes and ride over to the Lynnhaven Middle School track field. She seems to have trouble mounting herself on a bike but once she gets on she's fine. It's a beautiful summer night, a perfect temperature and with a constant cool breeze in our faces. We do continuous laps around the track.

...

Taking a break in the bleachers. Chomping on an Apple and sipping on Lemon Water. It's dark with only the glow of the nearby streetlights and building lights from the middle school. Everything about this beginning relationship is problem-free, so far at least. There's a calmness and care-freeness to us.

I notice how I might've been a little bossy when playing those songs together and also when instructing her on how to be comfortable on the bike.

Me: "Sorry if I seem impatient with you sometime."

She insists that I'm not at all and that it's only a positive push, something she likes her friends to do and really needs if she's going to accomplish anything.

Back home. We hug each other goodbye.

Me: "Well I'm glad we got to hang out all day. That was fun."

Ana: "Me too."

Waking up super late again at 2 p.m.

Baked Cinnamon Brown Sugar Grapefruit and Cinnamon Oatmeal with Milk. Orange Juice.

Watching banned cartoons from the 1930's.

Grilled Cheese with Tomato and Hummus. Banana. Honey Green Tea.

Finishing Last Ride (2009).

Learning this Dyin' Crapshooters Blues song, the Two Gallants version.

At the storage unit wailing on the piano and guitar, polishing up some originals.

Back at the house. There's an impromptu party of select friends sipping on cans of Busch in celebration of Josh's birthday.

Black Bean with Cabbage, Onions, Peppers, Zucchini, and Potatoes.

Kofi, James, Ana, and I go to Wanna B's for karaoke good times. Kofi does a Talking Heads song, I hype up the room with Biz Markie's "Just a Friend", and Ana rocks The Cardigan's "Lovefool". Kofi half jokingly continuously complains about the bar's overpriced menu. He had ordered buffalo wings.

Kofi: "That's a dollar a wing!"

...

Afterwards, stopping by the storage unit. Earlier Stephanie was having trouble locating our garage door (she's been sharing the space temporarily). She's here with three guy friends of hers. They were all kayaking today in the hot sun apparent from the severe redness on their skin.

...

Back home. The rest of the crew goes to Rick's Café while Ana and I hang back picking up a bit around the house. We migrate to my room lounging in the bed stuffing our faces with Chocolate Chip Cookies and Popcorn, watching old cartoons from the 30's and 40's starring Betty Boop, Bimbo, Popeye, and Casper. Pointing out the subtle strange/scary aspects of them and how they might've been inappropriate for kids. But to us they're just entertaining and only make us feel happy.

Ana (June 6 2013) (1)†

I start to read aloud to Ana the blog entry from last year when I visited my mom in Florida. As she closes her eyes she insists that she's still listening. But halfway through the reading sleep overcomes her. I'm not offended. I open up Unreal and play a few rounds of deathmatch and capture the flag.

It's terribly late, like past 5 a.m. I stop playing and join her in bed. We resituate ourselves. We clamber and caress each other. It leads into an early morning ecstasy that can't be stopped. Even after thirty minutes she claims to not have any lack of energy whatsoever. At some point we stop and actually fall asleep. But before that happens I pause to analyze her naked body lying next to me.

Ana: "What are you doing?"

Me: "Just looking. Man, you are the stuff poetry's made of."

Last Ride.[i]

Waking up super late in the day at 2 p.m.

Peanut Butter Bagel. Orange Juice.

Errands.

While at Target getting toilet paper for the house I overhear a mother scold her son about being selfish and not listening.

Mother: "Your life is so hard...all the video games you play...watching movies...You're not in real life right now. You're in a fantasy."

Egg Wrap with Tomatoes and Non-Dairy Cream Cheese. Strawberry Greek Yogurt.

Playing a few games of 2-on-2 with strangers at the basketball courts.

Barbecue Garlic Salmon with Zucchini, Onions, Peppers, and Roasted Potatoes.

Watching Last Ride (2009).

Tweaking and consolidating files and programs on my computer.

Playing Unreal Tournament. I used to play this game all the time with Art and the Russians back at 1623. I forgot how addicting this is.

Chocolate Chip Cookies.

Wasting my time on Unreal – shooting and killing – my hand-eye coordination perfecting.

Sleep shortly after 5 a.m.
